Discrimination and mental health among Somali refugee adolescents: the role of acculturation and gender.

This study examines the role of social identity (acculturation and gender) in moderating the association between discrimination and Somali adolescent refugees' mental health. Participants were English-speaking Somali adolescent refugees between the ages of 11 and 20 (N = 135). Perceived discrimination, trauma history, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depressive symptoms, and behavioral acculturation were assessed in structured interviews. Fourteen in-depth qualitative interviews and 3 focus groups were also conducted. Results indicated that discrimination was common and associated with wo

Acculturation and breast-feeding intention and practice in Hispanic women on the US-Mexico border.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the extent to which acculturation indicators predict both breast-feeding history and intentions among Mexican-American mothers having their first births, and among those having subsequent births. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey in a hospital post-partum unit. METHODS: 3,036 Hispanic women were interviewed post-partum in their hospital room. A survey was administered in English or Spanish, and included questions about prenatal care, diet, work exposures, contraceptive use, and breast-feeding history and intentions. For the purposes of this study, acculturation was measur

Beyond Acculturation: Ethnic Identity, Tobacco and Nicotine Product Use, and Health Among Arab Americans.

BACKGROUND: Arab Americans are one of the fastest-growing immigrant populations in the United States, yet they remain largely invisible in tobacco surveillance and prevention efforts due to their classification as "White" in national data. Despite evidence of elevated tobacco use and chronic disease burden, limited research has examined how cultural, psychological, and social factors shape tobacco-related health risks in this community. OBJECTIVES: This study examined associations between ethnic identity, tobacco use, and health outcomes (self-rated health, chronic disease diagnosis) among Ar

Cultural immersion, acculturation strategies, and depressive symptoms among first-generation Vietnamese migrants in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide migration represents a major challenge of the 21st century. Despite the strong association between acculturation and mental health, research findings on underlining mechanisms remain inconsistent. Prior research urges to investigate sample characteristics in a more structured manner. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to systematically investigate factors impacting acculturation and depressive symptoms in a large, not exclusively clinical, sample of Vietnamese migrants in Germany. METHOD: This study investigated, with multiple regressions, factors (age at arrival, gend

Air pollution, neighborhood acculturation factors, and neural tube defects among Hispanic women in California.

BACKGROUND: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are one of the most common types of birth defects. Environmental pollutants and acculturation have been associated with NTDs independently. The potential effect modification of acculturation in the relationship between ambient air pollution and risks of NTDs is not well understood. METHODS: We investigated whether associations between traffic-related air pollutant exposure in early gestation and NTDs, and more specifically spina bifida, were modified by individual and neighborhood acculturation factors among 139 cases and 466 controls born in the San Joa

Comparing acculturation scales and their relationship to cancer screening among older Mexican-American women.

BACKGROUND: Hispanic women in the United States are less likely to participate in breast and cervical cancer screening than women of other racial and ethnic groups. To plan appropriate interventions requires an understanding of the barriers to participation, including those of acculturation and assimilation. Few studies have examined the effects of acculturation and assimilation on the cancer-screening behavior of Mexican-American women. PURPOSE: Because of the extensive use of the Cuellar acculturation scale and the more recent use of the Hazuda scale, we explore the utility of these two mea

Impact of Acculturation Associated With Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease Among Mexican Americans.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Latin America holds the highest global prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), affecting up to 44.4% of the population. With the growing Hispanic population in the U.S., understanding MASLD in this group is increasingly relevant. Acculturation, the adoption of host-country norms, may influence health behavior. This study examines associations between acculturation, MASLD, and fibrosis among Hispanic American adults using a U.S. national survey. METHODS: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2020 prepandemic data

Intimate Partner Violence, immigration, acculturation, and depression among Chinese immigrant women: A secondary analysis.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a widespread public health concern with serious mental health consequences. However, limited research has examined the relationship between IPV and mental health among Chinese immigrant women in the U.S. particularly in relation to broader sociocultural and immigration-related contexts. This study examined how various forms of IPV and immigration- and acculturation-related factors were associated with depression risk among 974 Chinese immigrant women in the U.S. using secondary data analysis. Measures included sociodemographic characteristics, physical, sexua

Dimensions of acculturation: associations with health risk behaviors among college students from immigrant families.

