Gendered forms of intergenerational solidarity in the COVID-19 pandemic: an intersectional perspective on the public renegotiation of a moral resource for future health crises in Germany.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, 'intergenerational solidarity' became a prominent buzzword in public debates. At the same time, a resurge of ageist stereotypes could be observed that proved to be a constant structuring element in the public renegotiation of intergenerational solidarity. Despite a growing body of research indicating that the COVID-19 pandemic also had a significant impact on inequalities related to other social categories, such as gender, the interplay between appeals for intergenerational solidarity and other social inequalities in public debates has received limited

The UN Decade of healthy ageing in practice: A qualitative case study on perspectives of healthy ageing among older adults, healthcare professionals, and decision-makers in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Global populations are ageing, making healthy ageing an increasingly important priority. In Norway, the number of people aged 70 and above is expected to double by 2050. The UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030) guides Norway's national programs on healthy ageing through its four action areas: combating ageism, age-friendly environments, integrated care and long-term care. The aim of this study is to explore how healthy ageing is understood and interpreted in Norway in light of the four action areas of UN's Decade of Healthy Ageing and the enabler listening to diverse voices and

Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment to Optimize the Management of Older Patients With Transthyretin Cardiac Amyloidosis.

Transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA) predominantly affects older adults with multiple chronic conditions, leading to significant physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges. New disease-modifying drugs are effective in early stages, prompting a shift toward comprehensive assessments, including functional capacity and quality of life. However, these assessments may not fully capture the complexity of older ATTR-CA patients, especially regarding frailty and mood disorders, which can influence symptom reporting. Thus, integrating comprehensive geriatric assessment tools into routine clin

[Adult T-Cell Leukemia/Lymphoma (ATL)].

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is a distinct malignancy of CD3+/CD4+/CD8-/CD25+/CCR4+/FoxP3+ or -/TdT- Treg/Th2 cells that is etiologically associated with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-1), which is endemic in several regions in the world including southwest Japan. ATL is a rare malignancy and is a single HTLV-1-mediated disease entity with diverse molecular features. Additionally, ATL clinical features and prognosis are diverse, leading to subtype classification into acute, lymphomatous, chronic, and smoldering types according to organ involvement and LDH and calcium leve

Age and health bias in practicing clinical psychologists.

Although ageism is widely cited as a problem in mental health delivery, it is unknown whether practitioner biases are related to factors such as physical health. A randomly drawn national sample of experienced practicing doctoral-level psychologists (N = 371) responded to detailed vignettes of a client presenting with symptoms of depression, in which age (35 years or 70 years) and health (unremarkable or poor) were manipulated. Respondents completed ratings involving professional and interpersonal judgments about the hypothetical client. Results revealed some evidence for age bias, but much st

Noah Syndrome: A Review Regarding Animal Hoarding with Squalor.

The main objective of this preliminary review was to identify studies that investigated extreme forms of animal hoarding in an effort to define the concept of Noah syndrome, recently proposed as the animal variant of Diogenes syndrome. From the 52 scientific articles identified in our search, we included and analyzed 23 manuscripts. The main findings show that persons hoarding animals in squalor tend to be of advanced age and socially isolated, lacking perception of the consequences of their behavior on themselves, their families, and their animals. Neurological and psychiatric conditions, suc

Elder sexual abuse and implicit agism: examining the warm-incompetent bias among mock jurors.

Implicit ageist beliefs about the warmth and incompetence of older adults may influence jurors' perceptions and judgments of an older adult's competence in legal cases hinging on capacity and consent, including elder sexual abuse. However, little is known about the nuances of implicit agism in elder sexual abuse cases, and if it can be attenuated. The current study proposed to address these gaps via a randomized vignette design administered to a community sample of 391 US adults. Mock juror participants evaluated an elder sexual abuse case involving an older married couple, in which the victim

A scoping review of geriatric emergency medicine research transparency in diversity, equity, and inclusion reporting.

INTRODUCTION: The intersection of ageism and racism is underexplored in geriatric emergency medicine (GEM) research. METHODS: We performed a scoping review of research published between January 2016 and December 2021. We included original emergency department-based research focused on falls, delirium/dementia, medication safety, and elder abuse. We excluded manuscripts that did not include (1) original research data pertaining to the four core topics, (2) older adults, (3) subjects from the United States, and (4) for which full text publication could not be obtained. The primary objective was

A Roadmap of Noninstitutional Living Options for People with Dementia: "Don't Fence Me In".

Canadians overwhelmingly do not want to live in long-term care institutions (LTCIs) when they age; yet many end up there for lack of home care, because family care partners burn out, or because they and their professional advisors are unaware of alternatives to institutions. Not only is institutional dementia care riven with problems, it segregates disabled people, thereby abrogating human rights. Because systemic ageism and ableism cloud seniors' care, institutions remain the default option for Canadians with dementia. Yet, decades of deinstitutionalization enabled younger disabled Canadians

Successful sexual aging: A narrative review using the multidimensional theoretical paradigm of systems sexology to explore sexual health in midlife and older adults.

