Evaluation of genomic characteristics of Escherichia coli associated with bovine mastitis and the potential utility of alternative antimicrobial methods.

Mastitis is a disease that affects dairy cattle and can be caused by multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli, causing losses to the agricultural sector. To address this, research into new substances with antimicrobial activity is crucial. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of extracts of Commiphora leptophloeos, Amburana cearensis, Agave sisalana, and highly soluble polypyrrole (Hs-PPy) against E. coli isolates. Eight E. coli isolates from bovine mastitis and a standard strain were used. The presence of efflux pumps was investigated by ethidium bromide extrusion. Seque

Design of a Plant-Based Yogurt-Like Product Fortified with Hemp Flour: Formulation and Characterization.

Plant-based milk alternatives have gained massive popularity among consumers because of their sustainable production compared to bovine milk and because of meeting the nutritional requests of consumers affected by cow milk allergies and lactose intolerance. In this work, hemp flour, in a blend with rice flour, was used to design a novel lactose- and gluten-free yogurt-like (YL) product with suitable nutritional, functional, and sensory features. The growth and the acidification of three different lactic acid bacteria strains were monitored to better set up the biotechnological protocol for mak

Effects of hecogenin and its possible mechanism of action on experimental models of gastric ulcer in mice.

This study investigates the gastroprotective effects of hecogenin, a steroid saponin isolated from Agave sisalana, on experimental models of gastric ulcer. Male Swiss mice were used in the models of ethanol- and indometacin-induced gastric ulcer. To clarify the hecogenin mechanism of action, the roles of nitric oxide (NO), sulfhydryls (GSH), K⁺(ATP) channels and prostaglandins were also investigated, and measurements of lipid peroxidation (TBARS assay) and nitrite levels in the stomach of hecogenin-treated and untreated animals were performed. Furthermore, the effects of hecogenin on myelopero

Sulfur dioxide effects on plants exhibiting Crassulacean Acid Metabolism.

The effects of SO(2) on species exhibiting Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) were determined with short term-high concentration 'acute' greenhouse exposures (0.6 to 3.0 microl liter(-1) (ppm) SO(2) for 2 and 8 h), and long term-low concentration 'chronic' field exposures (0.35 to 0.90 microl liter(-1) SO(2) for 32 to 79 h periodically over 7 to 13 days). In the acute greenhouse exposures, visible injury was observed on Opuntia basilaris Engelm. & Bigel., exposed to 2.0 microl liter(-1) SO(2), but no injury was observed on Ananas comosus (L.) Merr., Bryophyllum blossfeldiana Poelln., Bryophyll

Genetic pre-adaptations in Saccharomyces cerevisiae Andean chicha isolates facilitate industrial brewery application.

Strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were isolated from a traditionally produced Andean maize-based chicha from Ecuador and characterised with respect to their potential use in industrial beer brewing. Whole-genome sequencing revealed that the strains were related to the 'French Guiana' and 'Mexican Agave' S. cerevisiae clades, though the available evidence indicates that they belong to a previously undescribed population, and are thus unrelated to traditional European brewing strains. Small-scale screening for wort fermentation revealed two strains with brewing potential. These outperformed co

Haemolytic activities of plant saponins and adjuvants. Effect of Periandra mediterranea saponin on the humoral response to the FML antigen of Leishmania donovani.

An 87.7% (P < 0.01) and 84% (P < 0.001) of protection against visceral leishmaniasis was achieved in CB hamsters and Balb/c mice, respectively, with saponin combined to the fucose-mannose ligand of Leishmania donovani (FML). However, an undesirable haemolytic effect was described for several saponins. Aiming to improve the formulation with FML/saponin, we comparatively analysed the haemolytic potential of recently characterized plant saponins and currently used adjuvants. The haemolytic activity of steroidic saponins from Agave sisalana; Smilax officinalis as well as commercial saponin (Riedel

Diel net CO2 exchange of carnivorous Pinguicula is consistent with low-level CAM photosynthesis.

Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) photosynthesis is a water-conserving pathway of photosynthesis that typically occurs in leaf- or stem-succulent plants of warm, water-limited habitats. Key features of CAM photosynthesis are nocturnal CO2 uptake and nocturnal increases in tissue acidity. CAM photosynthesis was recently reported in water-deficit stressed carnivorous plants of the genus Pinguicula (Lentibulariaceae). The report is remarkable because CAM has neither been documented in the Lentibulariaceae nor in a carnivorous species before. Furthermore, Pinguicula plants are vastly different in

Simple Whole-Mount Staining Protocol of F-Actin for Studies of the Female Gametophyte in Agavoideae and Other Crassinucellate Ovules.

