Modifiable Early Childhood Risk Factors for Obesity at Age Four Years.

Background: Childhood obesity is associated with an increased risk of adult obesity and related chronic disease. Our aim was to identify modifiable exposures that are independently associated with obesity in the preschool age group. Methods: A prospective cohort study of 5734 children in New Zealand with anthropometric measurements was completed at age 4.5 years. The modifiable exposures of interest, measured at age 9 months and 2 years, were: food security during infancy; and, at age 2 years, screen time; sleep duration; and takeaway food and soft drink intake. The risk of obesity independent

Household factors and gestational age predict diet quality of pregnant women.

Adequate diet during pregnancy has positive effects on the mother and pregnancy outcome. Assessment of diet quality during pregnancy is particularly important in areas where household food security is suboptimal, to enable appropriate targeting and intervention. This study assessed diet quality and identified predicting factors among pregnant women in northern Ghana. A cross-sectional study involving 403 pregnant women was conducted in May 2018. Pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics (ANC) were selected using simple random sampling technique. We assessed socio-demographic characterist

Factors related to age at natural menopause: longitudinal analyses from SWAN.

Early age at the natural final menstrual period (FMP) or menopause has been associated with numerous health outcomes and might be a marker of future ill health. However, potentially modifiable factors affecting age at menopause have not been examined longitudinally in large, diverse populations. The Study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN) followed 3,302 initially premenopausal and early perimenopausal women from 7 US sites and 5 racial/ethnic groups, using annual data (1996-2007) and Cox proportional hazards models to assess the relation of time-invariant and time-varying sociodemogra

Factors influencing preschool-age children's acceptance of models presented as overweight.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether preschool-age children's ratings of an overweight model were influenced by perceptions of responsibility for weight, type of play activity (i.e., running or cards), and information (i.e., positive or neutral). METHODS: A total of 152 children (74 boys), aged 3 to 6 years, were randomly assigned to watch two videotapes; one presented information about the model (positive or neutral) and one depicted the model engaged in an activity (running or playing cards). RESULTS: Children who blamed models for being overweight provided lower acceptance ratings than those

Menopausal and reproductive factors and risk of age-related macular degeneration.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether estrogen exposures are associated with lower risks of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). METHODS: Postmenopausal hormone (PMH) use, past use of oral contraceptives (OCs), ages at menarche and menopause, and parity were assessed among 74,996 postmenopausal women. Over 22 years, cases of early (n = 554) and neovascular (n = 334) AMD with a visual acuity of 20/30 or worse were identified. Cox models were used to calculate the relative risk for each exposure, adjusted for smoking and other factors. RESULTS: Current PMH users had a notable 48% lower risk of

Age-related hearing impairment (ARHI): environmental risk factors and genetic prospects.

This paper reviews what is known about the environmental risk factors and medical conditions that contribute to age-related hearing impairment (ARHI), and evaluates which analyses could be performed to identify genetic factors that are involved. Although hearing acuity declines with aging in everybody, the variation in hearing thresholds is large. Part of this variation can be explained by medical conditions, and by a different exposure to environmental factors. In particular, many studies have been dedicated to the influence of occupational noise on hearing. The importance of other environmen

Association of age and reproductive factors with benign breast tissue composition.

Reproductive breast cancer risk factors are hypothesized to act by increasing exposure of the breast to endogenous estrogens, but few studies have quantitatively examined the association of these risk factors with breast tissue composition. This study is part of a case-control study of breast histological characteristics and breast cancer risk, nested within the Nurses' Health Study, a prospective study of 121,700 registered nurses. We studied 300 women who had not been diagnosed with breast cancer, but for whom we obtained slides from a prior benign breast biopsy. We used a computer-assisted

Role of redox-regulated transcription factors in inflammation, aging and age-related diseases.

A progressive rise of oxidative stress due to the altered redox homeostasis appears to be one of the hallmarks of the aging process. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) also serve as signaling agents for inflammation, a systemic defensive reaction against microbial pathogens and other foreign bodies. Changes in the pattern of gene expression through ROS-sensitive transcription factors give rise to both aging and inflammation phenotypes. Chronic oxidative stress and inflammatory reaction also lead to many age-associated diseases such as atherosclerosis and arthritis. Transcription factors that are di