PURPOSE: Global population aging is shifting healthcare priorities from merely extending life to enhancing quality of life, yet sexuality remains a neglected dimension of healthy aging. Prevailing approaches focus on discrete sexual dysfunctions such as erectile dysfunction, menopause-related dyspareunia, or late-onset hypogonadism, overlooking the multidimensional and dyadic nature of sexual aging. This review reframes successful sexual aging (SSA) as a biopsychosocial process evaluated in the light of the new systems sexology, integrating decline and adaptation, and introducing the paradigm

Structural barriers and facilitators of accessing rehabilitation among adults aged 50 years and older with low back pain: a scoping review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with low back pain (LBP) experience challenges when seeking rehabilitation; a comprehensive view of structural factors to access is needed to inform rehabilitation delivery. We aimed to systematically map the experiences regarding structural barriers and facilitators to accessing rehabilitation among adults aged 50 years and older with LBP; and explore whether experiences vary by social factors. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review based on Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. Eligible studies were qualitative and mixed-method studies (qualitative component) on stru

Perspectives of staff and administrators on active aging among older inpatients: a qualitative descriptive study of an Ontario hospital.

Older adults in Canadian hospitals often experience prolonged stays, leading to high volumes of sedentary time and social isolation, both of which negatively impact recovery. This qualitative descriptive study explored how healthcare workers and hospital leadership perceive these challenges and the opportunities to address them. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 participants (12 health care workers and 6 leaders) at a mid-sized Ontario hospital, using the Social Ecological Model to guide design and analysis. Thematic analysis revealed four interrelated themes: role-related ambi

Aging in South Korea: the first penguin of the fastest aging nations.

South Korea is experiencing the world's most rapid demographic transition, having officially become a super-aged society in December 2024, with individuals aged 65 and older exceeding 20% of the total population. This shift-driven by record-low fertility rates and increasing life expectancy-presents unprecedented socioeconomic and policy challenges. This spotlight provides a critical overview of Korea's demographic shift and reviews 5 key issues related to population aging: (a) pensions and social insurance, (b) healthcare and caregiving, (c) employment and retention of older workers, (d) pove

Incarceration and the Health of Older Black Women and Men.

BACKGROUND: As more people imagine a world without prisons, we must sharpen ourunderstanding of the racialized gendered harm of carceral systems and the care needsof formerly incarcerated older Black adults, for whom harms may be particularlysevere. This study examines associations between incarceration, health, and copingresources among a nationally representative sample of older Black women and men. METHODS: Data are from the 2012 and 2014 waves of the Health and Retirement Study.Using logistic regression, we examined whether the odds of having high levels ofcoping resources or experiencing

Safe Enough to Thrive: A Dignity of Risk Framework for Older Adult Mental Health Care.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with psychiatric disorders and/or neurocognitive impairment are often cared for in restrictive settings such as long-term care facilities and inpatient psychiatric hospitals. Risk-averse institutional cultures can lead to overly restrictive practices that prioritize safety at the expense of autonomy and dignity. OBJECTIVE: To develop a geropsychology-informed dignity of risk framework that helps clinicians and teams balance safety and autonomy in geriatric mental health care. METHODS: This conceptual paper integrates psychological, gerontological, and philosophical l

The indignities of shielding during the COVID-19 pandemic for people with sickle cell disorders: an interpretative phenomenological analysis.

This article seeks to understand the first-hand experiences of people with sickle cell, a recessively inherited blood disorder, who were identified as clinically extremely vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Part of a larger sequential mixed-methods study, this article uses a selective sample of eight qualitative semi-structured interviews, which were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The first stage of IPA focused on practical concerns participants had correlated to understanding shielding and their feelings about being identified as clinically extremely vuln

A concept evolution inspired by Delphi: The quest for a fair and dignified model for ageing in prison.

As prison populations age, correctional systems face mounting challenges in meeting the complex needs of older people in custody. This study co-produced a conceptual model for prison-based aged care through a Delphi-inspired, multi-stakeholder process. Building on a prior systematic review, we proposed a baseline model comprising three foundational pillars - People (relational care), Purpose (meaning), and Place (safe environment). Through five iterative focus group discussions with a total of 17 participants involving family members, aged care professionals, advocates, and mental health worke

Increasing Participation of Women in Cardiovascular Trials: JACC Council Perspectives.

Although some progress has been made in the last 3 decades to increase the number of women in clinical cardiology trials, review of recent cardiovascular literature demonstrates that women and underrepresented minority women are still underrepresented in most clinical cardiology trials. This is especially notable in trials of patients with coronary artery disease, heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, and arrhythmia studies, especially those involving devices and procedures. Despite the call from National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration, Institute of Medicine, and va
