Induction of housekeeping gene expression after subarachnoid hemorrhage in dogs.

Changes in gene expression are commonly assessed relative to the expression of housekeeping genes, which are assumed to remain unchanged. We tested this assumption in cerebral arteries obtained from dogs 4 and 7 days after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) had been created using the double hemorrhage model. Basilar arteries were removed and examined for expression of messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) levels using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Cross-sections of basilar arteries were stained immunohistochemically for proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and 4',6-diamidino-2-

Human abdominal aortic aneurysms. Immunophenotypic analysis suggesting an immune-mediated response.

Cellular immunity may play a role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. In this report the potential role of these cells in the formation of abdominal aortic aneurysms by immunohistochemistry was investigated. Aortic tissues from 32 patients were examined: 4 normal aortas, 6 aortas with occlusive atherosclerotic disease, 17 abdominal aortic aneurysms, and 5 inflammatory abdominal aneurysms. Using monoclonal anti-CD3 (T cells), anti-CD19 (B cells), anti-CD11c (macrophages), anti-CD4 (T helper cells), and anti-CD8 (T suppressor cells), several distinctions among these groups were found. The am

[Morphology of the coronary arteries following percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty with hemopericardium].

Autopsy findings in a patient with cardiac tamponade following percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) are reported. Angiography during PTCA demonstrated coronary dissection without extravasation of contrast medium at the site of angioplasty. Histologic examination of the dilated coronary segment revealed longitudinal splitting of intima and media as well as circumferential subintimal and submedial dissection. Hemorrhage into plaque, intima, media, adventitia and dissection lumina was found. Disruption of the adventitia was not present. Cardiac tamponade may occur transadventitia

An electron microscopic study of the baroreceptors in the internal carotid artery of the spontaneously hypertensive rat.

The carotid baroreceptor field of normotensive (NTR) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) examined in this study extends for about 0.5 mm along the length and about 1/3 to 1/2 of the circumference of the wall of the internal carotid artery opposite to the carotid body. The vascular wall of the baroreceptor field exhibits neither a marked dilation to form a carotid sinus nor histological differences in the intima and media compared to other parts of the carotid artery. Histologically the adventitia of the baroreceptor field is characterized by (1) an increased thickness and by less well de

Kinetics of alpha-adrenoreceptor blockade by phentolamine in the normal and denervated rabbit aorta and rat vas deferens.

The rates of onset and offset of alpha-adrenoreceptor blockade by phentolamine (5 X 10(-7) M) have been studied on the normal and denervated rabbit aorta and rat vas deferens. Removal of the adventitia with its accompanying sympathetic nerve component results in an approximately threefold increase in the rate of onset of alpha-adrenoreceptor blockade by phentolamine in the rabbit aorta. The rate of offset of blockade by the antagonist on the aorta is likewise faster after the adventitia has been removed (approximately threefold faster for loss of 90% of the antagonist from the region of the re

Artery Tertiary Lymphoid Organs Establish Biological Platforms to Connect Atherosclerotic Plaques to the Brain.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The ability of the nervous system to sense cues from medium and large arteries is critical for maintaining vascular integrity and function. However, there is currently no evidence that atherosclerotic plaques of arteries other than arterioles are directly hard-wired by axons to transmit signals to the brain or that efferent axons from the brain gain access to plaques. Yet, studies in experimental mice have shown that the outer connective tissue coat of arteries, i.e. the adventitia, adopts sentinel functions to indirectly and faithfully connect plaques to the brain forming a

Adventitial pericyte progenitor/mesenchymal stem cells participate in the restenotic response to arterial injury.

Restenosis is a major complication of coronary angioplasty, at least partly due to the fact that the origin and identity of contributing cell types are not well understood. In this study, we have investigated whether pericyte-like cells or mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from the adventitia contribute to restenosis. We demonstrate that while cells expressing the pericyte markers NG2, platelet-derived growth factor receptor β, and CD146 are rare in the adventitia of uninjured mouse femoral arteries, following injury their numbers strongly increase. Some of these adventitial pericyte-like cells ac

Meniscal tear of the knee causing cystic adventitial disease of popliteal artery: support for the synovial theory.

Cystic adventitial disease is a rare cause of calf claudication and is characterized by the development of a mucinous, cystic mass within the outer layer (adventitia) of an artery. The popliteal artery is most commonly affected. Several theories and hypotheses exist regarding the aetiology of this disorder with no clear unifying cause accepted in the literature to date. We describe a case of a 32-year-old female with a one-year history of medial right knee pain and intermittent claudication who was diagnosed with a medial meniscal tear and a large parameniscal cyst communicating with the popli

Adventitial mast cells connect with sensory nerve fibers in atherosclerotic coronary arteries.

BACKGROUND: The number of activated mast cells is increased in the adventitia of coronary segments with plaque rupture and in spastic atherosclerotic coronary segments. Neurogenic activation of mast cells has been demonstrated previously in other tissues. Here we identified and quantified contacts between mast cells and nerves in the adventitia of normal and atherosclerotic coronary segments. METHODS AND RESULTS: Normal (types 0 or I) and atherosclerotic (lesion types II, III, and IV) coronary segments from 22 unselected autopsy cases were stained for mast cells and sensory nerves by a histoc

Influence of long-term experimental orthostatic body position on innervation density in extremity vessels.

