Recent trends in UK child and adolescent mental health.

BACKGROUND: Past studies have documented rising levels of conduct problems among UK adolescents in the last quarter of the twentieth century, and increased rates of emotional difficulties between the 1980s and 1990s. METHOD: We used parent, teacher and youth ratings from two large scale, nationally representative studies of 5-15 year-old carried out in 1999 and 2004 to assess whether these increases continued into the early years of the new millennium. RESULTS: Ratings on most "problem" sub-scales remained stable or showed small declines over this period, and parent and teacher reports sugge

Improving the health and well-being of adolescent boys.

Adolescent men are at risk of having significant unmet health care needs. Like adolescent girls, they have complex health care needs and are more likely than younger children to be to be uninsured. They are less likely than women and other age groups to seek medical attention from traditional sources of care. Because of inadequate youth-oriented services, as well as teens' developmental stage, they have a tendency to receive care that is brief and problem oriented [20]. Such care is not likely to address complex problems that may be related to risk behaviors. Adolescent boys are also more conc

A survey of pediatric nephrologists on adolescent sexual health.

Chronic renal disease often has an adverse effect on adolescent physiologic and psychosocial development. The severity of the disease may necessitate that the pediatric nephrologist be the adolescent's main medical provider and the most available physician to screen for adolescent health risk behaviors. The purpose of this study was to determine pediatric nephrologists' practices of sexual history taking and diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections in their adolescent patients. A survey was performed on a convenience sample of 66 pediatric nephrologists attending an education

Emergency contraception: a national survey of adolescent health experts.

In a survey of 167 physicians with expertise in adolescent health, 84% said they prescribe contraception to adolescents, but only 80% of these prescribe emergency contraception, generally a few times a year at most. Some 12% of respondents said they believe that providing emergency contraception to adolescents would encourage contraceptive risk-taking, 25% said they think it would discourage correct use of other methods and 29% said they think repeated use of the method could post health risks. Physicians who were more likely than their colleagues to prescribe emergency contraception included

Cohort Profile: The Tokyo Adolescent Mental Health Study (TAMHS).

The Tokyo Adolescent Mental Health Study (TAMHS) is an ongoing, school-based longitudinal cohort designed to elucidate the developmental trajectories of mental health among adolescents in Japan and to inform evidence-based strategies for promoting adolescent well-being. Since its inception in 2009, TAMHS has annually tracked adolescents aged 12-18 from a Tokyo secondary school known for its tradition of enrolling twins and triplets. Participants are followed for up to 6 years. As of 2024, 2,435 adolescents (1,211 boys, 1,196 girls, 28 unspecified), including 551 twins and triplets (22%), have

Population-level effects of Hurricane Sandy on adolescent health.

BACKGROUND: Disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity due to climate change. Youth are the largest and most vulnerable group exposed to disasters. More evidence is needed regarding how youth mental health and health behaviors vary based on disaster exposure, how mental health influences health behaviors, and how diverse groups of youth may be differentially affected. METHODS: Using data from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey and Federal Emergency Management Agency, we examined the impact of Hurricane Sandy (2012) on mental health (sadness, suicidality) and health behaviors (substance u

Changes in adolescent mental health during the Covid pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Previous pandemics around the world have shown that negative emotions are intensified in individuals when restrictions are imposed on human daily life activities. This study aims to draw attention to the pandemic-specific factors that might be associated with the severity of depression, anxiety, and COVID-19 phobia of high school students. METHODS: A total of 1431 high school students aged 14 to 18 years were invited to participate in this study using online survey forms. They were asked to fill out a questionnaire about themselves and the changes in their lives during the pandemi

Public Health Considerations for Adolescent Initiation of Electronic Cigarettes.

