Multiple sclerosis (MS) commonly causes eye movement abnormalities that may have a significant impact on patients' disability. Inflammatory demyelinating lesions, especially occurring in the posterior fossa, result in a wide range of disorders, spanning from acquired pendular nystagmus (APN) to internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO), among the most common. As the control of eye movements is well understood in terms of anatomical substrate and underlying physiological network, studying ocular motor abnormalities in MS provides a unique opportunity to gain insights into mechanisms of disease. Rothmund-Thomson syndrome (RTS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that is characterized by skin manifestations, juvenile cataracts, and extracutaneous manifestations. The presence of congenital airway abnormalities has not previously been documented in Rothmund-Thomson syndrome. We report the case of a child with Rothmund-Thomson syndrome suffering from multiple airway abnormalities. Our case highlights the importance of suspecting multiple airway abnormalities in any child with respiratory distress with other systemic anomalies. This necessitates meticulous anatomical and dynamic examina

A case of pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) associated with several hormonal abnormalities in addition to parathyroid hormone (PTH) was reported. Several endocrinological examinations before and after treatment with 1 alpha-OH-D3 revealed abnormal thyroid stimulating hormone and prolactin responses to thyrotropin releasing hormone, abnormal plasma renin activity responses to renin stimulation test, and abnormal calcitonin responses to calcium infusion test. These abnormalities were not corrected when serum calcium levels returned to normal after therapy. From these results, it was suggested that

Three Basenji dogs with renal tubular dysfunction were studied. Hyposthenuria and diminished urine concentrating ability, indicative of nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, were documented. Metabolic acidosis, hyperchloremia, and reduction in glomerular filtration rate also were detected in all dogs. In addition, an exaggerated response to the adrenocorticotropin test and hyperaldosteronism, believed to be secondary to decreased effective circulating blood volume, were detected in all 3 dogs. Thyroxine values were decreased in all dogs and could be correlated with histopathologic changes of the thy

Background/Objectives: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant disorder driven by mutations in the NF1 gene, whose pathogenesis centers on the loss of neurofibromin function and subsequent hyperactivation of the RAS/MAPK pathway. Notably, to the best of our knowledge and following a systematic literature search conducted by our research team, no cases of NF1 complicated by severe cardiac structural abnormalities that ultimately lead to cerebral infarction have been reported to date. Thus, it is of paramount importance to avoid missed diagnosis by performing comprehensive cardia

Auditory manifestations from multiple sclerosis (MS) are not as common as the well-recognized sentinel exacerbations of optic neuritis, partial myelitis, motor weakness, vertiginous episodes, heat intolerance, and eye movement abnormalities. This paper discusses four cases of auditory changes, secondary to MS, and describes the first case, to our knowledge, of palinacousis, the perseveration of hearing, despite cessation of the sound stimulus. For each we characterize the initial complaint, the diagnostic work up, and ultimately, underscore the individualized treatment interventions, that allo

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the clinical significance of TP53 and common cytogenetic abnormalities.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 114 patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (MM) and TP53 abnormalities were selected from two large patient cohorts of collaborating hospitals from 2010 to 2017. The characteristics and outcomes of these patients were analyzed. TP53 and other common mutations in MM patients were quantified by fluorescence in situ hybridization. Kaplan-Meier curves and log-rank tests were applied for survival analysis. A Cox proportional hazard model for cova

Thalamus plays an important role in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis-related fatigue (MSrF). However, the thalamus is a heterogeneous structure and the specific thalamic subregions that are involved in this condition are unclear. Here, we used thalamic shape analysis for the detailed localization of thalamic abnormalities in MSrF. Using the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale, we measured fatigue in 42 patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS). The thalamic shape was extracted from T1w images using an automated pipeline. We investigated the association of thalamic surface devia

BACKGROUND: Fatigue ranks among the most common and disabling symptoms in multiple sclerosis (MS). Recent theoretical works have surmised that this trait might be related to alterations across interoceptive mechanisms. However, this hypothesis has not been empirically evaluated.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether fatigue in MS patients is associated with specific behavioral, structural, and functional disruptions of the interoceptive domain.
METHODS: Fatigue levels were established via the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale. Interoception was evaluated through a robust measure indexed by the heartb

