A role for adverse childhood experiences and depression in preeclampsia.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a measure of childhood adversity and are associated with life-long morbidity. The impacts of ACEs on peripartum health including preeclampsia, a common and dangerous hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, remain unclear, however. Therefore, we aimed to determine ACE association with peripartum psychiatric health and prevalence of preeclampsia using a case-control design. METHODS: Clinical data were aggregated and validated using a large, intergenerational knowledgebase developed at our institution. Depression symptoms were measured by standa

Short review on adverse childhood experiences, pelvic pain and endometriosis.

The exposure to adverse childhood experiences has been associated with the subsequent development of several chronic health conditions, including pelvic pain. Endometriosis is a chronic disease characterized by the growth of endometrial-like tissue outside of the uterus, and is considered a common cause of chronic pelvic pain and infertility in reproductive-age women. However, the topic of pelvic pain and endometriosis is fraught with many challenges. This applies not just to clinical practice but also to research where many inconsistencies relating to pelvic pain and endometriosis definitions

Adverse childhood experiences and all-cause mortality risk in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been associated with mortality risk in adulthood. It is unclear, however, whether ACEs perpetrated beyond parents may be associated with mortality risk, if the risk is accumulative or plateaus at a certain frequency, whether associations differ dependent on ACE types, whether types interact with one another, or if observed effects differ by sex. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between ACEs and mortality risk. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: 6319 participants (age range 25-74 years, mean [SD] 46.91 [12.95] years; 51.6 % female) followed from

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Obesity: A One-to-One Correlation?

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been associated with physical and emotional problems such as obesity and depression in adulthood. This study evaluated the relationship between ACE scores and the severity of obesity. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 119 adult patients at the GW Weight Management Clinic. They filled out an ACE survey examining trauma and household dysfunction. The main outcome was the severity of obesity measured by Body Mass Index (BMI). We estimated the adjusted mean difference between high and low ACE risk groups using - linear regress

Prevalence of adverse childhood experiences among Vietnamese high school students.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACE) are linked to a range of negative health outcomes. However, the majority of research has been conducted in high-income-countries and little is known about ACE prevalence in low-and-middle-income-countries (LMIC), where the majority of the world's youth reside. OBJECTIVE: Assess ACE prevalence and demographic correlates in two provinces of the Southeast Asian LMIC Vietnam. METHODS: Prevalence of ACE were assessed among 644 Vietnamese high-school students, using the WHO Adverse Childhood Experiences-International Questionnaire. RESULTS: About 74

The importance of adverse childhood experiences during the perinatal period.

The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study (Felitti et al., 1998) has led to an understanding of how exposure to abuse, neglect, and family dysfunction in childhood are related to subsequent physical and mental health problems. These issues are important to consider during the perinatal period, with studies indicating that pregnant women who report adverse experiences in childhood may be at risk of experiencing mental health and substance use problems. This study examined the association of pregnant women's ACEs with symptoms of depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress, and substance use,

Adverse childhood experiences and health among indigenous persons experiencing homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Current literature has established that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with the onset of a variety of physical, mental, and behavioural illnesses. However, there are few studies that have thoroughly examined this association in low-income or marginalized groups. METHODS: To address this knowledge gap, this study used self-reported data on childhood experiences and adult health outcomes in a sample of 91 Indigenous persons experiencing homelessness. While the primary focus of the study was to assess the relationship between ACEs and health status, we also asses

Total Adverse Childhood Experiences and Preterm Birth: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Total adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are gaining prominence as a risk factor for preterm birth (PTB). The emerging literature examining this relationship reports inconsistent findings. The purpose of this systematic review was to summarize the available evidence exploring whether total ACEs predict PTB. METHODS: A total of 386 studies were returned from searches on PubMed, PsycINFO, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL). Nine studies were selected for final analysis and synthesis based on reporting of total ACEs and preterm birth gestational

Adverse childhood experiences and depression among women in rural Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are a common pathway to adult depression. This pathway is particularly important during the perinatal period when women are at an elevated risk for depression. However, this relationship has not been explored in South Asia. This study estimates the association between ACEs and women's (N = 889) depression at 36 months postpartum in rural Pakistan. METHOD: Data come from the Bachpan Cohort study. To capture ACEs, an adapted version of the ACE-International Questionnaire was used. Women's depression was measured using both major depressive episod

Latent factors of adverse childhood experiences and adult-onset asthma.

Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease with complex etiology. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked to asthma in adulthood. Underlying potential mechanisms for the ACE-asthma relationship include stress-induced inflammatory pathways and immune dysregulation. We conducted a cross-sectional secondary data analysis of the 2013 Alberta ACE Survey to explore the relationship between latent ACE factors and self-reported adult asthma. We evaluated the underlying correlation structure among eight different ACEs using exploratory factor analysis. We conducted a logistic regression mode

Prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACE) in the Czech Republic.

A cross-sectional survey was undertaken to estimate the prevalence of child maltreatment and adverse childhood experiences in the Czech Republic, as data on these is scarce. The survey was conducted among 1760 randomly selected students from five Czech universities. Participants filled in the adverse childhood experiences survey instrument. The results showed that the prevalence of child maltreatment and other adverse childhood experiences is high: emotional abuse was reported by 20.7%, physical abuse by 17.1%, sexual abuse by 6.4%, and physical neglect by 8.0%. Household dysfunction was also

Trends in Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) in the United States.

BACKGROUND: It is important for those called upon to discuss major social determinants of health such as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) to have accurate knowledge about generational trends in their prevalence. OBJECTIVE: To review available trend data on major forms of ACEs. METHODS: A search of academic data bases was conducted by combining the term "trend" with a variety of terms referring to childhood adversities. RESULTS: Available trend data on ACEs from the 20th century show multi-decade declines in parental death, parental illness, sibling death, and poverty, but multi-decade i

Adverse childhood experiences and preschool suspension expulsion: A population study.

BACKGROUND: Preschool suspension and expulsion rates are typically based on teacher reports, and don't simultaneously account for adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). OBJECTIVE: To examine estimates in the United States of parent-reported preschool suspension and expulsion rates, in the context of ACEs. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Parents of children aged 3-5 years old (N = 6,100) in the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health dataset. METHOD: We reported the prevalence estimates of preschool suspension and expulsion, and estimated the unique variance of ACEs as risk factors using weighted

Adverse Childhood Experiences: Implications for Offspring Telomere Length and Psychopathology.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with mental and physical health risks that, through biological and psychosocial pathways, likely span generations. Within an individual, telomere length (TL), an established marker of cellular stress and aging, is associated with both ACE exposure and psychopathology, providing the basis for an emerging literature suggesting that TL is a biomarker of the health risks linked to early-life adversity both within and across generations. The authors tested the effect of maternal ACEs on both the trajectory of infant TL and infant social

Evolving a More Nurturing Society to Prevent Adverse Childhood Experiences.

This article presents a framework for evolving a society that nurtures the health and well-being of its population. We review evidence that adverse social conditions, including poverty, conflict, discrimination, and other forms of social rejection, contribute immensely to our most ubiquitous psychological, behavioral, and health problems. We then enumerate the ways that effective family and school prevention programs could ameliorate much of the social adversity leading to these problems. The widespread and effective implementation of these programs-in primary care, social services, and educat

Colorectal cancer screening and adverse childhood experiences: Which adversities matter?

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been associated with an increased risk of a variety of diseases, including cancer. However, research has not paid enough attention to the association between ACEs and cancer screening. As such, the present study examined the association between ACEs and ever using colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, among adults age 50 and over. Analyses used the 2011 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (n=24,938) to model odds of ever engaging in CRC screening from nine different adversities. Bivariate and multivariate models were fit. In bivariate models, physi