Adolescent use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) has increased dramatically, with younger and nicotine-naive adolescents starting to use these devices and use them more frequently than combustible cigarettes. In emerging evidence, it is shown that e-cigarettes are not effective in helping adult smokers quit and that youth using e-cigarettes are at risk for becoming nicotine dependent and continuing to use as adults. Important gaps in our knowledge remain regarding the long-term health impact of e-cigarettes, effective strategies to prevent and reduce adolescent e-cigarette use, and the i

A comprehensive reproductive health program for vulnerable adolescent girls.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive health of vulnerable adolescent girls is a top priority in global programs. Alcohol consumption, drug abuse, high risk sexual behaviors, sexually transmitted diseases, sexual assault, escape from home, unrestrained sex in the family, history of robbery, imprisonment and living in drug hangouts expose adolescents to different sorts of damage and injury. These adolescent girls are at risk of AIDS and other STDs, unwanted pregnancies, illegal and unsafe abortions, unplanned pregnancy and childbirth, and unsafe motherhood. Therefore, assessing these girls' reproductive hea

Vaccination and adolescent knowledge: health education and disease prevention.

A cross-sectional study in conjunction with a health extension program was conducted with 605 adolescents aged between 13 and 18 years from 22 public schools in Divinópolis, Brazil. The aim of the study was to determine the vaccination status of the adolescents and their level of knowledge of communicable and vaccine-preventable diseases. Three-stage cluster sampling was used comprising schools, classes, and students. The findings show that vaccination coverage among adolescents was 45.1% and yellow fever was shown to have the lowest coverage rate (64%). The most mentioned diseases when the ad

Epigenetics, Early Adversity and Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

Epigenetic modification, such as DNA methylation (DNAm), is a mechanism that can help explain how early adversities can engender long-term vulnerability for mental health problems. At present, there is preliminary evidence to support the possibility of epigenetic mediation: environmental factors are reported to influence offspring DNAm, which in turn associate with child and adolescent psychopathology. However, all analyses have been correlational in nature and, as these studies have focussed on children and adolescents, DNAm has been based on peripheral tissue (cord blood, whole blood, buccal

Adolescent Health Interventions: Conclusions, Evidence Gaps, and Research Priorities.

Adolescent health care is challenging compared to that of children and adults, due to their rapidly evolving physical, intellectual, and emotional development. This paper is the concluding paper for a series of reviews to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions for improving adolescent health and well-being. In this paper, we summarize the evidence evaluated in the previous papers and suggest areas where there is enough existing evidence to recommend implementation and areas where further research is needed to reach consensus. Potentially effective interventions for adolescent health and w

The efficacy of family intervention in adolescent mental health.

The term 'family therapy' is used to encompass a range of approaches that share a common view about the importance of family involvement in psychiatric disorders. This paper reviews the effectiveness of family interventions in adolescent mental health with a special emphasis on single session therapy. Research evidence shows that the family intervention in psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, depression, attention deficit hyperactive disorder, anxiety and anorexia not only provides better outcomes, but also increases client satisfaction with services. Among the family therapy approache

Health-risk behaviours among adolescent survivors of childhood cancer.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to investigate smoking, alcohol use, illicit drug use and sexual risk taking among adolescent survivors of childhood cancer treated in Australia. PROCEDURE: A comparison study selecting on exposure (cancer vs. healthy) and administering a branched computerised questionnaire assessing health-risk behaviour, predominately by telephone interview. One hundred fifty-three adolescent survivors of childhood cancer were compared with age matched healthy adolescents drawn from one of two Australian population based surveys of adolescent health. Contemporary threats to adolescent health in the United States.

Over the past 30 years, adolescents have been the only population in the United States who have not experienced improvement in their health status. Violence has replaced communicable diseases as the primary cause of juvenile mortality and, currently, over 77% of adolescent deaths are caused by accidents, suicide, and homicide. Increasingly, poverty, life-style, and risk-taking behaviors are influencing the morbidities of youth, with associated sequelae of trauma, adolescent pregnancy, substance abuse, physical/sexual abuse, and most other major health problems of adolescents. Clinicians seem t

Mind the Gap: Adolescent/Caregiver Adverse Childhood Experience Reporting Differences and Association With Adolescent Mental Health.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with poor mental health outcomes, yet little is known about discrepancies between adolescent and caregiver reports of ACE exposure. This study examines differences between adolescent self-reported and caregiver-reported ACEs and evaluates how reporting discrepancies are associated with depressive and anxiety symptoms among hospitalized adolescents. METHODS: We recruited 250 adolescent-caregiver dyads from an inpatient adolescent unit in Bronx County, New York. Adolescents and caregivers independently completed ACE questionnaires,
