Prison health situation and health rights of young people incarcerated in sub-Saharan African prisons and detention centres: a scoping review of extant literature.

BACKGROUND: Treatment and special protection of the rights of incarcerated young people in prisons are mandated under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), as well as under United Nations (UN) human rights instruments. METHODS: A scoping review mapped what is currently known about prison conditions and health situation of detained and incarcerated young people in sub- Saharan African (SSA) prisons. A systematic search collected and reviewed all available and relevant published and grey literature. Following application of exclusion measures, 54 records remained, which represented 37 of the

Using a programmatic mapping approach to plan for HIV prevention and harm reduction interventions for people who inject drugs in three South African cities.

BACKGROUND: Stigma, criminalisation and a lack of data on drug use contribute to the "invisibility" of people who inject drugs (PWID) and make HIV prevention and treatment service delivery challenging. We aimed to confirm locations where PWID congregate in Cape Town, eThekwini and Tshwane (South Africa) and to estimate PWID population sizes within selected electoral wards in these areas to inform South Africa's first multi-site HIV prevention project for PWID. METHODS: Field workers (including PWID peers) interviewed community informants to identify suspected injecting locations in selected e

Social and Proximate Determinants of the Frequency of Condom Use Among African, Caribbean, and Other Black People in a Canadian City: Results from the BLACCH Study.

African, Caribbean, and other Black (ACB) people are a priority group for HIV prevention in Canada, but little is known about condom use in this population. This exploratory community-based research project addresses this gap in knowledge. 125 sexually active ACB people completed a questionnaire covering condom use and social determinants of health. The data were analyzed using ordinal logistic regression and mediation analyses. 20.5 % of sexually active ACB adults used condoms consistently. Male gender, wealth, unstable immigration classes, and unsecure employment statuses were independently

Technology-Based Interventions in Tobacco Use Treatment Among People Who Identify as African American/Black, Hispanic/Latina/o, and American Indian/Alaska Native: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Although tobacco use has significantly declined in the general population, traditional tobacco use treatment uptake and success rates remain disproportionately low among people who identify as African American/Black, Hispanic/Latina/o, and American Indian/Alaska Native. Technology-based interventions (TBIs) for tobacco use are promising alternatives to traditional tobacco use treatments. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to investigate the extent to which the use of digital TBIs in tobacco use treatment research promotes health equity among people who identify as African America

Current gaps in management and timely referral of cardiorenal complications among people with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the Middle East and African countries: Expert recommendations.

The upsurge of type 2 diabetes mellitus is a major public health concern in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Africa (AFR) region, with cardiorenal complications (CRCs) being the predominant cause of premature morbidity and mortality. High prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors, lack of awareness among patients and physicians, deficient infrastructure, and economic constraints lead to a cascade of CRCs at a significantly earlier age in MENA and AFR. In this review, we present consensus recommendations by experts in MENA and AFR, highlighting region-specific challenges and potenti

Linkage to care and treatment for TB and HIV among people newly diagnosed with TB or HIV-associated TB at a large, inner city South African hospital.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the outcomes of linkage to TB and HIV care and identify risk factors for poor referral outcomes. DESIGN: Cohort study of TB patients diagnosed at an urban hospital. METHODS: Linkage to care was determined by review of clinic files, national death register, and telephone contact, and classified as linked to care, delayed linkage to care (>7 days for TB treatment, >30 days for HIV care), or failed linkage to care. We performed log-binomial regression to identify patient and referral characteristics associated with poor referral outcomes. RESULTS: Among 593 TB patients, 23

Home-Based Digital Technologies to Support Aging-in-Place for Rural African American People With Alzheimer Disease and Their Care Partners: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Rural, low-income African American people have the highest Alzheimer disease and related dementia (ADRD) incidence and prevalence rates but have the least access to formal dementia care. To support individuals living with ADRD, growing evidence suggests that remote monitoring technologies can augment existing care by facilitating the completion of activities of daily living (ADLs) and maintaining communication between individuals living with ADRD and their care partners. Despite the success of remote technologies, no studies have investigated the usability, acceptability, and feasi

Technology-Based Interventions for Substance Use Treatment Among People Who Identify as African American or Black, Hispanic or Latino, and American Indian or Alaska Native: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, racial and ethnic disparities in substance use treatment outcomes are persistent, especially among underrepresented minority (URM) populations. Technology-based interventions (TBIs) for substance use treatment show promise in reducing barriers to evidence-based treatment, yet no studies have described how TBIs may impact racial or ethnic health equity. OBJECTIVE: This study explored whether TBIs in substance use treatment research promote health equity among people who identify as African American or Black, Hispanic or Latino, and American Indian or Alaska Na

Co-Designing a Digital Platform to Support a Culturally Adapted Family Intervention (CaFI:Digital) for Psychosis Among People of Sub-Saharan African and Caribbean Descent: Agile Co-Design Approach.

BACKGROUND: People of sub-Saharan African and Caribbean descent are significantly more likely to be diagnosed with psychotic disorders than other ethnic groups in the United Kingdom. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in the United Kingdom recommends family therapy as a clinically effective treatment for the management of psychosis. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence also recommends that family interventions should be culturally informed to meet the needs of an increasingly ethnically diverse population. People from minoritized backgrounds are rarely offer

Cognitive Performance, as well as Depression, Alcohol Use, and Gender, predict Anti-Retroviral Therapy Adherence in a South African Cohort of People with HIV and Comorbid Major Depressive Disorder.

Depression and cognitive impairment, which commonly coexist in people with HIV (PWH), have been identified as potential barriers to optimal antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence. We investigated associations between cognitive performance, depression (as well as other sociodemographic, psychosocial and psychiatric variables) and ART adherence in a South African cohort of PWH with comorbid major depressive disorder (MDD). Cognitive performance and ART adherence were assessed at two time points 8 months apart (Nbaseline = 105, Nfollow-up = 81). Adherence was indicated by self-report, objective m

A review on ethnic differences in plasma triglycerides and high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol: is the lipid pattern the key factor for the low coronary heart disease rate in people of African origin?

Black people in the UK, in the Caribbean, and to a lesser extent in the USA, experience coronary heart disease events at different rates than white people. Despite having higher prevalence of hypertension, cigarette smoking and diabetes, black males have significantly lower coronary heart disease rates than white males, whereas no significant differences have been detected in females. The only known risk factor differences that could account for the difference in CHD rates are higher HDL cholesterol and lower triglycerides that are seen in blacks compared with whites. Obesity and, in particula

Predictors of Treatment Adherence and Virological Failure Among People Living with HIV Receiving Antiretroviral Therapy in a South African Rural Community: A Sub-study of the ITREMA Randomised Clinical Trial.

A large proportion of people living with HIV (PLHIV) in sub-Saharan Africa reside in rural areas. Knowledge of enablers and barriers of adherence to antiretroviral treatment (ART) in these populations is limited. We conducted a cohort study of 501 adult PLHIV on ART at a rural South African treatment facility as a sub-study of a clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03357588). Socio-economic, psychosocial and behavioral characteristics were assessed as covariates of self-reported adherence difficulties, suboptimal pill count adherence and virological failure during 96 weeks of follow-up.
