Network analysis of physical activity and depressive and affective symptoms during COVID-19 home confinement.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to analyze the network structure of physical activity, frequency, depressive, and affective symptoms in people under home isolation due to COVID-19. METHOD: A longitudinal study was conducted in two phases (beginning (March 19, 2020) and end of home confinement (April 8, 2020)). The sample consisted of 579 participants from Spain (250 men and 329 women) aged 16 to 92 years (overall sample: M = 47.06, SD = 14.52). A network analysis was performed. RESULTS: Four clusters emerged (PA, depressive symptoms, positive affect, and negative affect). A higher fr

Association Between Socio-Affective Symptoms and Glutathione and CD4 and CD8 Lymphocytes in College Students.

Background: The prevalence of anxiety and depression in young students is associated with biosocial factors and scholastic stress. However, few studies have evaluated emotional-affective symptoms that are related to the immune system and antioxidant parameters in young individuals without diagnoses of affective disorders. Aim: This study aims to assess the relationship between emotional-affective symptoms and glutathione concentrations and CD4 and CD8 lymphocyte counts in college students. Methods: College students (n = 177) completed standardized psychometric instruments, including the Percei

Cognitive-affective depression and somatic symptoms clusters are differentially associated with maternal parenting and coparenting.

BACKGROUND: Both depressive and somatic symptoms are significant predictors of parenting and coparenting problems. However, despite clear evidence of their co-occurrence, no study to date has examined the association between depressive-somatic symptoms clusters and parenting and coparenting. The current research sought to identify and cross-validate clusters of cognitive-affective depressive symptoms and nonspecific somatic symptoms, as well as to test whether clusters would differ on parenting and coparenting problems across three independent samples of mothers. METHOD: Participants in Studi

Early life factors initiate a 'vicious circle' of affective and gastrointestinal symptoms: A longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) have been shown to be associated with both comorbid mood disorders and traumatic events such as abuse earlier in life. In a longitudinal study, we tested a model that hypothesized: (i) childhood abuse was associated with subsequent mood disorder and pain or interference in life by bowel symptoms both directly and indirectly via neurotic personality; and (ii) an ongoing cycle of mood disorder impacts on bowel symptoms. DESIGN: Subjects from the general population classified as irritable bowel syndrome and/or functional dyspepsia (IBS/FD,

Pathways to depressive symptoms in young adults: examining affective, self-regulatory, and cognitive vulnerability factors.

Recent models of depression (e.g., from Hyde and colleagues) have integrated affective and cognitive vulnerability factors, positing that a temperamental factor (i.e., negative emotionality) contributes to the development of cognitive vulnerability factors, which in turn conveys risk for depressive symptoms. Recent literature suggests that effortful control may reduce the strength of the relationship between affective and cognitive factors. However, few studies have examined the different cognitive vulnerability factors (cognitive style, brooding, and stress-reactive rumination) through which

Sensory Processing, Dissociation, and Affective Symptoms in Misophonia: A Cross-Sectional Study of 35 Adults.

BACKGROUND Misophonia provokes intense reactions to everyday sounds and is linked to sensory and psychiatric symptoms; the role of dissociation remains unclear, so we compared these features in adults with misophonia and controls. MATERIAL AND METHODS In a cross-sectional online survey, adults aged 18-65 years (n=86) were classified into a misophonia group (n=35) and controls (n=51) using the Misophonia Questionnaire (MisoQuest; cut-off ≥7). Sensory processing was assessed with the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile (A/ASP), dissociation with the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES), and depress

Measuring affective symptoms of depression in aphasia: development of an accessible ecological momentary assessment tool.

PURPOSE: Post-stroke depression is highly prevalent in aphasia, yet existing depression measures rely heavily on language and lack sufficient validity for this population. The aim of this study was to develop an aphasia-accessible Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) of depression based on the input of people with aphasia, their care partners, and speech-language pathologists (SLPs). METHODS: Nine focus groups were conducted with people with aphasia (n = 15), care partners (n = 13), and SLPs (n = 13) to identify relevant depression symptoms. Items were selected based on factors such as endor

Effects of Glioblastoma Resection on Cognitive Function and Affective Symptoms at Three-Month Follow-Up.

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most frequent primary malignant brain tumor characterized by aggressive growth and poor prognosis, frequently accompanied by cognitive and affective deficits that severely impair quality of life (QoL). However, the short-term course of these cognitive and emotional functions after surgical resection remains insufficiently understood. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate changes in cognitive performance and affective symptoms before and 3 months after GBM resection and to explore the influence of tumor characteristics such as lateralization and location.

Affective and cognitive drivers explain current and future symptoms of problematic usage of the internet.

