Marriage and the psychological consequences of a heart attack: a longitudinal study of adaptation to chronic illness after 3 years.

As part of a larger study on recovery from myocardial infarction in a national sample of male cardiac patients, data was collected on slightly under 400 men and their wives over a 5-year period. This longitudinal data set was used to investigate the role of patient health cognitions and marital factors on long-term psychological response to the illness. Negative appraisals of threat and loss due to cardiac impairment/disability were found to be the best predictor of anxiety and depression at 3-4 years after hospitalisation. Patient cognitions appeared to be a chief mediator of medically-define

Research on a machine learning-based adaptive and efficient screening model for psychological symptoms of community correctional prisoners.

Community correction institutions in China frequently employ the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) and the health survey brief (SF-12) as primary tools for psychological assessment of community correctional prisoners. However, in practical application, the SCL-90 Checklist faces issues such as complex item numbers, overall low cultural level of the subjects, and insufficient professional level of the administrators. The SF-12 health survey brief, as a preliminary screening tool, although only has 12 questions, to some extent simplifies the evaluation process and improves work efficiency, it is pro

The longitudinal relation between patterns of goal management and psychological health in people with arthritis: The need for adaptive flexibility.

OBJECTIVES: Due to their disease, patients with polyarthritis face the task of reconciling their threatened personal goals with their capabilities. Previous cross-sectional research on patients with chronic disease related higher levels of goal management strategies to lower levels of distress and higher levels of well-being. This study was the first to focus longitudinally on goal management patterns that combined strategies originating from different goal management theories. Our first study objective was to identify patterns that consisted of various strategies of goal management among pati

This study explores the stability and change in maternal life satisfaction and psychological distress following the birth of a child with a congenital anomaly using 5 assessments from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study collected from Pregnancy Week 17 to 36 months postpartum. Participating mothers were divided into those having infants with (a) Down syndrome (DS; n = 114), (b) cleft lip/palate (CLP; n = 179), and (c) no disability (ND; n = 99,122). Responses on the Satisfaction With Life Scale and a short version of the Hopkins Symptom Checklist were analyzed using structural equation

The IAPT@Flinders Service: adapting the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies model to the emergency department setting in Australia.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the implementation of an Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service at Flinders Medical Centre emergency department (IAPT@Flinders). IAPT, a population-based model of guided self-help for anxiety and depression delivered mainly by phone, was rolled-out nationally in the UK in 2010. There is a growing body of evidence demonstrating its clinical effectiveness and efficiency that can improve treatment adherence, reduce stigma, remove appointment attendance barriers and improve access for hard-to-reach populations. CONCLUSIONS: IAPT@Flinders was the test sit

Exploring perceived AI substitution in future accounting frameworks: the role of psychological trust, anxiety, and cognitive adaptability.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly transforming accounting systems through automation, predictive analytics, intelligent auditing, and financial decision-support systems. While scholarly and professional debates frequently address whether AI may substitute human accountants, empirical evidence examining actual substitution remains limited. Existing studies have primarily focused on technological efficiency and adoption intentions, with insufficient attention given to the psychological factors shaping professionals' perceptions of AI's substitutive potential. This study therefore inve

VR and internet-enhanced, Confucian-adapted ACT for psychological distress in Chinese finance: A randomized controlled trial.

This study evaluated a culturally adapted Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) intervention, enhanced with Virtual Reality (VR) and Confucian values, for psychological distress in Chinese financial employees. In a randomized controlled trial, 82 financial employees were assigned to either the culturally adapted ACT intervention or a standard internet-based ACT control group. Assessments of distress (DASS-21), work/social adjustment (WSAS), and psychological flexibility (AAQ-II) were conducted at baseline, post-intervention (10 weeks), and 8-week follow-up. Both groups reported significant i

Insensitivity as an Adaptive Psychological Resource for Mental Health: Development and Validation of a Scale Among Chinese University Students.

Depression and other mental health problems are increasingly prevalent among university students, highlighting the need to identify psychological resources that support mental well-being and early prevention. Adaptive Insensitivity has recently been proposed as a potentially adaptive psychological resource; however, no validated instrument is currently available to assess this construct. This study developed and validated the Insensitivity Scale (IS) among Chinese university students and further examined the mediating role of rumination in the relationship between insensitivity and depressive

Psychiatric and psychological morbidity as a function of adaptive disability in preschool children with aggressive and hyperactive-impulsive-inattentive behavior.

Children with high levels of aggressive-hyperactive-impulsive-inattentive behavior (AHII; n = 154) were subdivided into those with (n = 38) and without (n = 116) adaptive disability (+AD/-AD) defined as a discrepancy between expected versus actual adaptive functioning. They were compared to each other and a control group of 47 normal children. Both AHII groups were more likely to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder than control children; more symptoms of general psychopathology; greater social skills deficits; more parental

The challenges and facilitators to successful translation and adaptation of written self-report psychological measures into sign languages: A systematic review.

Deaf people are known to have significantly poorer reading comprehension skills when compared to their hearing counterparts. This poses significant threats to text-based psychological assessments. The plethora of text-based self-report measures available provides ample opportunity to translate/adapt existing tools from text to sign language. This paper systematically reviewed the challenges and facilitators faced in previous translations/adaptations with the view to inform recommendations for future practice. This paper reports the results of a Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews

Integrated psychosocial, sleep, and immunonutritional intervention improves psychological adaptation, sleep disturbance, and inflammatory activation in rectal cancer: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing abdominoperineal or intersphincteric resection for low rectal cancer experience profound physiological and psychological stress. Conventional Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols mainly address surgical and metabolic factors but rarely target the host's psychosocial and immunometabolic recovery. STUDY DESIGN: In this single-center randomized controlled trial, 240 patients with stage II-III low rectal cancer (September 2019-September 2021) were randomized (1:1) to receive either standard ERAS care or an integrated perioperative intervention combining

Support usability, institutional trust, and psychological adaptation among international students from war-affected regions in Chinese universities: a mixed-methods study.

Conflict-driven mobility is reshaping international higher education and raising new questions about how universities support students whose learning trajectories have been disrupted by war, political violence, or prolonged instability. Although international student adaptation has been widely examined through the lenses of cross-cultural adjustment, academic integration, and social support, less is known about how students from war-affected regions psychologically experience formal university support as visible, usable, trustworthy, and safe. This gap matters because support services may form
