Preoperative coagulation profile screening is routinely performed in otolaryngology before tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy surgery in the United States. Recently there has been controversy as to whether this routine testing is necessary. To evaluate the need for this testing, we reviewed a series of patients with particular attention to abnormal coagulation profiles. Of 91 consecutive patients undergoing tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, or both, four had abnormal preoperative coagulation profiles. Of these patients, one had von Willebrand disease, one had hypofibrinoginemia, and two had a transie

This article presents an innovative approach to adenoidectomy training through the development of a 3-dimensional (3D) printing model, termed e-A.L.Ex (endoscopic-adenoidectomy learning experience). Adenoidectomy, a common procedure in otolaryngology, has evolved with the integration of endoscopic techniques, necessitating precise training methodologies. The model, created from computed tomography scans and utilizing 3D printing technology, accurately replicates anatomical structures crucial for adenoidectomy. Surgical simulation with bovine thymus mimics adenoid tissue, providing a realistic

Nasopharyngeal soft tissue is most commonly adenoid hypertrophy in children. Although rare, nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) does occur in children. Nasal obstruction, serous otitis media, hearing problems, and tinnitus are common signs and symptoms of all nasal diseases. For this reason, the majority of NPC presents with advanced disease at the time of the diagnosis. This paper reported 7-year-old boy who was admitted to the hospital for adenoidectomy. He had recurrent adenoidectomy operation due to nasal obstruction. NPC had been diagnosed suspecting the hard mass in the nasopharynx during the

The characteristics of 137 patients referred to the Speech Clinic at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada during the past 8 years for the investigation of persistent hypernasality after adenoidectomy are reported. Over 30% of the patients had preoperative factors that are thought to increase the risk, such as submucous cleft palate, fluid regurgitation through the nose, a family history of velopharyngeal insufficiency or clefting, or hypernasality. Fifty percent of the patients required pharyngoplasty to correct hypernasality, 37% required speech therapy alone, and 13% improved with

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to better characterize factors associated with refractory rhinitis in pediatric patients who underwent adenoidectomy compared to those who had symptom resolution.
METHODS: The authors conducted a case series of patients younger than 18 years old who underwent adenoidectomy at Boston Medical Center from October 2012 to December 2018. Patients who underwent tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy or who underwent adenoidectomy for indications other than rhinitis were excluded. Patients who had refractory rhinitis symptoms postoperatively were compared to those

This retrospective study was undertaken to evaluate the incidence of hemorrhage in nonselected patients requiring surgical treatment after adenoidectomy (group 1; 7,785 patients) or tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy (group 2; 6,794 patients). Postoperative bleeding from the tonsillar fossae occurred in 200 patients (2.94%). Primary hemorrhage (< 24 hours) clearly prevailed in groups 1 (86%) and 2 (78%). There was 1 case with a lethal outcome following tonsillectomy (0.007%). Bleeding from the epipharynx occurred in 17 patients of group 1 (0.21%). A total of 5 patients received blood

Altered speech related to velopharyngeal insufficiency is a rare but well-recognised complication of adenoidectomy. Over a 20 year period, 42 patients were referred to the Edinburgh cleft team for investigation of altered speech persisting for more than 12 months after adenoidectomy. We studied the cases to ascertain the incidence, clinical features and causes of altered speech in these patients and to assess the efficacy of a selective treatment policy. All data were prospectively collected when the patients were assessed in a multidisciplinary clinic and investigated by videofluoroscopy. Nas

OBJECTIVES: Recent literature has suggested that histopathologic analysis of routine tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (T&A) specimens may be unnecessary. This study investigates T&A specimen handling practices in the United States between 1989 and 1999.
METHODS: Surveys were sent to 4715 members of the American Academy of Otolaryngology. Surveys assessed practice type, pathologic processing practices (full, gross, no pathology), and reasons for change. The authors also performed a retrospective analysis of 1583 pediatric T&A specimens for evidence of occult malignancy.
RESULTS: Practice types

UNLABELLED: Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, one of the major procedures among otolaryngologist, may have risk in post operative complications which can be either non severe complications (dysphagia, wound pain, dehydration) or serious complications (Bleeding, partial airway obstruction). Meticulous attention to surgical techniques and technical advance in anesthesiology have significantly reduced the number of complications. In Thailand, there are few reports about the adenotonsillectomy complications so the objectives of the present study were to determine the prevalence and related risk fac

Adenoidectomy is among the most frequent surgical procedures performed on children. The rationale for adenoidectomy is to remove a chronically infected or enlarged and obstructing adenoid. Adenoidectomies are performed on children who have recurrent or chronic otitis media with effusion, on children with chronic rhinosinusitis, and on children with nasopharyngeal obstruction causing sleep disturbances and continuous mouth breathing. Various underlying factors that lead to adenoidectomy are also associated with asthma. Asthma is associated with recurrent respiratory tract infections predisposin

The aim of this paper is evaluate the risk and the benefit to tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy in very young children. Between January 1989 and May 1993 we have operated on 166 children less than 3 years old (98 adenoidectomies and 68 adenotonsillectomies). 19 one year old children were submitted to adenoidectomy and 7 to tonsillectomy, the youngest was 7 months old. The indication for adenoidectomy were prevalent mouth breathing, snoring and recurrent otitis media; the criteria for tonsillectomy have been obstructive sleep problems, history of snoring, eating and swallowing disorders (97% of c

A series of children having tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy was investigated for hypoxaemia during sleep and to assess the value of signs and symptoms as predictors of hypoxaemia. Forty-four children were studied the night before surgery. Oxygen saturation (SaO2) was measured whilst the child was awake using a pulse oximeter and when the child was asleep oxygen saturation. ECG and chest impedance were continuously monitored and recorded. In addition, 20 control children having urological surgery were studied in the same way. All the measures of hypoxaemia (awake SaO2, baseline asleep SaO2, num

OBJECTIVE: There is still no consensus about the necessity of histopathological analysis of routine tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy specimens. In this study, our goal was to determine the incidence of unexpected pathological findings in routine tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy specimens. The results are discussed in the light of current literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patient data were obtained from the archives of the departments of otorhinolaryngology and pathology. Between November 1992 and July 2006, chronic, recurrent infections or obstructive problems led to bilateral tonsillectom
