Primary skin adnexal tumors can be challenging to classify and must be discerned from cutaneous adenocarcinoma metastases from various sites. We evaluated expression of Sox10 and DOG1 in normal cutaneous adnexa and in 194 primary skin adnexal tumors, and compared their performance in discriminating primary skin adnexal tumors from cutaneous metastatic adenocarcinomas with that of p40 and p63. In normal skin adnexa, we noted Sox10 expression in both the secretory and myoepithelial cells in eccrine glands, but only in myoepithelial cells in apocrine glands. DOG1 demonstrated canalicular expressi

AIMS: To determine the distribution of three different intraepithelial growth patterns (pagetoid, bowenoid and papillary) in eyelid sebaceous carcinoma (SC) and correlate them with the clinical characteristics and prognosis.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study. The medical charts and pathological sections were retrospectively reviewed. All eligible patients were followed up for recurrence, metastasis and tumour-related mortality. The clinical significance of each intraepithelial growth pattern was determined by Cox regression.
RESULTS: Of the 214 patients, 67 (31%) presented with intraepit

Although basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma represent the most frequent malignant tumors of the eyelids, a diverse group of rarer adnexal and neuroendocrine neoplasms also demonstrates a strong predilection for this anatomic site. These tumors, including sebaceous carcinoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, primary cutaneous mucinous carcinoma, endocrine-mucin-producing eccrine gland carcinoma (EMPSGC), primary apocrine adenocarcinoma, and primary signet ring (histiocytoid) carcinoma, are characterized by unique epidemiologic patterns, biologic behavior, and histopathologic feat

Salivary gland lymphadenoma is an uncommon neoplasm and malignant transformation is even rarer. Reported tumor types include basal cell adenocarcinoma, sebaceous carcinoma, EBV-associated lymphoepithelial carcinoma, and undifferentiated carcinoma; a squamous phenotype has not been reported. Here we describe the case of a 62-year-old female who underwent total parotidectomy for a painful parotid gland mass of uncertain duration. On microscopic examination, a high grade lymphoepithelial carcinoma with squamous and poroid features arising in a non-sebaceous lymphadenoma was recognized. Both benig

The association of multiple sebaceous neoplasms and visceral malignancies is known as the Muir-Torre syndrome. We describe a patient who had papillary transitional cell carcinoma of the right renal pelvis resected in 1981 and papillary transitional cell carcinoma of the left renal pelvis removed surgically in 1983. Recurrent transitional cell carcinoma necessitated further resection of tumor in the right renal pelvis in 1983, right nephrectomy and partial ureterectomy in 1984, and removal of the right ureteral stump in 1985. History included multiple seborrheic keratoses, a keratoacanthoma and

The case of a clear cell carcinoma of a minor salivary gland, at the basis of the tongue, is described, which represents 1% of malignant tumours of salivary glands. The biological behaviour is not very aggressive and development, which is very slow, is usually asymptomatic, and, indeed, the tumour often reaches considerable dimensions before being diagnosed. There are rare cases of local recurrence and distant metastases. Cases of salivary glands which have become sites of secondary localization of a clear cell tumour, originating in the kidneys, have been described. The interest in the form d

Salivary gland tumor looms as painless enlarging mass which may embrace in both major or minor glands. Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) accord about 40-70% of all salivary gland tumors, where Warthin tumor, basal cell adenoma (BCA), adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), and sebaceous tumors have a strong predilection for major salivary gland. However, polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) has a marked predilection for the minor salivary gland. We present a case of PA in a 26-year-old male patient that has been successfully managed by extracapsular dissection (ECD) without any post-operative complicat

A 75-year-old Caucasian man presented with foreign-body-type irritation of the left eye. Physical examination revealed a 12 x 10-mm nodule in his left upper eyelid, which reportedly had been present unchanged for more than 40 years. No other ophthalmological abnormalities were present. Incisional biopsy of the lesion revealed a malignant tumour that was thought to possibly represent a sebaceous carcinoma. However, a subsequent wide surgical excision showed that the tumour was an eccrine porocarcinoma, a rare sweat gland adenocarcinoma arising from the acrosyringium.

This case report details of a case of cutaneous metastasis from a primary adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus to the right cheek. A 67-year-old male was referred to the maxillofacial department with a 2-3 week history of non-painful swelling of the cheek. A diagnosis of infected sebaceous cyst was made and drainage was attempted with adjunctive antibiotic therapy. Follow up appointments showed no improvement a biopsy was taken. Histology reported presence of metastatic adenocarcinoma, suggesting the gastrointestinal tract as the primary site. An MRI scan was performed showing an oesophageal mass.

