Adherence to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a critical problem. Poor adherence (30-60%) to CPAP is widely recognized as a significant limiting factor in treating OSA, reducing the overall effectiveness of the treatment and leaving many OSA patients at heightened risk for co-morbid conditions, impaired function and quality of life. The extant literature examining adherence to CPAP provides critical insight to measuring adherence outcomes, defining optimal adherence levels, and predicting CPAP adherence. This research has revealed salie

INTRODUCTION: Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are considered the standard of care for treating opioid use disorder (OUD), but their overall public health impact is limited by poor retention and adherence. Previous reviews synthesizing findings from randomized controlled trials suggest that psychosocial interventions can be impactful on enhancing MOUD outcomes, particularly contingency management (CM) approaches. However, most reviews have focused on MOUD treatment retention rather than MOUD adherence, which is a related but separate construct as being considered in treatment does no

BACKGROUND: Clinical practice guidelines have the potential to improve healthcare quality and safety in those with cardiovascular disease. However, guideline adherence is a challenge worldwide.
AIMS: We aim to determine the types and effects of interventions that target healthcare professionals to improve adherence to cardiovascular disease treatment guidelines-specifically for atrial fibrillation, ischaemic heart disease, heart failure, dyslipidaemia, and/or hypertension in ambulatory care.
METHODS: The following databases were searched from January 2012 to September 2023: MEDLINE, CINAHL,

Adherence to dialysis, medication regimens and dietary and fluid intake recommendations can improve quality of life and survival in chronic kidney disease, but non-adherence is prevalent. This review and meta-analysis investigated the effects of behavioral interventions on treatment adherence in chronic kidney disease and examined intervention characteristics (Behavior Change Techniques and delivery methods) associated with direct and indirect measures of adherence. Literature searches in five databases identified 149 eligible studies (255 study arms; 15878 patients). Random-effects meta-analy

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-limiting genetic disorder predominantly affecting the lungs and pancreas. Airway clearance techniques (ACTs) and exercise therapy are key components of physiotherapy, which is considered integral in managing CF; however, low adherence is well-documented. Poor physiotherapy adherence may lead to repeated respiratory infections, reduced exercise tolerance, breathlessness, reduced quality of life, malaise and reduced life expectancy, as well as increased use of pharmacology, healthcare access and hospital admission. Therefore, evidence-based strategies t

BACKGROUND: Lack of adherence to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) is a significant problem resulting in incomplete cytogenetic response and increased mortality in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Few studies have been conducted on interventions to improve adherence. The authors conducted a systematic review to explore studies that examined the impact of strategies to improve TKI adherence among individuals with CML.
METHODS: The first 2 authors completed a systematic literature review according to the guidelines in Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysi

Non-adherence to anti-tuberculosis (anti-TB) medication is a major risk factor for poor treatment outcomes. We therefore assessed the effectiveness of medication adherence enhancing interventions in TB patients. We report a systematic review of randomized controlled trials that included either latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) or active TB patients. Outcomes of interest included adherence rate, completed treatment, defaulted treatment and treatment outcomes. We identified four LTBI and ten active TB studies. In active TB patients, directly observed treatment (DOT) by trained community worke

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of eHealth-based interventions on patient adherence to components of cardiac rehabilitation (CR).
METHODS: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses statement guided this review. Medline, CINAHL, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for studies published from January 1996 to December 2017. All studies were included in which eHealth-based components of CR and its effects on patient adherence were measured. Because this review included a heterogeneous group of study designs, the authors qu

The introduction of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has helped HIV population to live longer, but they could face not only AIDS-related morbidity but also other non-communicable diseases. Paying attention to ART adherence requires a system thinking with the life-long factors, individual-environment interactions and contextualized dynamics. Although several quantitative research had been conducted, they were not able to fully demonstrate the development of research approaches and scopes of previous studies. Essential and practical public health policy should be based on the most accessible and str

OBJECTIVES: Adherence is critical for maximizing the effectiveness of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in preventing HIV infection. Strategies for promoting adherence to HIV treatment, and their potential application to PrEP adherence, have received considerable attention. However, adherence promotion strategies for prevention medications have not been well characterized and may be more applicable to PrEP. We aimed to identify adherence support interventions that have been effective in other prevention fields and could be applied in the HIV prevention context to support pill taking among PrEP u

BACKGROUND: The study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of two different interventions on oral contraception (OC) adherence and condom use.
STUDY DESIGN: A total of 1,155 women 16-24 years of age requesting OC were randomized to receive either face-to-face behavioral counseling and education at their baseline clinic visit (C group; n=383) or this same intervention followed by monthly phone calls for 6 months (C+P group; n=384) or standard care (S group; n=388). Phone interviews at 3, 6 and 12 months after the initial visit as well as a medical record review assessed OC continuation,

BACKGROUND: Globally, 1.8 million children<15 years are living with HIV. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), as a region, is heavily burdened by HIV, with 90% of new infections among children happening there. Within SSA, Uganda has an HIV prevalence of 7.2% among 15-49-year-olds, with high prevalence in Masaka region (12%). Uganda also reports unprecedented numbers of perinatally HIV-infected children, with close to 150,000 children (ages 0-14) living with HIV (CLHA). However adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) among children and youth is poor, and has been attributed to economic insecurity, inclu

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder associated with significant health, quality of life and psychosocial problems. The aims of this review are to investigate the contribution of psychological constructs and theory to the assessment and treatment of OSA. Adherence to CPAP treatment remains a primary concern for improving treatment outcomes for OSA. Modifiable, psychological constructs of self-efficacy, coping, social support, treatment satisfaction and self-reported daytime sleepiness improve the prediction of CPAP adherence. These predictors are particularly robust in the

INTRODUCTION: Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) deeply impacts the well-being of adolescents and young adults (AYA), resulting in poor treatment adherence. Identifying psychosocial challenges and preferred interventions is essential to enhance treatment adherence and outcomes in this unique group.
METHODS: This was a mixed-method study where participants aged between 15 and 24 years, diagnosed with MDR-TB, were recruited for in-depth interviews and a semi-structured questionnaire.
RESULTS: The individual-level psychosocial challenges included mental stress, suicidal ideation, relucta

Adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET) is used to prevent recurrence and reduce mortality for women with hormone receptor positive breast cancer. Poor adherence to AET is a significant problem and contributes to increased medical costs and mortality. A variety of problematic symptoms associated with AET are related to non-adherence and early discontinuation of treatment. The goal of this study is to test a novel, telephone-based coping skills training that teaches patients adherence skills and techniques for coping with problematic symptoms (CST-AET). Adherence to AET will be assessed in real-time f

Lipid-lowering medications have been shown to be efficacious, but adherence is suboptimal. This is a narrative, perspective review of recently published literature in the field of medication adherence research for lipid-lowering medications. We provide an overview of the impact of suboptimal adherence and use a World Health Organization framework (patient, condition, therapy, socioeconomic, and health system-related systems) to discuss factors that influence hyperlipidemia treatment adherence. Further, the review involves an evaluation of intervention strategies to increase hyperlipidemia trea

Symptom burden and poor adherence to oral anticancer agents remain significant clinical problems. This study examined feasibility, preliminary efficacy, and satisfaction with ADHERE, a nurse practitioner intervention that promotes symptom management and adherence among patients prescribed oral agents. The intervention group (which received one semistructured, face-to-face session followed by three weekly telephone sessions using motivational interviewing, brief cognitive-behavioral therapy, and a toolkit to promote self-management) had significantly lower symptom severity postintervention.
