Adjustment disorder is a disorder characterized by an extreme emotional reaction to a stressor. It is defined diagnostically with either the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual V or ICD-11 definitions. There is currently a diagnostic tool that is still being validated to assist with diagnosing adjustment disorder. The prevalence of this disorder ranges from 0.2% to 40%, depending on the stressful circumstances that the patient experiences. There are several treatments available for adjustment disorder, ranging from psychological interventions, natural therapies to pharmacotherapies.

BACKGROUND: Adjustment disorder requires therapeutic intervention because of its complications, which include a significant risk of suicide, but evidence-based therapeutic guidelines are not available.
AREAS OF UNCERTAINTY: The main problem is related to answer to the following question: What is the optimal therapeutic approach to adjustment disorder? In this respect we review all randomized controlled trials that aimed to investigate therapeutic interventions for adjustment disorder in adult populations.
DATA SOURCES: Comprehensive search of the electronic database PubMed (January 1980-June

Background: In this paper, we aimed to examine the patterns of sleep disturbance in adjustment disorder (AD) and depressive episode (DE), to examine the variables associated with sleep disturbance in AD and DE and associated impairment in functioning. Methods: This is a multi-centre case-control study of 370 patients: 185 patients with AD and 185 patients with a diagnosis of DE, recruited from the liaison psychiatry services of three Dublin hospitals. We examined the participants' sleep pathology using the sleep disturbance items on the Schedule for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry, and

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with adjustment disorder (AD) are at risk of presenting suicidal symptoms. Certain personality traits are linked to suicidal tendencies. There is a lack of information about the link between suicide and personality patterns in adolescents with AD.
AIMS: To identify the personality characteristics that predispose to or prevent the development of suicidal ideation and behavior among adolescents with AD.
METHOD: We recruited 108 adolescents with AD at a public mental health center near Barcelona (Spain). They were administered the Inventario de Riesgo Suicida para Adoles

BACKGROUND: Little is known about suicidal ideation and behaviours in adjustment disorder (AD). In this paper we sought to examine the variables independently associated with suicidal ideation and behaviour in patients diagnosed with AD or depressive (DE) episode among psychiatric outpatients and in liaison psychiatry.
METHODS: 370 patients who were referred to the liaison psychiatry services (including those seen in the Emergency Department) at 3 Dublin hospitals, and were clinically diagnosed with either DE or AD, based on the ICD 10 diagnostic criteria, were recruited to the study. We exam

In adjustment disorder (ICD: F43.2) the danger of suicide is greater, and specific dream quality may be characteristic of this state, too. Moreover adjustment disorder, suicide and quality of dream can be related to different types of trauma the patient had during life. Considering these aspects we examined with questionnaires 41 patients with adjustment disorder and 41 control persons with no diagnosed psychiatric disorder. Our results suggest that in adjustment disorder the danger of suicide is significant, nightmare and dreams with negative affect often occur. If these patients went through

BACKGROUND: Adjustment disorders are often associated with suicidal behaviour but there is little information regarding the nature of the relationship and the effect of adjustment disorders on the suicidal process. The authors' goal was to investigate the association of adjustment disorders (with depressed mood) and suicide in adolescents by means of a psychological autopsy study.
METHOD: Relatives and other informants of 19 suicide victims were interviewed by means of a semi-structured interview schedule. Differences in duration of the suicidal process between suicide victims diagnosed with

An altered perception of pain has been described for several psychiatric disorders. To date the influence of adjustment disorders (AD) on pain perception has not been described. Here, we investigated perception of experimentally induced pain in 15 patients suffering from AD (subtype with depressive symptoms) and controls matched for age and sex. Thresholds and tolerances were assessed for thermal and electrical pain on both sides of the body. We found an overall increase of pain thresholds and tolerances in AD patients as compared to controls, predominately on the right side of the body. Analo

INTRODUCTION: Autogenic training is a widely recognised psychotherapy technique. The British School of Autogenic Training cites a large list of disorders, states, and changes, where autogenic training may prove to be of help. We wanted to explore the application of autogenic training as a therapy for adjustment disorder in adults. Our sample consisted of a homogeneous group of 35 individuals, with an average age of 39.3 +/- 1.6 years, who were diagnosed with adjustment disorder, F 43.2, in accordance with ICD 10 search criteria.
AIM: The aim of our study was to research the effectiveness of a