In the present study, we examined a bidimensional model of acculturation (which includes both heritage and U.S. practices, values, and identifications) in relation to hazardous alcohol use, illicit drug use, unsafe sexual behavior, and impaired driving. A sample of 3,251 first- and second-generation immigrant students from 30 U.S. colleges and universities completed measures of behavioral acculturation; cultural values (individualism, collectivism, and self-construal); ethnic and U.S. identity; and patterns of alcohol and drug use, engagement in potentially unsafe sexual activities, and drivin

The social determinants of depression in elderly Korean immigrants in Canada: does acculturation matter?

Depression in old age significantly decreases the quality of life and may lead to serious consequences, such as suicide. Existing literature indicates that elderly Korean immigrants may experience higher levels of depression than other racial ethnic group elders. The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate factors that influence depression among older Korean immigrants in Toronto. A total of 148 participants, ages 60 years or older (mean age = 74.01, SD = 8.24), completed face-to-face interviews in Korean language. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted by adding variable

Nativity, acculturation, and economic status: explanations of Asian American living arrangements in later life.

Using 1980 Census data, we examined the household and nonhousehold living arrangements for older, unmarried women of Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, and Korean descent, finding substantial variation across ethnic groups. We tested three hypotheses regarding the effects of acculturation, economic status, and nativity/immigration status. The results from our multivariate analyses show that Chinese-origin and Filipino-origin women who are less acculturated are more likely to live with others than those who are more acculturated. Members from each Asian American group who can afford independent livin

Interventions Addressing Acculturative Stress in Latinx Immigrants Residing in the US: An Evidence Map.

As Latinx immigrants spend more time in the US, their health erodes due to acculturative stress, contributing to health inequities. Recent interventions aim to buffer these effects and enhance resilience, preserving their relative health advantage. To understand these efforts, we created an evidence map detailing the scope and distribution of interventions addressing acculturative stress in Latinx immigrants, highlighting gaps in the literature and proposing a research agenda. We systematically reviewed the literature from 2000 through 2024. We screened empirical studies using pre-determined e

A systematic review of acculturation and sleep health among adult immigrants in the United States.

The United States (US) has more immigrants than any other country in the world, with an estimated 44 million non-US-born individuals residing in the country as of 2018. Previous studies have linked US acculturation to both positive and negative health outcomes, including sleep. However, the relationship between US acculturation and sleep health is not well understood. This systematic review aims to identify and synthesize scientific studies on acculturation and sleep health among adult immigrants in the US. A systematic search of the literature was performed in PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, and Web of

The influence of immigrant status and acculturation on the development of overweight in Latino families: a qualitative study.

Exposure to obesogenic environments in the U.S. may foster development of overweight in immigrants with greater acculturation. Few studies document mechanisms of the acculturation process from immigrants' own perspectives or describe implications on the children of immigrants. Focus groups and in-depth interviews were conducted with immigrant Latina mothers (N = 51) examining mothers' beliefs, attitudes and practices related to early child feeding and weight. Focus group participants completing the Marin Acculturation Scale more closely identified with Latino culture, although the mean score (

Acculturation is associated with the prevalence of tardive dyskinesia and akathisia in community-treated patients with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Ethnicity is a risk factor for tardive dyskinesia (TD) and other antipsychotic drug-induced movement disorders (ADIMD). It is unclear whether this association is mediated through genetic, environmental or cultural factors individually or in combination. This pilot study aimed to explore this interaction by determining if acculturation in migrant groups contributed to the prevalence of ADIMD. METHOD: Culturally diverse but relatively genetically homogeneous (white Caucasian) patients with schizophrenia (n = 40) treated at a single site were assessed for the presence of ADIMD and lev

The association between maternal acculturation, acculturative stress and factors related to child feeding in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos Family Lifestyle Outcomes Research (HCHS/SOL FLOR) Study.

The acculturation process and its related stress have been associated with health declines among Hispanic/Latino immigrants in the US. However, the impact on caregiver feeding style and the home food environment are unknown. This study aimed to assess the associations between maternal acculturation and acculturation stress with both caregiver feeding style (n=248) and the home food environment (n=178) using data from mother-child dyads from the Family Lifestyle Outcomes Research ancillary study of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos. Hispanic sexual minority individuals, linguistic acculturation, and behavioral health: Evidence of a healthy migrant effect.

PURPOSE: Stress-based theories suggest that sexual minority Hispanic migrants are at increased risk of adverse behavioral health outcomes. However, a body of descriptive evidence shows migrants exhibit improved health outcomes. Responding to calls for intersectional investigations of the 'healthy migrant effect,' we quantitatively examine whether sexual minority status moderates the relationship between English proficiency (a proxy for acculturation) and behavioral health. METHODS: We used pooled cross-sectional data from the Hispanic respondents to the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use a