During plant sexual reproduction, F-actin takes part in the elongation of the pollen tube and the movement of sperm cells along with it. Moreover, F-actin is involved in the transport of sperm cells throughout the embryo sac when double fertilization occurs. Different techniques for analysis of F-actin in plant cells have been developed: from classical actin-immunolocalization in fixed tissues to genetically tagged actin with fluorescent proteins for live imaging of cells. Despite the implementation of live cell imaging tools, fixed plant tissue methods for cytoskeletal studies remain an essen

Delivery mode-associated gut microbiota in the first 3 months of life in a country with high obesity rates: A descriptive study.

Delivery methods during childbirth and their related gut microbiota profiles have important impacts on health later in life, they can contribute to the development of diseases such as obesity, whose highest prevalence rate is found among the Mexican child population. Coincidentally, Mexico has one of the highest global average annual rate increase in cesarean births (C-section). Since Mexico leads the world in childhood obesity, studying the relationship between childbirth delivery methods and gut microbiota profiles in this vulnerable population may be used to identify early risk factors for

Consumer perception of sweeteners in yogurt.

Consumers are interested in products with reduced sugar, a trend which has been attributed to consumers associating high-sugar foods with obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. The objective of this study was to evaluate consumer perception of sugar reduction in yogurt-both conceptually and for liking of actual products. An online survey (n = 1,290) was conducted to evaluate consumer perception of sweeteners available in commercial yogurts. Participants who purchased yogurt at least once in the past 3 mo completed a series of exercises that involved demographics, agreement,

Leishmania donovani: assessment of leishmanicidal effects of herbal extracts obtained from plants in the visceral leishmaniasis endemic area of Bihar, India.

One obstacle faced in the effective control of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is the limited number of available treatment options. Furthermore, control efforts have been hindered further by the emergence of Leishmania resistance to many of the available drugs. In this study, we investigated the anti-leishmanial properties of 30 medicinally important plants from the VL endemic area of Bihar, India and compared them to two available anti-leishmanial drugs (sodium antimony gluconate and amphotericin B) and two plant lectins (phytohemagglutinin and concanavalin A) on Leishmania donovani promastigote

Volatile compounds flavoring obtained from Brazilian and Mexican spirit wastes by yeasts.

Vinasse is a waste obtained from the production of beverages, such as tequila and cachaça. The presence of acids, alcohols, sugars, minerals, amino acids, peptides, and nitrogen salts make vinasse a hazardous liquid waste to the environment, affecting the fauna, flora, and microbiota of rivers and lagoons. This study used biological treatment concomitant to volatile compound production. The yeasts used in the study were Saccharomyces cerevisiae (CCMA 0187 and CCMA 0188), Candida parapsilosis (CCMA 0544), and Pichia anomala (CCMA 0193). A higher percentage reduction in chemical and biochemical

Axatilimab in Recurrent or Refractory Chronic Graft-versus-Host Disease.

BACKGROUND: Colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R)-dependent monocytes and macrophages are key mediators of chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a major long-term complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation. The CSF1R-blocking antibody axatilimab has shown promising clinical activity in chronic GVHD. METHODS: In this phase 2, multinational, pivotal, randomized study, we evaluated axatilimab at three different doses in patients with recurrent or refractory chronic GVHD. Patients were randomly assigned to receive axatilimab, administered intravenously, at a dos

The evaluation of the association between the prevalence and patterns of computed tomography findings of cryptogenic organizing pneumonia, and neutrophil/lymphocyte and platelet/lymphocyte ratios.

This study presents new findings based on a large-scale analysis of butterfly genomic sequences. Focusing on species identification through comparative genomics, we define subspecies as populations differentiated to a lesser extent than distinct species ("species in the making"). Additionally, we propose further adjustments to the current butterfly classification. As a result, 3 subgenera, 12 species, and 4 subspecies are described as new. New subgenera are (type species in parenthesis): Hyalaus Grishin, subgen. n. (Papilio epidaus E. Doubleday, 1846) of Eurytides Hübner, [1821] (Papilionidae

Clinical epigenetics settings for cancer and cardiovascular diseases: real-life applications of network medicine at the bedside.

Despite impressive efforts invested in epigenetic research in the last 50 years, clinical applications are still lacking. Only a few university hospital centers currently use epigenetic biomarkers at the bedside. Moreover, the overall concept of precision medicine is not widely recognized in routine medical practice and the reductionist approach remains predominant in treating patients affected by major diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. By its' very nature, epigenetics is integrative of genetic networks. The study of epigenetic biomarkers has led to the identification of num