Muir-Torre syndrome is a relatively rare cutaneous manifestation of hereditary nonpolypous colorectal cancer (HNPCC). This autosomal dominant syndrome is characterized by a combination of sebaceous gland and malignant visceral tumors. The common sites of internal malignancies are the gastrointestinal tract and urinary system. It appears in early adult life and its clinical course is relatively slow. In some families genetic diagnosis can identify asymptomatic carriers of the mutation. All first-degree relatives, especially mutation carriers, should be referred from the age of 20 years for rout

Although sebaceous glands are prominent on the vulva, sebaceous carcinomas of the vulva rarely occur. In fact, there have been only two cases of sebaceous carcinomas of the vulva reported in the literature. Eighty percent of vulvar cancers are squamous in origin with human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA detected in approximately 60% of these cancers. We present a third patient with sebaceous carcinoma of the vulva and the first to our knowledge that has been analyzed for HPV DNA. The case report and a review of the literature are presented.

CASE REPORT: An 85-year-old woman had a bluish tumor medially on the margin of the left upper eyelid. Malignant melanoma of the conjunctiva was presumed; the lesion was excised and submitted for routine histopathologic examination. There are no signs of recurrence or metastatic disease after follow-up for 1 year.
METHODS: Light microscopy with routine and histochemical stains were used for diagnosis. Immunohistochemical analysis included the use of a broad-spectrum "cocktail" of cytokeratin antibodies (AE1/AE3).
RESULTS: The features were those of a cystic cavity lined with apocrine epitheli

Sebaceous carcinoma is a rare cutaneous malignancy of sebaceous glands, but it is up to 25-fold more common in immunosuppressed individuals. In this narrative review, we examine the current literature on the pathogenesis, incidence, risk factors, prognosis, treatment, and surveillance of sebaceous carcinoma in immunosuppression and highlight practical considerations for providers who care for these patients. Increased incidence may be related to decreased immune surveillance, susceptibility to an unknown viral trigger, microsatellite instability, immunosuppressive medications, and unmasking of

Cutaneous sebaceous neoplasia comprises a spectrum of disease ranging from benign adenomas to malignant carcinomas. The hallmark of these lesions is sebaceous differentiation. However, poorly-differentiated sebaceous carcinoma (SC), which lacks significant overt sebaceous differentiation, can show morphologic overlap with a variety of other basaloid cutaneous neoplasms. The accurate classification of SC is essential not only for diagnosis, but also because of the potential association with Muir-Torre syndrome. Androgen receptor (AR) is a sensitive, but not entirely specific immunohistochemical

Sebaceous carcinoma is a known mimicker of benign conditions, leading to frequent delays in diagnosis and proper treatment. We present two patients with chronic cicatrizing conjunctivitis initially diagnosed as ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) and later found to have sebaceous carcinoma. Both patients presented with unilateral conjunctivitis that failed to improve with topical and systemic therapy, eventually developing fornix foreshortening and extensive symblepharon. Case 1 was diagnosed with ocular MMP based on clinical features alone, while Case 2 was diagnosed with biopsy-negative

Although systemic and local autoimmune diseases are the primary possibilities in the differential diagnosis of noninfectious peripheral ulcerative keratitis (PUK), other unusual etiologies such as systemic or local malignancies also must be considered. We report on two patients with PUK whose study led to the discovery and subsequent treatment of a chronic myelogenous leukemia and a sebaceous cell carcinoma of the eyelid, respectively. The results emphasize the need for meticulous diagnostic pursuit, including the possibility of malignancy in patients with peripheral ulcerative keratitis.

Sebaceous carcinoma of the oral cavity is extremely rare. To date, only 9 cases of primary sebaceous carcinoma involving the oral cavity have been reported in the English literature, with the majority of cases occurring on the buccal mucosa. This report describes a case of sebaceous carcinoma involving the maxillary gingiva. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of sebaceous carcinoma of the gingiva.

CASE REPORT: A 40-year-old woman was referred to our department due to an apparent indolent anterior blepharitis with an indurated node in her right upper eyelid, which had persisted for months. It was believed to be a chalazion associated with an ipsilateral swollen pre-aurical lymph node, which had not responded to conventional treatment. The extemporaneous biopsy was reported as sebaceous carcinoma. Complete exeresis was performed on that eyelid and it was reconstructed with a palate mucosa graft and a glabelar flap. A radical neck dissection was performed later, in order to remove the lymp
