Background: Unanticipated difficult airways remain a leading cause of anesthesia-related morbidity and mortality, with traditional bedside predictors demonstrating limited sensitivity. Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) has emerged as a non-invasive adjunct offering real-time visualization and quantitative measurement of airway anatomy. This narrative review, structured according to the Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles (SANRA), synthesizes current evidence on POCUS as an adjunct for airway evaluation. We explore the sonoanatomy of the upper airway, the utility of ultrasound

INTRODUCTION: Airway management is one of the most important interventions performed by paramedics in the prehospital setting. While the standard of care for over 40 years, multiple studies highlight pitfalls associated with prehospital airway management in adults. Considerably less research describes prehospital airway management in children.
AREAS COVERED: We searched PubMed for articles from 2000 to present using the keywords 'children,' 'airway management,' 'intubation intratracheal,' 'Emergency Medical Services,' and 'paramedic.' Studies highlight the pitfalls of adult prehospital endotr

Airway stenosis (AS) is a fibroinflammatory disease characterized by abnormal activation of fibroblasts and excessive synthesis of extracellular matrix, which has puzzled many doctors despite its relatively low prevalence. Traditional treatment such as endoscopic surgery, open surgery, and adjuvant therapy have many disadvantages and are limited in the treatment of patients with recurrent AS. Therefore, it is urgent to reveal the pathogenesis of AS and accelerate its clinical transformation. Based on the discovered pathogenesis, including fibrosis, inflammation, epithelial-mesenchymal transiti

BACKGROUND: Airway management is a critical component of prehospital and emergency care, often complicated by the environment in which it is performed. Confined space airway management (CSAM) refers to scenarios were restricted physical space challenges conventional airway techniques. These situations may occur in unpredictable environments, such as vehicle entrapments or collapsed structures, and controlled settings like helicopters. This narrative review aims to synthesize current knowledge, expert opinions, and evidence on CSAM.
MAIN BODY: CSAM poses logistical and technical challenges, in

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac arrest is the loss of systemic circulation. The approach to airway management is an important component of the resuscitation of patients in cardiac arrest.
OBJECTIVE: This paper evaluates key evidence-based updates concerning airway management in cardiac arrest.
DISCUSSION: Management of cardiac arrest focuses on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including high-quality chest compressions and ventilation. Resuscitation should prioritize circulation with high-quality compressions, but as the resuscitation continues, airway management is necessary to provide ventilation

Up to 30% of lung cancer patients suffer from central airway obstruction, resulting in major deterioration in prognosis and quality of life. Interventional bronchoscopy combines a number of invasive techniques used during rigid bronchoscopy. It is designed to rapidly improve symptoms, primarily dyspnea. Applied according to very precise indications, this technique requires careful patient selection and needs to be incorporated into the multimodal oncological management in combination with systemic treatments, radiation therapy and surgery.

Nasotracheal intubation is used as a basic method for airway management, along with orotracheal intubation under anesthesia and intensive care. It has become an effective alternative method to orotracheal intubation with increased benefits of offering better mobility and surgical field in oral and maxillofacial surgery and possibly in trauma and critically ill patients. Nasotracheal intubation is performed through a relatively narrow nasal cavity; therefore, additional precautions are needed. Accordingly, nasotracheal intubation methods have evolved over the years with accumulated clinical exp

Airway management is the cornerstone to resuscitation efforts for many critically ill pediatric patients presenting for emergency care. Pediatric endotracheal intubation is uncommon in emergency medicine, making it challenging to maintain comfort with this critical procedure. This article offers strategies to facilitate pediatric airway management by addressing predictable anatomic and physiologic differences in children. Also reviewed are alternative approaches to airway management (eg, noninvasive ventilation and videolaryngoscopy) that might be used in cases of recognized difficult airways.

This article presents an overview of the diagnosis and management of airway problems encountered in infants with severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Respiratory failure in premature infants develops as a result of parenchymal and airway diseases. The survival of increasingly premature infants and the ventilatory support required by premature lungs may result in airway disease. The management of respiratory failure depends on whether it is primarily caused by parenchymal versus airway diseases. Continuous airway pressure early in the neonatal period has favorably changed the incidence of B

BACKGROUND: Supraglottic jet ventilation (SJV) via the "jet endotracheal tube" (JET) designed by Wei (WEI JET; Wei Medical LLC, Cherry Hill, NJ) provides adequate oxygenation and ventilation during direct laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation in animals. It has facilitated intubation in apneic pigs with a simulated difficult airway.
OBJECTIVE: To report on the first clinical study to examine the efficacy of using SJV via the WEI JET, in combination with end-tidal CO(2) pressure (PetCO(2)) monitoring during SJV, in maintaining oxygenation during direct laryngoscopy, and in facilitating placemen

OBJECTIVE: Primary major airway tumors are rare. A retrospective analysis of referral centers experience could be helpful for their management.
METHODS: Fifty-one patients, including 44 (86%) malignant and seven (14%) benign with primary tumors of subglottis, trachea, carina, and main stem bronchi, were managed in a 14-year period. Based on computed tomography (CT) scan and rigid bronchoscopy findings, those who evaluated as resectable underwent airway resection and reconstruction. The others were managed by one or a combination of these methods: core out, laser, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, a

PURPOSE: Mandibular retrognathia may cause upper airway obstruction in the pediatric patient due to tongue collapse and physical obstruction in the hypopharyngeal region. Mandibular distraction osteogenesis (DO) may be a useful treatment option to avoid tracheostomy. This study reviews 35 patients who underwent DO as treatment for concomitant jaw discrepancy and corrective airway management.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-five consecutive patients, 20 male and 15 female, with airway obstruction were evaluated retrospectively using clinic and hospital records. The mean age was 3.5 months (range,

Airway management is a skill that all healthcare professionals need to learn. This skill is used in two specific areas. First, in emergency situations such as cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest. Second, and the subject of this article, the postanaesthetic patient. This article explores not only the anatomy of the respiratory system but the different techniques and methods employed to manage a patient's airway. Airway management can be divided into three distinct phases. The first phase deals with the management of the airway while the patient undergoes an operation; this is managed by the an

Craniofacial anomalies (CFA) predispose children to airway obstruction. A retrospective study was conducted to describe airway intervention required to manage patients with craniofacial syndromes and diseases involving the midface and mandible (i.e., Pierre Robin, Apert, Treacher Collins, Saethre-Chotzen, CHARGE, Nager, Stickler, Goldenhar, and Pfeiffer). The type of airway intervention, duration of intervention, and associated physical and medical conditions were evaluated. One hundred nine patients had charts available for review and met inclusion criteria. Sixty-five of these patients requi
