Compliance with supportive periodontal therapy among patients with aggressive and chronic periodontitis.

Compliance with supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) depends on many factors but is generally poor. We compared SPT compliance among patients with aggressive and chronic periodontitis. This single-center longitudinal observational study enrolled 101 patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAP; n = 52) or generalized chronic periodontitis (GCP; n = 49) to compare SPT compliance. All participants were studied for 1 year before the close of data collection. Compliance was classified as complete (100% of programmed visits), erratic (≥50% of programmed visits), or noncompliant (<50% of

Periodontal treatment reduces matrix metalloproteinase levels in localized aggressive periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of host-derived proteinases reported to mediate multiple functions associated with periodontal breakdown and inflammation. High MMP levels in African-American children with localized aggressive periodontitis (LAgP) have been reported previously by the present authors. However, little is known about MMP reductions in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) after therapy. This study aims to evaluate MMP levels in the GCF after treatment of LAgP and to correlate these levels with clinical response. METHODS: GCF samples were collected from 29 Afri

Subgingival microbiota of periodontally untreated Mexican subjects with generalized aggressive periodontitis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Specific microbial profiles that may distinguish between generalized aggressive-periodontitis (GAgP) and generalized chronic-periodontitis (GCP) have, to date, not been described. The purpose of the present study was to describe the subgingival microbial composition of Mexican subjects with GAgP and compare it with that of individuals with GCP and periodontal health (PH). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-seven subjects with GAgP (n=19), GCP (n=39) and PH (n=19) were selected. Clinical measurements included plaque accumulation, gingival erythema, bleeding on probing, suppurati

Suppuration-associated bacteria in patients with chronic and aggressive periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Suppuration (SUP) on probing may be an indication of active periodontal breakdown. The aim of the present study is to analyze which subgingival species are associated with SUP in patients with chronic (CP) and aggressive (AgP) periodontitis. METHODS: A total of 156 patients with CP and 66 with AgP were submitted to full-mouth periodontal examination and subgingival biofilm sampling (14 sites/patient). The counts of 44 bacterial species were determined by checkerboard. Comparisons between groups and sites were analyzed by the Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon tests, respectively. Associati

Evaluation of serum ceruloplasmin in aggressive and chronic periodontitis patients.

BACKGROUND: Pro-inflammatory markers are seen to increase in inflammatory diseases like periodontitis. Detecting an increase in these markers is one of the diagnostic modality. One such marker, which can be detected, is the ceruloplasmin. Ceruloplasmin induces hypoxia and generates oxygen radicals at the site of aggressive periodontitis. It also causes a state of hypoferremia leading to increase in the natural resistance of the body. The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum levels of cerruloplasmin in both aggressive and chronic periodontitis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Blood samp

Comparative biology of chronic and aggressive periodontitis vs. peri-implantitis.

This review was undertaken to address the similarities and dissimilarities between the two disease entities of periodontitis and peri-implantitis. The overall analysis of the literature on the etiology and pathogenesis of periodontitis and peri-implantitis provided an impression that these two diseases have more similarities than differences. First, the initiation of the two diseases is dependent on the presence of a biofilm containing pathogens. While the microbiota associated with periodontitis is rich in gram-negative bacteria, a similar composition has been identified in peri-implant disea

Local delivery of chlorhexidine gluconate in patients with aggressive periodontitis.

The aim of this randomized, controlled, single-blinded trial was to evaluate the effectiveness of a biodegradable chlorhexidine chip as an adjunctive therapy to scaling and root planing. Eleven consecutive patients with aggressive periodontitis were recruited for this study. Each volunteer provided four sites with probing depth > or = 5 mm. Two sites received scaling and root planing (SRP) and placement of the chlorhexidine chip (PC), and the other two sites received scaling and root planing only. The clinical outcomes were measured at baseline, 6 weeks and 3 months after treatment. All patien

Generalized aggressive periodontitis in a prepubertal patient: a case report.

A 10-year-old boy presented with generalized gingival inflammation, extensive alveolar bone loss, and tooth mobility. Clinical and radiographic examination supplemented by microbiologic investigation led to a diagnosis of classically termed prepubertal periodontitis (now known as generalized aggressive periodontitis). Other than severe periodontitis, the child was systemically healthy. Neither unusual infections nor abnormalities in neutrophil functions were detected. Microbiologic examinations by culture revealed the presence of the periodontal pathogen Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans. T

Management of localized aggressive periodontitis: A 30-year follow-up.

This case report describes the long-term follow-up of a patient with localized aggressive periodontitis over a 30-year period. A 16-year-old woman was referred for periodontal assessment after starting orthodontic treatment. The patient was treated initially by combined nonsurgical and antimicrobial therapy, and autotransplantation of maxillary third molars in place of maxillary first molars, followed by a regular supportive periodontal treatment program. This challenging case demonstrated that elimination of putative bacterial pathogens and long-term supportive periodontal treatments provide

Presentation of Localized Aggressive Periodontitis in Monozygotic Twins: Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Localized aggressive periodontal disease is an uncommon finding observed in adolescents and children. Studies have been conducted to elucidate the etiology, contributing factors, and genetic roles in the phenomena. In particular, twin studies have shown genetic makeup to be a substantial risk factor for periodontitis. This case is, to the best of the authors' knowledge, the first to be presented in literature of a same dwelling, set of monozygotic twins, displaying similar presentation of localized aggressive periodontitis, however with different microbial profiles.