Conscription has been employed for more than a century. To evaluate the course and fate of conscripts deemed mentally unfit for immediate continued service, a prospective questionnaire study of conscripts referred for mental evaluation was conducted. Questionnaires were completed at the time of enrollment, time of admittance for evaluation, time of discharge from their evaluation and at 1-year follow-up. Out of a class of 6949 conscripts, 93 were referred for psychiatric evaluation and 69 of those referred decided to enter the study (60 of these were in time deemed unfit for further military s

As a result of the burden of a somatic illness, mental illnesses can newly occur or existing ones can worsen. Psychiatric comorbidity in turn significantly worsens the prognosis of somatic illnesses. Adjustment disorders play an important role here: they significantly impair the active management of the underlying disease. The prevalence of adjustment disorders in somatic illnesses varies greatly depending on the context. Somatic physicians are the primary points of contact for those affected and play a crucial role. However, due to a lack of therapeutic guidelines, specialists in somatic disc

BACKGROUND: Adjustment and stress-related disorders are prevalent among psychiatric service users. Despite their prevalence, little is known about their prognosis. To reduce that gap, the present article documents the service use and diagnostic outcomes of people with adjustment or stress-related disorders presenting at Singapore's largest psychiatric emergency department.
METHODS: Administrative data from 2014 to 2021 was retrieved to follow a group of 683 service users whose first-ever psychiatric presentation in 2014 warranted a diagnosis of adjustment or stress-related disorder. People we

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of adjustment disorder is common in clinical practice, yet there is lack of research on the etiology and epidemiology of adjustment disorders. The goal of this systematic review was to evaluate predictors of adjustment disorders in adults.
METHODS: We conducted systematic searches in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO. We included 70 studies that examined thirteen theoretically-derived and predefined predictors of adjustment disorders with a total of 3,449,374 participants.
RESULTS: We found that female gender, younger age, unemployed status, stress, physical illness and

BACKGROUND: Adjustment disorders (also known as mental distress in response to a stressor) are among the most frequently diagnosed mental disorders in psychiatry and clinical psychology worldwide. They are also commonly diagnosed in clients engaging in deliberate self-harm and in those consulting general practitioners. However, their reputation in research-oriented mental health remains weak since they are largely underresearched. This may change when the International Statistical Classification of Diseases-11 (ICD-11) by the World Health Organization is introduced, including a new conceptuali

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis and treatment of mood disorders in youth are still problematic because in this age the clinical presentation is atypical, and the diagnostic tools and the therapies are the same as that used for the adults. Mood disorders are categorically divided into unipolar disorders (major depressive disorder and dysthymic disorder) and bipolar disorder in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fourth Edition, Text Revision), but mood symptoms are also comprised in the diagnostic criteria of the adjustment disorder (AD), which occur in many different psychiatric disor

The objectives of this study were to determine the frequency of adjustment disorders in psychiatric hospital and to establish the clinical and evolutional profiles of these disorders. A descriptive and retrospective study with approximately 115 patients hospitalized a first time in a psychiatric setting of the university hospital of Monastir in Tunisia for adjustment disorders according to the DSM-IV. The frequency of adjustment disorders in a psychiatric hospital was estimated at 11,8 %. The majority of patients were young (65,3 % between 16 and 20), female (60,9 %), of low professional and s

BACKGROUND: A review of the research literature on the diagnostic category of adjustment disorder indicates that its construct validity has not been established. Nevertheless, the diagnosis is made frequently, with an estimated incidence of 5-21% in psychiatric consultation services for adults.
METHODS: Retrospective data was used to evaluate the construct validity of the adjustment disorder diagnostic category. The data primarily consisted of SF-36 Health Status Survey responses by a large group of adult psychiatric outpatients before treatment and again six months after beginning treatment.

The prevalence of DSM-III conduct and adjustment disorders in two adolescent psychiatric facilities, both located near large U.S. cities, was investigated. Overall, 31.6% of the adolescent inpatients were conduct disordered while 12.5% were adjustment disordered. The conduct disorders were primarily "aggressive" subtypes suggesting that this characteristic may influence hospitalization and diagnostic decisions. Such data on prevalence assists future treatment planning, allowing anticipation of case loads.
