Ipsilateral acoustic reflex stimulation in normal and sensorineural impaired ears: a preliminary report.

Ipsilateral acoustic reflex thresholds were measured at 1,000 Hz and 2,000 Hz in 38 subjects with normal hearing and in 107 subjects with a symmetrical sensorineural hearing loss. Acoustic reflex thresholds were approximately six dB better for ipsilateral vs. contralateral stimuli for both subject groups. High ipsilateral reflex thresholds were associated with larger static compliance values in the sensorineural hearing impaired subjects. Reversed reflexes (increasing compliance with muscle contraction) were observed for ipsilateral stimulation in five per cent (two) of the normal hearing subj

Transcranial electric and acoustic stimulation for tinnitus: study protocol for a randomized double-blind controlled trial assessing the influence of combined transcranial random noise and acoustic stimulation on tinnitus loudness and distress.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is the result of aberrant neuronal activity. As a novel treatment form, neuromodulation is used to modify neuronal activity of brain areas involved in tinnitus generation. Among the different forms of electric stimulation, transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) has been shown to be a promising treatment option for tinnitus. In addition, recent studies indicate that the reduction in tinnitus can be more pronounced when different modalities of stimulation techniques are combined ("bimodal stimulation"). TRNS can be used in combination with acoustic stimulation (AS), a

Acoustic-electric trigeminal-nerve stimulation enhances functional connectivity in patients with disorders of consciousness.

AIM: Disruption of functional brain connectivity is thought to underlie disorders of consciousness (DOC) and recovery of impaired connectivity is suggested as an indicator of consciousness restoration. We recently found that rhythmic acoustic-electric trigeminal-nerve stimulation (i.e., musical stimulation synchronized to electrical stimulation of the trigeminal nerve) in the gamma band can improve consciousness in patients with DOC. Here, we investigated whether these beneficial stimulation effects are mediated by alterations in functional connectivity. METHODS: Sixty-three patients with DOC

Correlation Analysis of EEG Brain Network With Modulated Acoustic Stimulation for Chronic Tinnitus Patients.

The acoustic stimulation influences of the brain is still unveiled, especially from the brain network point, which can reveal how interaction is propagated and integrated between different brain zones for chronic tinnitus patients. We specifically designed a paradigm to record the electroencephalograms (EEGs) for tinnitus patients when they were treated with consecutive acoustic stimulation neuromodulation therapy for up to 75 days, using the tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) to evaluate the tinnitus severity or the acoustic stimulation treatment efficacy, and the EEG to record the brain activ

Epilepsy Seizures in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats After Acoustic Stimulation: Role of Renin-Angiotensin System.

Hypertension is a common comorbidity observed in individuals with epilepsy. Growing evidence suggests that lower blood pressure is associated with reduced frequency and severity of seizures. In this study, we sought to investigate whether the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), which is a critical regulator of blood pressure, is involved in the pathogenesis of audiogenic epilepsy-related seizures in a hypertensive rat model. Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) were given RAS inhibitors, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor or angiotensin II type I receptor (AT1R) antagonist, for 7 days

Development and Application of Cochlear Implant-Based Electric-Acoustic Stimulation of Spiral Ganglion Neurons.

Cochlear implants are currently the most effective treatment for profound sensorineural hearing loss. However, their therapeutic effect is limited by the survival and proper physiological function of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs), which are targeted by the cochlear implant. It is therefore critical to explore the mechanism behind the effect of electric-acoustic stimulation (EAS) on the targeted SGNs. In this work, a biocompatible cochlear implant/graphene EAS system was created by combining a cochlear implant to provide the electrically transformed sound stimulation with graphene as the condu

Electric-acoustic stimulation suppresses tinnitus in a subject with high-frequency single-sided deafness.

BACKGROUND: A suggested solution to suppress tinnitus is to restore the normal sensory input. This is based on the auditory deprivation hypothesis. It is known that hearing aids can provide sufficient activation of the auditory nervous system and reduce tinnitus in subjects with mild to moderate hearing loss and that cochlear implantation can reduce tinnitus in subjects with severe to profound hearing loss. This applies to subjects with single-sided deafness (SSD) or bilateral hearing loss. AIM: To investigate if electric-acoustic stimulation (EAS) can reduce severe tinnitus in a subject with

Suppression and facilitation of auditory neurons through coordinated acoustic and midbrain stimulation: investigating a deep brain stimulator for tinnitus.

