Nosocomial infection of Aeromonas hydrophila presenting as necrotizing fasciitis.

Aeromonas hydrophila is infrequently reported as a causative organism of necrotizing fasciitis. We report a case of necrotizing fasciitis due to A. hydrophila in a 44-year-old man with Marfan syndrome who underwent valve replacement surgery twice. He was admitted due to a 2-day history of fever. The fever was attributed to hepatitis, and ingestion of herbal medication was suspected to be the cause. The fever relapsed on the 28th day of hospitalization with rapidly progressive erythematous patches on the bilateral lower extremities. Septic shock developed within a few hours, and 2 small diagnos

Antibiotic sensitivities of Aeromonas hydrophila cultured from medicinal leeches.

Increased use of medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) for the treatment of venous congestion in flaps and replanted parts has coincided with reports of soft tissue infections following leech application. We cultured the gullets of 20 medicinal leeches to re-examine the antibiotic sensitivities of Aeromonas hydrophila, the leech enteric organism associated with reported infections. These isolates reflected reported resistance to penicillin and first generation cephalosporins as well as sensitivity to gentamicin, tetracycline and chloramphenicol. Additionally, the cultures were sensitive to ce

Antibiotic sensitivity of two Aeromonas and nine Pseudomonas species.

An agar dilution method was used to determine the in vitro sensitivity of different Pseudomonas and Aeromonas species to sulphonamide, tetracycline, colistin, gentamicin, tobramycin, amplicillin, carbenicillin, and cephalothin. P. aeruginosa was generally sensitive to carbenicillin, colistin, tobramycin, and gentamicin. P. putida and P. fluorescens were generally resistant to beta-lactam antibodies but sensitive to gentamicin and tobramycin. P. cepacia and P. maltophilia were mostly resistant to colistin, gentamicin and tobramycin. Other Pseudomonas species were usually more sensitive to the a

Isolation and Characterisation of Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas veronii and Vibrio cholerae O139 From Diseased Bester Sturgeon (Huso huso × Acipenser ruthenus): A Case Report.

This study investigated bacterial pathogens associated with disease and mortality in farmed bester sturgeon (Huso huso × Acipenser ruthenus) reared in freshwater cages in the Vacha Reservoir, Bulgaria. Affected fish exhibited lethargy, anorexia, haemorrhagic skin lesions and multifocal internal pathology. Histological examination revealed hepatic degeneration and vacuolar change, consistent with systemic bacterial infection. Bacterial isolates recovered from blood and internal organs were identified as Aeromonas hydrophila, A. veronii and Vibrio cholerae O139 using culture-based methods, MALDI

Isolating pathogenic multidrug-resistant Aeromonas hydrophila from diseased fish and assessing the effectiveness of a novel lytic Aeromonas veronii bacteriophage (AVP3) for biocontrol.

The increasing trend of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) pathogens in aquaculture makes it is imperative to find control measures for AMR pathogens causing high economic losses in aquaculture. In the present study, a multidrug resistance (MDR) Aeromonas hydrophila bacterium was isolated from kidney samples of diseased carp originating from a fish farm in Awankot, Rupnagar, Punjab, India. Moribund-infected fish exhibited large irregular hemorrhages on the external body surfaces, exophthalmia and fin-rot-like lesions. Phenotypic characterization using Rimler-Shotts (RS) media showed characteristic

Aeromonas dhakensis: A Zoonotic Bacterium of Increasing Importance in Aquaculture.

Aeromonas dhakensis is increasingly recognised to be an important pathogen responsible for disease losses in warm-water aquaculture and, similar to several other Aeromonas species, it can infect humans. Knowledge of A. dhakensis is accumulating, but this species remains relatively under-investigated compared to its close relative, Aeromonas hydrophila. The significance of A. dhakensis may have been overlooked in disease events of aquatic animals due to issues with reliable identification. Critical to appreciating the importance of this pathogen is the application of dependable molecular tools

Tiptoe Walking in the Presence of Superimposed Aeromonas With Dengue Infection.

The rise in limb salvage surgeries has led to an increase in post-traumatic equinus contractures, resulting in secondary causes of tiptoe walking. There is notable evidence linking superimposed bacteremia to heightened risks of morbidity and mortality in dengue patients, particularly when the immune system is compromised, leading to documented cases of Aeromonas-induced necrotizing fasciitis with myonecrosis. A case report from August 2019 involves a five-year-old boy admitted for dengue fever, which progressed to severe bilateral leg necrotizing fasciitis caused by concurrent Aeromonas infect

The Impact of Cefuroxime Susceptibility on Aeromonas Necrotizing Fasciitis Outcomes.

