The erection of a new genus, Neotegorhynchus n. g. (Palaeacanthocephala, Illiosentidae), with a redescription of Neotegorhynchus cyprini n. comb. from Cyprinus carpio from the Yangtze River basin, China.

The present paper summarizes acanthocephalan parasites of the family Illiosentidae Golvan, 1960, collected from the intestine of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) from Taihu Lake in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, China. A total of 21 acanthocephalan specimens were found in 6 carps (prevalence of 35%). All the studied specimens were assigned to the family Illiosentidae based on the family-specific morphology of the worms and the presence of 8 cement glands in the males. However, the specimens recently found in common carp differed from all 14 extant genera of the family Illiosentidae in the structure o

Host sharing and host manipulation by larval helminths in shore crabs: cooperation or conflict?

Larval helminths of different species that share the same intermediate host and are transmitted by predation to the same definitive host may cooperate in their attempts to manipulate the behaviour of the intermediate host, while at the same time having conflicts of interests over the use of host resources. A few studies have indicated that intermediate hosts harbouring larval helminths have altered concentrations of neurotransmitters in their nervous system, and thus measuring levels of neurotransmitters in host brains could serve to assess the respective and combined effect of different helmi

Inventory of helminth parasites in Caatinga anurans from Northeastern Brazil.

Biological inventories are essential tools for understanding parasite diversity. In this study, we describe the helminth parasite communities associated with anuran amphibians from five localities within the Caatinga domain of Northeastern Brazil. A total of 1,198 individuals, belonging to 22 species and six anuran families (Bufonidae, Hylidae, Leptodactylidae, Microhylidae, Odontoprhynidae, and Phyllomedusidae), were examined. Of these, 629 specimens (52.5%) were parasitized, and 27,004 helminths were recovered. The helminths represented 34 taxa, including 24 Nematoda, 7 Digenea, 1 Cestoda, a

Endoparasites of European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) in Germany and their zoonotic potential: proposed Capillaria ovoreticulata genetically identified as Capillaria putorii.

BACKGROUND: European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) are frequently infected with a variety of endoparasites. The hedgehogs' synanthropic lifestyle results in frequent contact with pets and humans, posing the risk of parasite spillover from a One Health perspective. METHODS: The present study assessed the endoparasite fauna and excretion intensity of 531 European hedgehogs presented at wildlife rehabilitation centres in Germany. Faecal samples were examined by the combined sedimentation-flotation method, the Baermann technique and FASTest® CRYPTO-GIARDIA Strips (MEGACOR Diagnostik GmbH) from

One-sided infections by intestinal parasites in two sympatric porpoises bycaught from the Nemuro Strait of Hokkaido, Japan.

Due to the difficulties and limitations associated with field sampling of marine mammals, quantitative surveys on their parasites are still scarce in Japan. We here report the infection statuses of intestinal parasites in harbor porpoises (n = 34) and Dall's porpoises (n = 10), bycaught between 2014 and 2018 by a bottom set-net fishery in the northern part of the Nemuro Strait, Japan. Necropsies of the harbor porpoises recovered one digenean, Synthesium nipponicum, and two acanthocephalans, Corynosoma sp. and Bolbosoma sp.; no infection was observed in the Dall's porpoises. The dominant parasi

Leiomyoma Causing Disease in a Wild Adriatic Sturgeon (Acipenser naccarii, Bonaparte, 1836).

The Adriatic sturgeon, Acipenser naccarii, is an endemic species to the Adriatic Sea basin classified as critically endangered according to the IUCN Red List. Limited information is available regarding the health status and diseases affecting this species, particularly in the wild. In September 2023, a post-spawning female Adriatic sturgeon was found along the edges of the Adige River. The fish displayed abnormal swimming, cutaneous haemorrhages, extreme emaciation and died shortly after its finding. At necropsy, the stomach appeared enlarged with a firm texture and a severe restriction of the

Identification of antiparasitic drug targets using a multi-omics workflow in the acanthocephalan model.

BACKGROUND: With the expansion of animal production, parasitic helminths are gaining increasing economic importance. However, application of several established deworming agents can harm treated hosts and environment due to their low specificity. Furthermore, the number of parasite strains showing resistance is growing, while hardly any new anthelminthics are being developed. Here, we present a bioinformatics workflow designed to reduce the time and cost in the development of new strategies against parasites. The workflow includes quantitative transcriptomics and proteomics, 3D structure model

A Comprehensive Review of Endoparasite Infections in Marine Fish: Prevalence, Infection Factors, and Dominant Species.

Endoparasite infections with high prevalence rates cause significant economic losses and serious risks to human health including schistosomiasis. The prevalence of these infections in marine fish is influenced by the environmental and anthropogenic elements, dominant parasite species, and their biological adaptations. Recent studies identified Rhadinorhynchus and Anisakis were dominant endoparasite species due to their unique biological characteristics. Numerous reports have documented the prevalence of endoparasites in marine fish. However, a comprehensive review of recent findings, encompass

Occurrence of Corynosoma cystacanths in commercially distributed marine fish within and outside Hokkaido, Japan.

Acanthocephalans of the genus Corynosoma infect pinnipeds as definitive hosts, using amphipods and decapods as intermediate hosts and various marine fishes as paratenic hosts. Human infection is associated with the consumption of raw marine fishes from Hokkaido, Japan. Widespread distribution of Hokkaido-sourced marine fishes to the greater Tokyo metropolitan area raises concerns about exposure outside Hokkaido. However, data on the prevalence of Corynosoma cystacanths in marine fish marketed in this region remain limited. A total of 473 individuals (24 species) from Hokkaido and 52 individual

The invasive acanthocephalan parasite Pachysentis canicola is associated with a declining endemic island fox population on San Miguel Island.

In the late 1990s, the San Miguel Island fox (Urocyon littoralis littoralis) faced near-extinction. Fourteen of the 15 remaining foxes were placed into an island-based captive breeding program used to repopulate the island. Although the fox population in San Miguel reached pre-decline numbers by 2010, a second decline started around 2014, coincidental with a newly observed acanthocephalan parasite. To identify this introduced acanthocephalan species and determine the pathologic consequences of its infection on the health of foxes, we used an extensive record of island fox necropsies and associ

In vitro culture and morphology of Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae (Eoacanthocephala: Neoechinorhynchidae) collected from the intestine of tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) farmed in the Brazilian Amazon.

The tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) is a species of great economic importance for fish farming in the Brazilian Amazon, and acanthocephaliasis caused by Neoechinorhynchus buttnerae (Golvan 1956) represents an obstacle to its production due to it causing severe morphological damage to the intestinal mucosa, thus impairing the absorption of nutrients and causing weight loss in the fish. Therefore, the establishment of in vitro protocols for evaluation of anthelmintic drugs is the first step to development of effective measures for in vivo control of this endoparasite. The present study evaluated