The aim of this study was to quantitate the density of nerve terminals as well as their synaptic vesicle population in the adventitia of saphenous (SV and SA) and brachial veins and arteries (BV and BA) obtained from rats maintained in a horizontal control or a tilted position. Adult animals were kept individually in tube-like cages in a 45 degrees head-up position. After 2 wk, both tilted and control animals were anesthetized, and the whole body was perfused with fixative solution at physiological pressure. Vessels segments were then excised for electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry. T

Relationship between Neovascularization and Aortic Wall Enhancement in Type A Aortic Dissection.

BACKGROUND: Aortic wall enhancement (AWE), evaluated with computed tomography angiography in Type B aortic dissection, is associated with aortic remodeling. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between AWE and pathological findings of the aortic wall using an aortic wall sample from a Type A aortic dissection (TAD). METHODS: We examined patients with TAD treated between January 2012 and February 2023. RESULTS: Twelve cases were examined pathologically: five cases in the hyperacute phase, three in the acute phase, and four in the subacute phase. AWE thickness significantly differed a

Adventitial injection of HA/SA hydrogel loaded with PLGA rapamycin nanoparticle inhibits neointimal hyperplasia in a rat aortic wire injury model.

Neointimal hyperplasia is a persistent complication after vascular interventions, and it is also the leading cause of vascular graft restenosis and failure after arterial interventions, so novel treatment methods are needed to treat this complication. We hypothesized that adventitial injection of HA/SA hydrogel loaded with PLGA rapamycin nanoparticle (hydrogel-PLGA-rapamycin) could inhibit neointimal hyperplasia in a rat aortic wire injury model. The HA/SA hydrogel was fabricated by the interaction of hyaluronic acid (HA), sodium alginate (SA), and CaCO3; and loaded with PLGA rapamycin nanopar

Cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery: an argument for the developmental theory.

Cystic adventitial disease is a rare non-atheromatous cause of popliteal artery disease. We report a case of a 54-year-old patient with claudication of the right calf caused by cystic adventitial disease. Intra-operatively, a communication between the adventitia and the knee joint was identified. Connections between the adventitial cyst and the nearby joint have been reported in the literature that support the developmental theory. This theory suggests that cystic adventitial disease is a developmental manifestation of mucin-secreting cells derived from the mesenchyme of the adjacent joint. Th

Induction of experimental aneurysms on the rat common carotid artery using a microsurgical CO2 laser.

Aneurysms were produced on the common carotid artery of rats by milliwatt CO2 laser welding of an adventitia patch over a hole. Sixty-nine animals were operated on. Aneurysms were present in 35 animals (51%), 7 of which ruptured spontaneously. The time to aneurysm formation was 1 week or longer. The adventitia patch aneurysm model has features (reliability, minimal vessel manipulation, histology similar to human berry aneurysm, and spontaneous bleeding tendency) that make it theoretically suitable for the induction of intracranial aneurysms in experimental animals. The microsurgical skills req

Optimization of uretero-intestinal anastomosis in urinary diversion: an experimental study in dogs. II. Influence of exposure to urine on the healing of the ureter and ileum.

The influence of exposure to urine on the ureteric adventitia and the ileal mucous membrane was studied in 10 mongrel dogs. When the ureter was implanted freely into the lumen of the bladder its adventitia became the seat of granulation tissue formation. This is later covered by creeping of transitional epithelium lining the ureter, forming what is in effect a ureteral nipple. Final healing is associated with an unpredictable amount of scarring. Furthermore, it was noted that healing and creeping of the ileal mucous membrane are impeded in the presence of urine. The sum of these effects is tha

A comparative analysis of coronary adventitial T-lymphocytes--an autopsy study.

BACKGROUND: Recent clinical and histopathologic data suggests that inflammation plays a key role in coronary artery plaque instability and subsequent occlusive thrombosis. The intima has received much attention as a site of inflammation, while the adventitia has remained relatively unexplored. The aim of the present study was to investigate the frequency of inflammatory activity in the cap and shoulder region of unruptured, atherosclerotic lesions in coronary arteries and to correlate these findings with distribution of inflammatory cells in adventitia. METHODS: The study was carried out in H

High-Strength Injectable Hydrogel into Perivascular Interstitial Space Enhances Arterial Adventitial Stress.

Injectable hydrogels with strong mechanical properties have significant potential for biomedical applications, including the development of electronic skin, intelligent medical robots, as well as tissue engineering. In this study, we report on an injectable hydrogel with notable tensile strength and adhesion properties, achieved through cross-linking thiol-terminated four-arm poly (ethylene glycol) using silver-doped nano-hydroxyapatite, modified with dopamine. Subsequently, the hydrogel was injected in vivo through the perivascular interstitial space of rats. The hydrogel wrapped around the d

Updates in aortic wall pathology.

Several studies have investigated the pathogenesis of aortic wall abnormalities such as aortic dissection or aneurysm; however, the comprehensive pathological in situ event involved in the development of the disease is not understood well. The vasa vasorum form a network of capillaries or venules around the adventitia and outer media, which play an important role in the aortic wall structure and function. Impairment of their function may induce tissue hypoxia, impede the transfer of cellular nutrients, and cause aortic medial degeneration, which is considered the major predisposing factor to t
