Feeling proud today may lead people to coast tomorrow: Daily intraindividual associations between emotion and effort in academic goal striving.

Research examining the associations between emotions and goal-directed behaviors has mainly relied on between-subjects designs even though much of the advice based on these findings focus on within-individual changes. The purpose of this study was to better understand intraindividual daily associations between emotions and effort in the context of college students' academic goal striving. In Study 1 (2,531 daily reports from 194 college students at a competitive university), daily positive emotions related to goal pursuit were associated with reduced time spent on the goal the next day (i.e.,

Distance versus face-to-face education of gross anatomy for dental hygiene students: Perceptions and academic achievements of learners.

The provision of distance education has increased rapidly over the past few years owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The core of gross anatomy distance education is three-dimensional (3D) visualization of anatomical structures, and the use of simple 3D visualization tools has increased as distance education has become more popular. The purpose of this study was to establish a more effective operation plan in dental hygiene by investigating learners' opinions about distance education of gross anatomy and 3D visualization tools, and by comparing and analyzing their academic achievements. The study

Rural patient and provider perceptions of telehealth implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Understanding perceptions of telehealth  implementation from patients and providers can improve the utility and sustainability of these programs, particularly in under-resourced rural settings. The purpose of this study was to evaluate both patient and provider perceptions of telehealth visits in a large rural healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic. To promote sustainability of telehealth approaches, we also assessed whether the percentage of missed appointments differed between in-person and telehealth visits. METHODS: Using anonymous surveys, we evaluated patient prefere

Sleep disruption in medicine students and its relationship with impaired academic performance: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Sleep disruption severely impairs learning ability, affecting academic performance in students. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at assessing the prevalence of sleep disruption in medical students and its relationship with academic performance. PubMed, Web of Sciences, EBSCO and SciELO databases searches allowed to retrieve 41 papers with data about the prevalence of sleep deprivation, 20 of which also contained data on its association with academic performance. Poor sleep quality was reported by 5646 out of 14,170 students in 29 studies (39.8%, 95% confidence interval = 39.0-40.

Introduction to the special section on school-related outcomes and success for youth with chronic medical conditions.

Chronic medical conditions permeate our schools with estimates showing that between 15% and 25% of students present with an ongoing illness or disease. Treatments for the most prevalent of these conditions (e.g., diabetes, epilepsy, cancer, juvenile arthritis, and asthma) include hospitalizations, home treatments, and frequent physician appointments-all of which are highly disruptive to children and families. Given the potential medical, cognitive/academic, social-emotional, and behavioral challenges encountered by students with chronic medical conditions, school psychologists are in a unique

When digital engagement becomes dysregulated: associations with aggression, achievement motivation, and academic performance in adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents are embedded in digital environments that are increasingly central to social, academic, and emotional life. Yet the developmental implications of digital engagement remain contested, particularly when exposure metrics such as screen time are used as primary indicators. The present study examined digital engagement as a multidimensional construct while treating regulatory difficulty-the dimension most directly reflecting impaired control and difficulty disengaging-as the focal predictor of aggression, achievement motivation, and objectively measured academic performanc

High math anxiety is associated with lower math achievement across 90 countries: An individual participant data meta-analysis of representative student and adult samples.

Math anxiety and math achievement are reciprocally related, which likely impacts individuals' agency; their educational and career trajectories in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields; and countries' economic growth in these areas. Previous meta-analyses on this relationship have faced limitations from studies by using small convenience samples and have encountered methodological issues, such as variance restriction, low statistical power, and ecological bias. To address these challenges, the present research synthesis is the first to use a comprehensive collection of repre

Sociodemographic reporting and sample composition over 3 decades of psychopathology research: A systematic review and quantitative synthesis.

Although researchers seek to understand psychological phenomena in a population, quantitative research studies are conducted in smaller samples meant to represent the larger population of interest. This systematic review and quantitative synthesis considers reporting of sociodemographic characteristics and sample composition in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology (now the Journal of Psychopathology and Clinical Science) over the past 3 decades. Across k = 1,244 empirical studies, there were high and increasing rates of reporting of participant age/developmental stage and sex/gender, low but inc

For Whom (and When) the Time Bell Tolls: Chronotypes and the Synchrony Effect.

Circadian rhythms are powerful timekeepers that drive physiological and intellectual functioning throughout the day. These rhythms vary across individuals, with morning chronotypes rising and peaking early in the day and evening chronotypes showing a later rise in arousal, with peaks in the afternoon or evening. Chronotype also varies with age from childhood to adolescence to old age. As a result of these differences, the time of day at which people are best at attending, learning, solving analytical problems, making complex decisions, and even behaving ethically varies. Across studies of atte

Reduced growth mindset as a mechanism linking childhood trauma with academic performance and internalizing psychopathology.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high prevalence of childhood adversity and well-documented associations with poor academic achievement and psychopathology, effective, scalable interventions remain largely unavailable. Existing interventions targeting growth mindset-the belief that personal characteristics are malleable-have been shown to improve academic achievement and symptoms of psychopathology in youth. OBJECTIVE: The present study examines growth mindset as a potential modifiable mechanism underlying the associations of two dimensions of childhood adversity-threat and deprivation-with academic a

Academic achievement and needs of school-aged children born with selected congenital anomalies: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Children with congenital anomalies have poorer intellectual and cognitive development compared to their peers, but evidence for academic achievement using objective measures is lacking. We aimed to summarize and synthesize evidence on academic outcomes and special education needs (SEN) of school-aged children born with selected major structural congenital anomalies. Electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, PsycINFO, CINAHL, ProQuest Natural Science and Education Collections), reference lists and citations for 1990-2020 were systematically searched. We included original-research articles

Neurobiological perspective on the development of executive functions.

Executive functions are a set of top-down cognitive processes necessary for emotional self-regulation and goal-directed behaviour supporting, among others, academic abilities. Premature infants are at high risk for subsequent cognitive, psychosocial, or behavioural problems even in the absence of medical complications and in spite of normal brain imaging. Given that this is a sensitive period of brain growth and maturation, these factors may place preterm infants at high risk for executive function dysfunction, disrupted long-term development, and lower academic achievements. Therefore, carefu

Investigating the association between variability in sulcal pattern and academic achievement.

Investigating how the brain may constrain academic achievement is not only relevant to understanding brain structure but also to providing insight into the origins of individual differences in these academic abilities. In this pre-registered study, we investigated whether the variability of sulcal patterns, a qualitative feature of the brain determined in-utero and not affected by brain maturation and learning, accounted for individual differences in reading and mathematics. Participants were 97 typically developing 10-year-olds. We examined (a) the association between the sulcal pattern of th
