A serological survey of Brucella antibodies was carried out in Jigawa State, northwestern Nigeria to determine the prevalence of the disease and risk factors among some pastoralist cattle herds. A total of 570 cattle of different ages and sexes selected from 20 herds across the four agroecological zones in the state were screened using Rose Bengal Plate test and competitive enzyme immunoassay. From the results 23 cattle (4.04%) were positive by Rose Bengal Plate Test while 22(3.86%) were positive with competitive enzyme immunoassay. The infection rate was higher in females than males. Cattle o

Predatory insects such as ladybirds, green lacewings, and an aphid midge have been commercialized and deployed worldwide to deal with the challenge of pest control. However, limited information is available on their associated viruses. To start filling this gap, this study employed an integrative bioinformatics approach with 21 publicly available RNA-seq libraries, from six countries, of eight natural enemy species used to control aphids. A total of 41 putative novel viruses were identified and classified into 16 families and 1 genus. In addition, 13 known viruses were detected, including aphi

The YopJ group of acetylating effectors from phytopathogens of the genera Pseudomonas and Ralstonia have been widely studied to understand how they modify and suppress their host defence targets. In contrast, studies on a related group of effectors, the Eop1 group, lag far behind. Members of the Eop1 group are widely present in the Erwinia-Pantoea clade of Gram-negative bacteria, which contains phytopathogens, non-pathogens and potential biocontrol agents, implying that they may play an important role in agroecological or pathological adaptations. The lack of research in this group of YopJ eff

Two recent literature reviews have shown that: i) agroecological crop protection (ACP) practices generally reduce risks of viral zoonoses, unlike conventional (agrochemical-based) practices which tend to increase them; ii) substitution-based crop protection (CP) practices (mainly biocontrol-based) could result in fewer health risks from bacterial infectious diseases. Here, we present an analysis of the scientific literature to determine to what extent the conclusions regarding viruses or bacteria can be extended to infectious diseases caused by protozoan or helminthic parasites. This analysis

Ixodid ticks are important arthropods in medicine and veterinary science, posing a considerable threat to livestock in East Africa. A repeated cross-sectional study was conducted from March 2022 to June 2023 to explore the spatial distribution, prevalence, species diversity and burden of cattle ticks, and to investigate risk factors associated with tick infestation prevalence and burden in northwest Ethiopia. A total of 2528 cattle were randomly selected through multistage cluster sampling for tick inspection across 18 districts during both dry and wet seasons. Ticks samples were identified mo

There is always controversy regarding identification of different species in the genus Eurytrema. Identification has been based mainly on morphology, which can be misleading and subject to differing interpretation among the scientists. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify Eurytrema flukes both by morphology and molecular properties on the basis of 18-subunit ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) gene as well as internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) to clarify their phylogenetic status. Among six different agroecological areas of Bangladesh, 22 Eurytrema flukes were recovered from the bile ducts

Paslahepevirus balayani (Hepatitis E virus, HEV) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen with a wide host range, yet its circulation in African equids remains poorly understood. This study provides the first serological investigation of HEV in donkeys in Algeria, aiming to assess exposure levels and identify potential infection-related risk factors. Between 2019 and 2024, 183 donkeys were sampled across three northeastern provinces (Mila, Souk-Ahras, and Tébessa), representing diverse agroecological conditions and including both working donkeys and animals used in cross-border smuggling. Individual d

Land-use changes in West Africa are threatening wildlife viability, yet their impacts on species' genetic diversity and connectivity remain poorly understood. We investigated the environmental drivers of genetic diversity and functional connectivity in the Near Threatened Guinea baboon (Papio papio) by genotyping 243 non-invasively collected faecal samples across its range and applying a landscape genetics framework. We identified distinct genetic clusters, with Gambian populations exhibiting the lowest genetic diversity and highest inbreeding. Genetic diversity was positively associated with

In the rice agroecosystems of Southeast Asia, rice root knot nematode (Meloidogyne graminicola) significantly impairs yield, representing a major species within the 'graminis-group' known for its morphological similarities with other root knot nematodes (RKNs). This study delves into the variations in reproductive potential, morphology, morphometrics, and genetic diversity among thirty RKN populations in rice across three distinct agroecological zones in Jharkhand, India. Despite notable differences in reproductive potential among the populations, morphological and morphometric correlations to

In recent years, the sustainable development of agricultural water resources has received much attention. The mismatch between agricultural water distribution patterns, land resources, and socioeconomics threatens food production, especially in vast water-scarce plains. Therefore, monitoring agricultural water spatial equilibrium (AWRSE) is necessary. Based on equilibrium theory and information entropy, in this study, the AWRSE evaluation model is constructed from three aspects: agricultural water resources, land resources, and socioeconomics. In addition, the relationship between social facto

Defining the genetic basis of local adaptation is a key goal of evolutionary biology and crop improvement. Theory predicts that when selective pressures follow differences in the environment, a cline will be established. Clines can be exploited to uncover adaptive variation by association of alleles with the environment. However, monotonic phenotypic change over a cline is not necessarily mirrored in the behavior of genetic variants and population structure can further complicate analysis. To study genetic and phenotypic variation across the environment, we developed a multi-parent advanced ge

The growing demand for food and its safety are a challenge for agriculture and agrifood. This has led to the incorporation of alternatives such as organic agriculture, the use of biocontrollers, the development of transgenic plants resistant to pathogens and the incorporation of nanotechnology. In this sense, agrochemicals based on nanoparticles (NPs) have been developed. Recently, the green synthesis of NPs has grown rapidly and, for this reason, molecules, microorganisms, fungi and plants are used. Synthesis from plant extracts offers a broad spectrum and, despite the fact that NPs are usual

Flood risks continue to pose serious threats to developing countries with dire ramifications for livelihoods. Yet, contemporary research on determinants for coping with flood hazards is driven mostly by individual cases with less effort to systematically identify coping strategies across multiple floods. This research analyses potential determinants of coping strategies to flooding across multiple floods using two case studies in Cameroon. Via empirical research and qualitative or descriptive statistical analysis, the research investigated how human, social, and economic or financial variables

In response to increased pest and disease problems, potato farmers use pesticides, which could raise environmental and health concerns. This study sought to promote proper and safe pesticide-handling practices by providing data needed to guide pesticide regulation policy and training for extension staff and farmers. A household survey was conducted in three major potato-growing agroecological zones of Uganda. Two hundred and four potato farmers were interviewed about the type and source of pesticides they use in potato cultivation, the frequency of applications, the use of protective clothing,

The most important tick-borne disease of cattle in eastern, central and southern Africa is East Coast fever (ECF) caused by Theileria parva and transmitted by the tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus. Other less-important tick-borne diseases in cattle are benign theileriosis caused by Theileria mutans, babesiosis caused by Babesia bigemina, anaplasmosis caused by Anaplasma marginale and cowdriosis caused by Cowdria ruminatum. In Murang's District, Central Province of Kenya, five agroecological zones (AEZs) are defined according to climate, altitude and agricultural activities. A cross-sectional s

Little work has been done on diseases of horses in Ethiopia or tropical regions of the world. Yet, Ethiopia has the largest horse population in Africa and their horses play a pivotal role in their economy as traction animals. A serological and questionnaire survey was therefore conducted to determine the circulating serovars of Leptospira and their association with potential risk factors in the cart horse population of Central and Southern Ethiopia. A total of 184 out of 418 cart horses from 13 districts had antibody titres of 1:100 or greater to at least one of 16 serovars of Leptospira speci
