The lymphoid tissue of Waldeyer's ring, and particularly the nasopharyngeal tonsil (adenoids), appears to be functionally comparable to nasal-associated lymphoid tissue in rodents. Antigen-stimulated lymphoid follicles give rise to: (a) clonal B-cell expansion; (b) B-cell receptor affinity maturation; (c) positive selection of B cells according to receptor affinity for antigen; (d) differentiation to B memory cells and plasma cells; and (e) variable induction of the joining (J)-chain gene. B-cell differentiation is also important to promote downstream isotype switching of the immunoglobulin (I

The adenoids have been studied by immunocytochemistry and electron microscopy in children with and without adenoidal enlargement. Compared with normal adenoids, the enlarged ones showed a marked increase in the number of intraepithelial gamma-delta TCR+ lymphocytes and a slight increase in the number of intraepithelial CD8+ lymphocytes. This was accompanied by large amounts of dendritic human lymphocyte antigen (D related) (HLA-DR+) S-100+ accessory cells in the lymphoid tissue underlying the epithelium. By electron microscopy, dead epithelial cells apposed to intraepithelial lymphocytes, and

From 274 adenoidectomized children 1-16 years of age two groups were selected: children with a history of recurrent otitis media and/or otosalpingitis (middle ear effusion) and those in which nasal obstruction was the main symptom. In all, 154 children were subjected to an allergy investigation including history, skin tests, eye tests, determination of IgE and RAST, blood eosinophils and immunoglobulins G, A and M. No increased incidence of immunoglobulin deficiency was found in either group in comparison with unselected children. A family history of atopic disease and/or otitis media was high

Nasal endoscopy is the best choice for evaluation of adenoid size, but very few studies published on the endoscopic quantitative assessment. This study aimed to newly propose and validate a modified adenoid grading system (MAGS) with the existing endoscopic scoring methods of adenoid size. A prospective study on children with chronic mouth breathing and having endoscopic nasal examination was conducted. Digital images obtained during endoscopic examination were evaluated with the traditional method and the MGAS. Adenoid size was also evaluated by intraoperative nasal endoscopy among those unde

OBJECTIVE: To examine the expression of cysteinyl leukotriene receptor-1 (CysLTR-1) and cysteinyl leukotriene receptor-2 (CysLTR-2) in the adenoid tissues from children with adenoid hypertrophy (AH) and to explore the role of leukotrienes in the pathogenesis of AH.
METHODS: Sixty children with AH who were treated by adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy were classified into two groups: simple AH and AH plus allergic rhinitis (n=30 each). Twenty children who underwent tonsillectomy due to recurrent purulent tonsillitis were selected as the control group. The expression of CysLTR-1 and CysLTR-2 in

Forty-six children were independently assessed with respect to size of adenoids and other clinical features by 3 observers of differing experience. Similar assessment was made of adenoid area and post-nasal-space airway from lateral cephalometric X-rays. The inter-observer agreement for these findings has been calculated. Absolute agreement between observers for the assessments is poor and in some instances this is related to clinical experience. In relative terms the agreement is more satisfactory. A nasal obstruction score due to adenoid enlargement has been derived from assessment of mouth

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) and adenoid basal carcinoma (ABC) of the uterine cervix are rare tumors that have often been regarded as a single entity. We studied 28 cases of these neoplasms, with 14 cases in each category. Most patients were over 60 years of age, and there was a high proportion of black women. The majority of the women with ACC presented with postmenopausal bleeding and had an obvious mass on pelvic examination. Despite the tumors' architectural similarity to ACC of the salivary gland, microscopic examination of the cervical carcinomas showed necrosis, a high mitotic rate, a

The term "adenoid ameloblastoma" (AA) was formally introduced as an aggressive subtype of conventional ameloblastoma, and the name remains today despite controversies surrounding its nomenclature. As additional cases accumulated, the 2022 WHO Classification of odontogenic tumors classified AA as a distinct entity, and not a subtype of ameloblastoma. Although AA shares microscopic features with other odontogenic tumors, including adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT), dentinogenic ghost cell tumor (DGCT), and odontogenic carcinoma with dentinoid (OCD), recent genetic investigations have shed ligh

OBJECTIVES: To determine the reliability of ultrasound in the diagnosis of adenoid hypertrophy in children.
METHODS: The subjects were divided into three groups: Group A: Pre-experiment group: 30 children who were hospitalized for adenoidal hypertrophy were selected, and preoperative ultrasound was used to measure adenoid thickness. Their re-confirmed Adenoid ultrasound measurement thickness was obtained during surgery under the guidance of metal instruments; Group B: Ultrasound screening group: 1898 children aged 3-12 y were selected, and their adenoids were examined by ultrasonography to ob

This paper attempts to identify the sources and evaluate the prevalence of halitosis in children with adenoid hypertrophy. The study included pediatric patients admitted for adenoidectomy due to obstructive symptoms. Patients with possibly other causes of halitosis, were excluded from the study. Halitosis was detected in 30 out of 136 children (22.1%). The effect of adenoid hypertrophy on halitosis was confirmed by the significant reduction in the organoleptic score rated according to the Rosenberg scale (on average by 2°) and the levels of volatile sulfur compounds (on average 84 ppb) post-ad

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare tumor arising from the minor salivary glands;, the palate being the commonest site. Distant metastasis and perineural invasion areis common in adenoid cystic carcinoma. Diagnosis of adenoid cystic carcinoma is made usually with the help of clinical features, radiographic features and histologic features. We reported a case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of palate involving left maxillary sinus. The diagnosis of the case and brief review of literature of adenoid cystic carcinoma is discussed. The aim here is to highlight the importance of diagnosis, treatment and

OBJECTIVE: To review the clinical presentation and imaging findings of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of the period between January 1990 and July 2004, comprising five cases of ACC of the breast, all in women, among 4,036 malignant lesions diagnosed (0.12%). We reviewed the available imaging studies (mammography in all five cases, ultrasound in four, and magnetic resonance in one). We also reviewed the clinical presentation and evolution in all patients.
RESULTS: Three patients presented with palpable lesions. Mammographic findings co

The adenoid cystic carcinoma represents less than 1% of all the malignant tumours located in the larynx. Only about 80 cases have been described so far in world literature. In contrast with the epidermoid carcinoma of the larynx, the adenoid cystic carcinoma is not apparently related to common risk factors such as smoking. However the prognosis is much worse, with survival rates of less than 20% after 15-20 years. Treatment is surgical, although radiotherapy may be of help. In this paper a new case of adenoid cystic carcinoma located in the supraglottis of a 26-years-old woman is reported and

Diseases of the adenoids and tonsils are a frequent cause for patients to seek medical attention. A thorough understanding of the disease processes reflected in the adenoids and tonsils and their diagnosis and treatment is an important part of routine care delivery. Diagnostic methodologies and timing of surgical intervention are reviewed along with general considerations relating to the differential diagnosis in adult and pediatric patients.

Twelve cases of pure adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast were reviewed. Patients ranged in age from 34 to 69 years. Seven carcinomas were in the right breast, and five in the left; five of the 12 were located in the central region of the breast, five in the upper outer quadrant, and the two in the upper inner and lower inner quadrants, respectively. Average diameter of the primary tumors was 2.5 cm (range, 0.7 to 6.0). We graded the tumors according to a system used for adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary gland: five tumors were grade I, six were grade II, and one was grade III. An ave