INTRODUCTION: VACTERL association is an acronym that includes vertebral anomalies (V), anal atresia (A), cardiac defects (C), tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) or esophageal atresia (EA), renal anomalies (R), and limb defects (L). Airway anomalies have rarely been reported with VACTERL association.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 10-month-old boy who had been diagnosed with anal atresia and received surgical corrections soon after birth consulted our institution by complaining repeated cough and fever.
DIAGNOSIS: Diagnosis of VACTERL association was finally made. Bronchoscopy and chest CT with computed to

The CHARGE syndrome characterized by coloboma, heart defects, atresia of the choanae, retarded growth, genitourinary hypoplasia, and ear anomalies is one of the rare syndromes. Although certain clinical issues (scapular winging, sloping shoulder, Sprengel's deformity, kyphosis and scoliosis) which could be related to abnormalities in musculoskeletal structures of the neck and shoulder have been identified in CHARGE syndrome, data on details of muscle anomalies seem to be quite limited in the literature. In this case report, bilateral multiple muscular abnormalities (agenesis of the trapezius,

Active motor functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have shown that pediatric multiple sclerosis (MS) patients have a strictly lateralized pattern of activations and a preserved functional connectivity (FC) within the motor system when compared to age-matched healthy controls. However, it is still not clear whether a preserved FC in pediatric MS is present only in the motor system, or involves other relevant functional system. Resting-state (RS) fMRI is a valuable tool for an unbiased investigation of FC abnormalities of multiple networks. This study explored abnormalities of RS

BACKGROUND: We aimed to determine the value of stereoacuity testing in detecting subclinical disease activity in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) without a history or clinical evidence of optic neuritis.
METHODS: We enrolled 23 patients with MS and 23 age-matched and sex-matched healthy control subjects with Snellen acuities of 20/20 in both eyes. We recorded monocular pattern visual evoked potentials (PVEPs) to 60-minute and 15-minute check sizes and tested stereoacuity by the Randot stereoacuity (RSA) test.
RESULTS: The MS group showed delayed PVEP latencies to 60-minute and 15-minute

Because clinical evidence suggests that Proteus syndrome may be caused by a somatic mutation during early development, resulting in mosaicism, the possible types of abnormalities and their clinical distributions are highly variable. Here, we report on an unusual patient with Proteus syndrome. Manifestations included multiple meningiomas, polymicrogyria, and periventricular heterotopias. Both eyes had epibulbar cystic lesions. The retina showed diffuse disorganization with nodular gliosis, retinal pigmentary abnormalities, chronic papilledema, and optic atrophy. Other abnormalities included pro

Immunosuppression of immunoglobulin synthesis seen in patients with multiple myeloma is in part due to immunosuppressive CD5 positive B cells. In a 13 year longitudinal study of an IgA-deficient blood donor who developed multiple myeloma, the presence of immunosuppressive CD5 positive B cells and T cells preceded the diagnosis of overt multiple myeloma and the appearance of immunosuppressive monocytes. These data argue that certain immune defects may be involved in the development of myeloma and are not simply a consequence of overt malignancy.

Despite its importance, very little has been known on metabolic abnormalities in the patients with postoperative multiple organ failure (POMOF). The present study was undertaken to investigate the metabolic abnormalities and to establish effective nutritional management on these patients. Systemic energy metabolism and hepatocellular mitochondrial function were studied with indirect calorimetry and arterial ketone body ratio measurements on 30 POMOF patients treated between 1984 and 1985. The POMOF patients were hypermetabolic and their hepatic mitochondrial function was impaired. Their calori

The Ph1 chromosome is present in 95% of patients with chronic myelogenous leukaemia (CML). The Ph1 chromosome also occurs in 5-25% of children and adults with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). This observation raises questions as to whether these diseases are similar or identical. In patients with CML the c-abl and bcr genes are translocated and abnormally expressed. We studied molecular events related to bcr and c-abl in five patients with ALL to determine its relationship to CML. Four had the Ph1 chromosome; the fifth a probable Ph1 chromosome. c-abl and bcr abnormalities identical to CML