OBJECTIVE: The inferior colliculus (IC) is the primary processing center of auditory information in the midbrain and is one site of tinnitus-related activity. One potential option for suppressing the tinnitus percept is through deep brain stimulation via the auditory midbrain implant (AMI), which is designed for hearing restoration and is already being implanted in deaf patients who also have tinnitus. However, to assess the feasibility of AMI stimulation for tinnitus treatment we first need to characterize the functional connectivity within the IC. Previous studies have suggested modulatory p

Stimulating the Stimulated Cortex-Frontocortical Anodal Electric Stimulation Combined With Closed-Loop Acoustic Stimulation During Sleep Impairs Memory in Subjects With High Cognitive Ability.

This study investigates the impact of simultaneous anodal transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) and closed-loop acoustic stimulation (CLAS) during slow-wave sleep on memory consolidation and neural oscillations. In this experiment, anodal tDCS was used to modulate cortical excitability, aiming to alter the brain state and investigate the resultant impact of CLAS-induced effects on sleep electroencephalography and overnight memory consolidation. Twenty participants (aged 18-30) completed two experimental nights involving either CLAS alone or tDCS combined with CLAS (AmodCLAS). Offline

Feasibility in Recording Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials from the Gastrocnemius Muscles Using Acoustic Stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Vestibulo-spinal reflexes (VSR) contribute to postural control from the neck to the lower extremities. The cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP), recorded from neck muscles, assesses the upper VSR and is used in research and clinical settings. However, no clinical tools evaluate the full length of the VSR. Although lower-limb VEMP recordings show potential, previous studies have yielded inconsistent results. PURPOSE: This study examines the feasibility of recording a VEMP from the gastrocnemius muscle using acoustic stimulation. RESEARCH DESIGN: Feasibility study

Piezoelectric Nanofibrous Scaffolds for Promoting the Growth of Spiral Ganglion Neurons via Acoustic Stimulation.

The loss of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) and hair cells often leads to sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), whose therapeutic effect depends on the quality and functional integrity of the residual SGNs. Compared with traditional pharmacological therapies, tissue engineering methods have been developed to provide a biomimetic environment for SGN regeneration, but static strategies and non-responsive scaffolds still limit the therapy efficiency. Here, we present a composite piezoelectric nanofibrous scaffold responsive to acoustic stimulation to promote the growth of SGNs. The oriented nanofibro

[Effects of transcranial magneto-acoustic electrical stimulation on calcium signals in prefrontal nerve clusters].

Transcranial magneto-acoustic electrical stimulation (TMAES) is a novel method of brain nerve regulation and research, which uses induction current generated by the coupling of ultrasound and magnetic field to regulate neural electrical activity in different brain regions. As the second special envoy of nerve signal, calcium plays a key role in nerve signal transmission. In order to investigate the effect of TMAES on prefrontal cortex electrical activity, 15 mice were divided into control group, ultrasound stimulation (TUS) group and TMAES group. The TMAES group received 2.6 W/cm 2 and 0.3 T o

Treatment Tone Spacing and Acute Effects of Acoustic Coordinated Reset Stimulation in Tinnitus Patients.

Acoustic coordinated reset (aCR) therapy for tinnitus aims to desynchronize neuronal populations in the auditory cortex that exhibit pathologically increased coincident firing. The original therapeutic paradigm involves fixed spacing of four low-intensity tones centered around the frequency of a tone matching the tinnitus pitch, f T , but it is unknown whether these tones are optimally spaced for induction of desynchronization. Computational and animal studies suggest that stimulus amplitude, and relatedly, spatial stimulation profiles, of coordinated reset pulses can have a major impact on th

Means of enhancing bone fracture healing: optimal cell source, isolation methods and acoustic stimulation.

BACKGROUND: The human body has an extensive capacity to regenerate bone tissue after trauma. However large defects such as long bone fractures of the lower limbs cannot be restored without intervention and often lead to nonunion. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to assess the pool and biological functions of human mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSCs) isolated from different bone marrow locations of the lower limbs and to identify novel strategies to prime the cells prior to their use in bone fracture healing. Following, bone marrow from the ilium, proximal femur, distal femur and proxi

Promontory stimulation following translabyrinthine excision of acoustic neuroma with preservation of the cochlear nerve.

Promontory stimulation is an accurate method of assessing the functional integrity of the cochlear nerve by electrical stimulation. This technique is widely used in screening prospective candidates for cochlear implants. Recent reports have confirmed the integrity of cochlear nerve responses to electrical stimulation following labyrinthectomy and unsuccessful hearing preservation attempt by the retrosigmoid approach. In this report, the authors present three patients with intracanalicular acoustic neuromas excised through a translabyrinthine approach in which the cochlear nerve was preserved.
