Primary prevention of road traffic accident-related traumatic brain injuries in younger populations: a systematic review of helmet legislation.

OBJECTIVE: Road traffic accidents are the most frequent cause of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), particularly among young populations worldwide. Helmets are proven to prevent injuries; however, estimates of helmet compliance are low globally. Surgical/critical care management of TBI is often used to treat these injuries, but primary prevention should be recommended. A key component in promoting TBI prevention among pediatric and young populations is through helmet legislation. The authors investigated helmet policies for motorcycles and bicycles globally to provide recommendations for how

[Early management of scrape and denuding injuries of the face after bicycle accidents. Prevention of scar ectropion].

Bicycle accidents may cause typical skin defects in the maxillary area if the unprotected face of the bicyclist hits the ground. Cicatricial ectropion is a frequent result. We report on 22 patients with facial skin defects after bicycle accidents and demonstrate a new concept for early treatment of facial skin abrasions and skin defects. Transtarsal traction sutures, temporary closure of skin defects by synthetic skin, and delayed free-skin grafting can prevent cicatricial ectropion even in large skin defects extending beyond the orbital margin. The overall time for treatment is significantly

Descriptive analysis of the effect of back protector on the prevention of vertebral and thoracolumbar injuries in serious motorcycle accident.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Among the different products and protective gear used by riders of two-wheeled motorized vehicles, back protectors that are designed to prevent damage to the spinal column are widely used today compared other protections. However, few studies measure their effectiveness. Can their effectiveness be measured? How do they help decrease or change the nature of thoracolumbar traumas that occur? To address these questions and remedy the lack of objective data regarding these products, an epidemiological, clinical, and biomechanical analysis of motorcycle riders who were admitt

Diagnosis and treatment of minimal hepatic encephalopathy to prevent motor vehicle accidents: a cost-effectiveness analysis.

UNLABELLED: Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) in cirrhosis is associated with impaired driving skills and increased risk of motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). Detection and treatment of MHE has the potential to reduce costs and morbidity associated with MVAs. We conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis to assess the benefits of different strategies of MHE diagnosis and treatment for reducing MVA-related societal costs. The analyses compared five MHE management strategies: (1) presumptive treatment of all cirrhosis patients; (2) diagnosis by neuropsychological exam (NPE) with treatment; (3) diag

Exploring trends in pediatric craniofacial furniture accidents: Implications for prevention, safety counseling, and future advocacy initiatives.

BACKGROUND: Furniture and television-associated injuries are prevalent in homes and schools, especially among young children. Collisions, tip-overs, and falls off these structures are common mechanisms of injury that often involve the head and face, resulting in emergency room visits. This study aims to estimate the number of craniofacial injuries resulting from furniture accidents in the pediatric population and offer guidance to parents and/or guardians on child safety and prevention strategies to mitigate these risks. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) asse

Are full-face helmets the most effective in preventing head and neck injury in motorcycle accidents? A meta-analysis.

Motorcycles are the most common type of vehicle involved in traffic deaths in developing countries. Although helmets can provide protection against injury, there is limited evidence available regarding which type of helmet best protects against head and neck injuries in this setting. This review was conducted based on articles in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. We compared full-face helmets with other types of helmet with regard to head and neck injury prevention in road accidents involving motorcyclists. Of 702 studies, six were eligible with a total of 6,529 participants. W

[The significance of the results of crash-tests with the use of the models of the pedestrians' lower extremities for the prevention of the traffic road accidents].

The disabling injuries inflicted during road traffic accidents (RTA) create a serious challenge for the public health services and are at the same time a major socio-economic problem in the majority of the countries throughout the world. The injuries to the lower extremities of the pedestrians make up the largest fraction of the total number of the non-lethal RTA injuries. Most of them are responsible for the considerable deterioration of the quality of life for the participants in the accidents during the subsequent period. The objective of the present study was to summarize the currently ava

[Epidemiology of scooter accidents in Italy: the effectiveness of mandatory use of helmets in preventing incidence and severity of head trauma].

The article refers to two surveillance studies, conducted the first in the city of Rome and Naples, in 1999, and the second only in Rome before and after the implementation of the new law on mandatory use of helmet (1999-2000). Personal data, accident circumstances, helmet use, others involved in accident and health data were collected. In the first study we found that only 12% of injured people wear a helmet. Head trauma seems to be influenced by helmet use, with a nearly sixfold increase among non-users (RR = 5.73), while injuries to thorax, abdomen and extremity occurred with identical freq

Myocardial bridge pathology and preventable accidents during physical activity of healthy subjects: A case report and a literature review.

Myocardial bridging is a congenital coronary pathology described as a segment of coronary artery which courses through the myocardial wall under the muscle bridge. Although the prognosis of myocardial bridging is benign, sports medicine recognises myocardial bridging as a leading cause of sudden death among young basketball, football and soccer players. The authors report a case of a 42-year-old man who collapsed while playing football. He died notwithstanding prompt medical assistance and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. At autopsy, gross examination of the heart revealed the intramural course