OBJECTIVE: Problematic usage of the internet (PUI) is a steadily growing public health issue that requires better understanding of the underlying psychological mechanisms to optimize prevention and treatment. This study aimed at investigating affective and cognitive processes that may explain symptoms of PUI cross-sectionally and longitudinally. METHODS: A comprehensive face-to-face laboratory assessment with individuals with varying types and degrees of PUI (N = 819) was conducted, including a structured diagnostic interview to measure PUI symptoms, multiple neurocognitive tasks, a cue-react

In transfusion-dependent thalassemia, neuronal damage biomarkers are associated with affective and chronic fatigue symptoms.

Patients with transfusion-dependent thalassemia (TDT) are vulnerable to neurotoxicity due to frequent blood transfusions and the subsequent iron overload (IO) and inflammation. This vulnerability may contribute to the development of depression, anxiety, and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). This case-control study aims to investigate central nervous system injury biomarkers, including neuron-specific enolase (NSE), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), neurofilament light (NFL) and nestin, neuro-immune markers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-10, calcium, magnesium

The Role of Reported Affective Symptoms and Anxiety in Recovery Trajectories After Sport-Related Concussion.

BACKGROUND: There is growing awareness and clinical interest in athletes with affective symptoms after sport-related concussion (SRC), as these symptoms may contribute to overall symptoms and represent a modifiable risk factor of longer recovery. However, evidence of their effects on the entire return-to-play (RTP) trajectory, particularly among women and men, is limited. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: To examine the relationship between affective symptom reporting and RTP progression after SRC among a cohort of Division 1 student-athletes. We hypothesized that those endorsing affective symptoms, specif

Chronic tinnitus and the limbic system: Reappraising brain structural effects of distress and affective symptoms.

Chronic tinnitus has been associated with brain structural changes in both the auditory system as well as limbic system. While there is considerable inconsistency across brain structural findings, growing evidence suggests that distress and other non-auditory symptoms modulate effects. In this study we addressed this issue, testing the hypothesis that limbic changes in tinnitus relate to both disease-related distress as well as co-morbid psychopathology. We obtained high-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans from a total of 125 subjects: 59 patients with bilateral chroni

Pubertal maturation and affective symptoms in adolescence and adulthood: Evidence from a prospective birth cohort.

The higher prevalence of affective symptoms among women compared to men emerges in adolescence, and it has been associated with pubertal maturation. However, it remains unclear whether pubertal timing has long-term influences on affective symptoms. Using data from the British 1946 birth cohort, we investigated whether pubertal timing was associated with affective symptoms over the life course, distinguishing those with symptoms in adolescence only, symptoms in adulthood only, and symptoms in both adolescence and adulthood. In females, there was no evidence that early pubertal maturation was a

Negative symptoms in schizophrenia show association with amygdala volumes and neural activation during affective processing.

OBJECTIVES: Negative symptoms in schizophrenia have been associated with structural and functional alterations of the amygdala. We hypothesised that there would be between-group differences in amygdala volume and neural activation patterns during processing of affective stimuli among patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls. We further hypothesised correlations between neuroimaging metrics and clinical ratings of negative symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: We used structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging to assess volume and neural activation of the amygdala

Altered white matter functional activity and connectivity in pretreatment breast cancer: exploratory associations with affective symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Resting-state fMRI studies in breast cancer have predominantly focused on gray matter, with limited attention to white matter functional organization. This study investigated white matter functional activity and connectivity before treatment and their associations with anxiety and depressive symptoms. METHODS: Female patients with breast cancer (BC) were recruited from Zhejiang Provincial Tongde Hospital from November 2023 to December 2025. Amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) were used to compare local white ma

Trait xenophobia is more strongly related to maladaptive beliefs and pandemic health behaviors than affective symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Xenophobia is a prevalent phenomenon with significant personal and societal consequences. As expressed by individuals, it can be influenced by psychological or psychiatric factors. Negative affect is an important aspect of xenophobia, and both negative affect and xenophobia have increased in prevalence during the COVID-19 pandemic, suggesting a potential association. We tested whether trait-like xenophobic beliefs relate to common affective symptoms, compared to other maladaptive beliefs such as conspiratorial beliefs, and, in turn, how these symptoms and beliefs relate to pandemic

Life stress influences the relationship between sex hormone fluctuation and affective symptoms in peripubertal female adolescents.

Female adolescents have a greatly increased risk of depression starting at puberty, which continues throughout the reproductive lifespan. Sex hormone fluctuation has been highlighted as a key proximal precipitating factor in the development of mood disorders tied to reproductive events; however, hormone-induced affective state change is poorly understood in the pubertal transition. The present study investigated the impact of recent stressful life events on the relationship between sex hormone change and affective symptoms in peripubertal female participants. Thirty-five peripubertal participa
