First molecular evidence of Wolbachia occurrence in Amblyomma sculptum (Acari: Ixodidae).

As the main vector for the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii in Brazil, the tick Amblyomma sculptum is a parasite of great public health importance in this country. Wolbachia is an endosymbiont bacterium highly widespread among invertebrates and because of its impact on its hosts' biology, form a powerful alternative for pests and disease control. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of this bacterium in A. sculptum. For this, 187 adult ticks collected in two municipalities in the interior of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, were analyzed using molecular techniques and bioinfor

Micropathogen community identification in ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) using third-generation sequencing.

Ticks are important vectors that facilitate the transmission of a broad range of micropathogens to vertebrates, including humans. Because of their role in disease transmission, it has become increasingly important to identify and characterize the micropathogen profiles of tick populations. The objective of the present study was to survey the micropathogens of ticks by third-generation metagenomic sequencing using the PacBio Sequel platform. Approximately 46.481 Gbp of raw micropathogen sequence data were obtained from samples from four different regions of Heilongjiang Province, China. The cle

Tick-borne encephalitis virus in Ixodes ricinus (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks, Tunisia.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is the etiologic agent of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and transmitted by Ixodes ricinus (Linnaeus, 1758) in Europe. The geographical distribution of I. ricinus in the Palearctic region covers also northern Africa, including northwestern Tunisia. While the eco-epidemiology of TBE in Europe is well documented, no data concerning TBEV from northern Africa are available. We investigated whether TBEV is circulating in Tunisia. A total of 877 adult I. ricinus collected from northwestern Tunisia were examined in pools for the presence of TBEV by nRT-PCR. Viral R

Ticks (Acari: Ixodida) parasitizing humans in Corum and Yozgat provinces, Turkey.

In order to identify ticks infesting humans in Corum and Yozgat provinces in Turkey, a total of 2110 ticks representing 14 species were collected on humans, between June and September 2009. Of those, 1551 (687♂, 450♀, 407 nymphs, 7 larvae) were collected from Corum and 559 (330♂, 180♀, 49 nymphs) were collected from Yozgat. The majority of ticks (n = 1121, 53.1 %) was Hyalomma marginatum. Other common ticks infesting humans were Dermacentor marginatus (n = 209, 9.9 %) and Rhipicephalus turanicus sensu lato (n = 145, 6.9 %) in the study area. In addition, a total of 386 immature Hyalomma were f

A new species of Ixodes (Acari: Ixodidae) from South African mammals.

A new tick species belonging to the African subgenus Afrixodes Morel, 1966, namely, Ixodes ( Afrixodes ) fynbosensis n. sp., is described. The female of I. fynbosensis is easily differentiated from the other African Ixodes species by a large, tapering triangular ventrolateral spur on palpal segment I. Nymph and larva of I. fynbosensis can be distinguished from those of other members of Afrixodes by a combination of the following characters: pointed hypostome, long auriculae, long and acute ventrolateral projections of basis capituli of nymph, only 2 pairs of central dorsal setae, and a straigh

Mechanical transmission of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus by hematophagous mites (Acari).

Studies were undertaken to determine whether two species of hematophagous mites could transmit Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) virus to suckling mice. The chicken mite, Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer), mechanically transmitted this virus to previously uninfected mice up to 16 h after taking a blood meal from a viremic animal. In contrast, Laelaps kochi Oudemans failed to transmit virus to mice in any feeding trials. Virus did not replicate in either species of mite but was detected in 20% of D. gallinae and in 12% of L. kochi specimens tested 48 h after a viremic blood meal. In mites

Experimental infection of Ornithodoros spp. ticks (Acari: Argasidae) with Yersinia pestis.

Ticks of the genus Ornithodors feed on many rodent species with known roles in maintaining and amplifying plague (Yersinia pestis) in nature. Five species of ticks in this genus are shown to acquire the plague bacillus by feeding on infected hosts. Most notably, 80% of O. hermsi Wheeler, Herms and Meyer harbored Y. pestis 1 mo after an infectious blood meal. Subsequent transmission by infected ticks was not demonstrated. However, 1 yr after the infectious feeding, Y. pestis DNA was detected using a hybridization probe on tick triturates that were amplified by in vitro cultivation. Y. pestis ca

Differential distribution of immature Ixodes dammini (Acari: Ixodidae) on rodent hosts.