Despite aggressive antibiotic therapy and surgical debridement, Aeromonas necrotizing fasciitis (NF) can lead to high amputation and mortality rates. Our study compares the different antibiotic minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) via Epsilometer tests (E-tests) between non-survivors and survivors of Aeromonas NF of limbs. A prospective review of 16 patients with Aeromonas NF was conducted for 3.5 years in a tertiary coastal hospital. E-tests were conducted for 15 antimicrobial agents to determine the MIC value for Aeromonas species. These patients were divided into non-survival and surviv

The Animal Model Determines the Results of Aeromonas Virulence Factors.

The selection of an experimental animal model is of great importance in the study of bacterial virulence factors. Here, a bath infection of zebrafish larvae is proposed as an alternative model to study the virulence factors of Aeromonas hydrophila. Intraperitoneal infections in mice and trout were compared with bath infections in zebrafish larvae using specific mutants. The great advantage of this model is that bath immersion mimics the natural route of infection, and injury to the tail also provides a natural portal of entry for the bacteria. The implication of T3SS in the virulence of A. hyd

Vibrio cholerae and Aeromonas: do they share a mutual host?

Species of the genus Aeromonas are native inhabitants of aquatic environments and have recently been considered as an emergent human pathogen. It is estimated that aeromonads cause up to 13% of reported gastroenteritis cases in the United States. Although the autochthonous existence of Aeromonas in the aquatic environment has been established, its natural reservoir is as yet unknown. Chironomids are closely related to mosquitoes except they do not bite and they are the most widely distributed insects in freshwater. They infest drinking water systems in Israel and all over the world. Vibrio cho

Analysis of the interaction of Aeromonas caviae, A. hydrophila and A. sobria with mucins.

Aeromonas species are known to be involved in human gastrointestinal diseases. These organisms colonize the gastrointestinal tract. Aeromonas hydrophila, A. caviae, and A. sobria have been demonstrated microscopically to adhere to animal cell lines that express mucous receptors, but quantitative studies of adherence to mucosal components such as mucin have not been published to date. Purified bovine submaxillary gland, hog gastric mucin, and fish skin mucin were used as a model to study mucin-binding activity among A. caviae, A. hydrophila, and A. sobria strains. Our findings revealed that bin

Nosocomial Aeromonas hydrophila cellulitis and bacteremia in a nonimmunocompromised patient.

An elderly man, without heat in his home for two days, presented with cold, painful, swollen feet. Second-degree frostbite was present. After having moist packs applied to his feet for five days, the patient became febrile and hypotensive, and wet gangrene necessitated left below-knee and right above-knee amputations. Aeromonas hydrophila was isolated from the patient's blood and cultures of the pedal wounds. An etiologic role of the moist pack therapy is postulated.

Jestvirus, a Novel Genus in the Family Autotranscriptaviridae Infecting Aeromonas.

Aeromonas species are ubiquitous, aquatic, opportunistic pathogens; however, their viral predators remain underexplored. Here, we isolated and characterized Aeromonas phage vB_AsaP_JS1, a dsDNA phage with a short non-contractile tail that infects Aeromonas salmonicida. Comparative analyses indicate that vB_AsaP_JS1 diverges from representative T7-like phages, with gene content similarity below 50% and a maximum amino acid identity of 70% or less. It forms a supported monophyletic clade in both phylogenomic and protein-based trees. Gene-sharing network analysis further shows that vB_AsaP_JS1 an

Killing of colistin-resistant Aeromonas hydrophila by a synthetic peptide.

Multi-drug-resistant Aeromonas hydrophila infections are becoming increasingly threatening, and the development of novel antimicrobial drugs is indispensable. Herein, we demonstrate that this novel peptide is highly active against colistin-resistant A. hydrophila strain and shows sustained killing efficacy in vivo. Mechanistic studies showed that D-Q7 interacted with phosphatidylglycerol and lipopolysaccharide in the bacterial cell membrane, with an increase in intracellular ROS as well as a decrease in ATP level, ultimately leading to cell membrane disruption and bacterial death. Importantly,
