Agaricus subrufescens fermented rye affects the development of intestinal microbiota, local intestinal and innate immunity in suckling-to-nursery pigs.

BACKGROUND: Agaricus subrufescens is considered as one of the most important culinary-medicinal mushrooms around the world. It has been widely suggested to be used for the development of functional food ingredients to promote human health ascribed to the various properties (e.g., anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory activities). In this context, the interest in A. subrufescens based feed ingredients as alternatives for antibiotics has also been fuelled during an era of reduced/banned antibiotics use. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a fermented feed additive -rye

gamma-L-Glutaminyl-4-hydroxybenzene, an inducer of cryptobiosis in Agaricus bisporus and a source of specific metabolic inhibitors for melanogenic cells.

A stable phenol, gamma-L-glutaminyl-4-hydroxybenzene (GHB), is oxidized by tyrosinase in the gill tissues of the mushroom Agaricus bisporus to a quinone and a second oxidation product which together suppress mitochondrial energy production and the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids in the zygote, thus establishing dormancy in the spores. Brief incubation of cultured murine L1210 leukemia and B-16 melanoma cells with muM concentrations of the purified quinone notably prolonged survival times or blocked tumor growth in histocompatible mice inoculated i.p. with high concentrations of the exp

Antifungal Activity and Possible Mechanism of Streptomyces nojiriensis 9-13 Against Mycogone sp., Causing Wet Bubble Disease on Agaricus bisporus.

Wet bubble disease (WBD) in Agaricus bisporus caused by Mycogone species imposes a substantial economic loss to mushroom production in China. Currently, fungicide application is the main method to control WBD. However, excessive use of fungicides is challenged by the appearance of resistance and food safety. Therefore, it is necessary to explore safe and efficient strategies to control WBD. Strain 9-13, isolated from the rhizosphere soil of Taxus chinensis, showed strong inhibitory activity against three Mycogone species. According to morphological and biochemical characteristics and multilocu

Polysaccharide Isolated from Agaricus blazei Murill Alleviates Intestinal Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury through Regulating Gut Microbiota and Mitigating Inflammation in Mice.

Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury is a serious disease in medical settings, and gut dysbiosis is a major contributor to its development. Polysaccharides from Agaricus blazei Murill (ABM) showed a range of pharmacological activities, yet no studies assessed the potential of ABM polysaccharides for alleviating intestinal I/R injury. Here, we purified a major polysaccharide (ABP1) from an ABM fruit body and subsequently tested its potential to mitigate intestinal I/R injury in a mouse model of temporary superior mesenteric artery occlusion. The results reveal that ABP1 pretreatment enh

Recovery of Chitin from Agaricus bisporus Mushrooms: Influence of Extraction Parameters and Supercritical CO2 Treatment on Fresh Mushrooms and Production Residues.

Chitin and chitosan, versatile biopolymers extensively used in the food and cosmetic industries, are traditionally sourced from crustaceans. However, fungi such as Agaricus bisporus mushrooms present a sustainable, non-animal alternative. This study explored the potential of different Agaricus bisporus samples, including fresh mushrooms and production residues, as sources of chitin. Given that Agaricus bisporus mushrooms are also a rich source of ergosterol, the study additionally incorporated samples treated with supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2). The effects of deproteinisation conditions

Real-time matric potential dynamics in peat casings amended with wood fibre and bark, and their relationship to Agaricus bisporus yield and quality.

Wood fibre, uncomposted bark and windrow-composted bark were tested in two replicate experiments at amendment rates of 30, 50 and 70 % v/v with commercial peat-based mushroom casing. Their performance in terms of crop yield and mushroom quality was compared to an industry standard peat-based control. Hydro-physical behaviour (i.e. matric potential) between casing treatments was monitored during the crop by recording matric potential (Ψm) using solid-state tensiometers. Emerging and developing mushrooms utilised casing-contained water resulting in decreasing Ψm during a 'flush'. Differences in