Ectoparasites such as ixodid ticks that remain attached to hosts for several days while feeding on blood are able to overcome the inflammatory and immune responses of some hosts and not others. The immature stages of the deer tick Ixodes dammini are found more frequently on the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus, than on other rodents. We propose that P. leucopus is more tolerant to I. dammini than is a less common host, the meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus. To test this hypothesis, the distribution patterns and engorgement indices were determined for larval and nymphal I. dammini col

Synganglial and neurosecretory morphology of female Ornithodoros parkeri (cooley) (acari: Argasidae).

Single esophageal and paired cheliceral, palpal, pedal (I-IV), and opisthosomal nerves enter the synganglion and form specific neuropilar ganglia. The ganglia are integrated by a complex series of commissures and connectives. Eighteen paraldehyde-fuchsin-positive neurosecretory regions, which vary greatly in size and amount of granular neurosecretory material, are each associated (one or more) with neuropilar ganglia. Presumably transport of neurosecretory materials to target tissues occurs through axonal pathways, perineurial-neural lamella associations, and the neurohemal retrocerebral organ

Osmotin1 is involved in rice resistance to Schizotetranychus oryzae (Acari: Tetranychidae) infestation.

BACKGROUND: Rice is one of the most consumed cereals in the world. Productivity losses are caused by different biotic stresses. One of the most common is the phytophagous mite Schizotetranychus oryzae Rossi de Simons (Acari: Tetranychidae), which inhibits plant development and seed production. The identification of plant defense proteins is important for a better understanding of the mite-plant interaction. We previously detected a high expression of Osmotin1 protein in mite-resistant rice cultivars, under infested conditions, suggesting it could be involved in plant defense against mite attac

An established population of Asian longhorned ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) in Ohio, USA.

We describe the first known established Asian longhorned tick (ALT) (Acari: Ixodidae: Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann) population in Ohio, USA. In mid-summer 2021, we collected ALTs from an infested pasture in response to an alert that grazing cattle had been infested with ticks, and 3 of them had died. No ALTs were reported following pesticide treatment of the pasture in fall 2021. In the laboratory, we identified 9,287 ticks to species, representing all 3 life stages, as ALTs and tested 100 of the adult females for infectious agents relevant to human and animal health, including Theileria

Diversity, ecology, and seasonality of hard ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) in eastern Croatia.

The diversity of hard tick fauna was studied in different forest communities in 48 localities of eastern Croatia using the dragging-flagging method and by hand from ten different vertebrate hosts. A total of 2,225 specimens comprising seven species in three genera were identified. Ixodes ricinus, the most abundant species (72.8% of all collected specimens) was recorded in 44 localities, followed by Dermacentor reticulatus in 19 localities, while the other five species (D. marginatus, H. concinna, H. inermis, I. canisuga, and I. hexagonus) were recorded in fewer localities. The highest ratio (6

Detection of Rickettsia spp. in ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) of domestic animals in Colombia.

Rickettsiosis are emerging or re-emerging diseases, with a worldwide distribution associated to transmission by arthropod vectors. Rickettsia species belong to the spotted fever group (SFG) and are transmitted by hard ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) that may act as vectors and reservoirs. This study carried out a molecular detection of Rickettsia from 7 species of the family Ixodidae collected from domestic hosts by PCR amplification of fragments of the citrate synthase "gltA" gene and outer membrane protein "ompA" gene. Of the 204 samples analyzed, 11.3% (23) were positive for rickettsial infection.

The Evolving Medical and Veterinary Importance of the Gulf Coast tick (Acari: Ixodidae).

Amblyomma maculatum Koch (the Gulf Coast tick) is a three-host, ixodid tick that is distributed throughout much of the southeastern and south-central United States, as well as several countries throughout Central and South America. A considerable amount of scientific literature followed the original description of A. maculatum in 1844; nonetheless, the Gulf Coast tick was not recognized as a vector of any known pathogen of animals or humans for >150 years. It is now identified as the principal vector of Hepatozoon americanum, the agent responsible for American canine hepatozoonosis, and Ricket
