Molecular characterization of wild-type polioviruses isolated in Greece during the 1996 outbreak in Albania.

During the present study three type 1 poliovirus strains isolated in Greece during the 1996 poliomyelitis outbreak in Albania were retrospectively investigated and determination of their relationship with other epidemic strains isolated in Albania or elsewhere during previous epidemics was attempted. SimPlot analysis revealed that the three Greek strains are the result of a recombination event in the VP2 coding region.

Ultrasound-based population survey for abdominal cystic echinococcosis in Albania: Results from the NDTND project.

BACKGROUND: Albania is considered endemic for cystic echinococcosis (CE). Recent data on prevalence and incidence of CE in Europe suggests that the Balkan region is the epicentre of this neglected parasitic disease in Europe. In Albania, a retrospective study has estimated a mean incidence of 1.49 cases/100,000 people. We aimed to assess the prevalence of CE in eight municipalities across the country. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We enrolled participants aged >5 years in an ultrasound (US)-based screening for CE in 23 villages in eight municipalities from three prefectures. Participants we

Econometric assessment of seasonal volatility and predictive uncertainty in Albania's hydropower-dependent electricity market.

The Albanian energy sector is highly reliant on hydropower, making the national energy balance vulnerable to seasonal variability and hydrological shocks. This study analyzes quarterly electricity production data for 2012Q1-2025Q3 using Seasonal-Trend decomposition via Loess (STL) and Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) modelling. STL is used to isolate trend and seasonal strength, while a SARIMA(0,1,2)(0,1,1)4 model is estimated to generate production forecasts for the 2025Q4-2030Q4 horizon (Q = calendar quarter). Results confirm a dominant seasonal component (FS = 0.63

Travel-associated cutaneous larva migrans: Clinical recognition and management of an imported case in Albania.

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a parasitic skin infestation typically caused by animal hookworm larvae, most often Ancylostoma braziliense and Ancylostoma caninum. The disease is an erythematous, serpiginous, pruritic, cutaneous eruption caused by accidental percutaneous penetration and subsequent migration of larvae. It is commonly reported in tropical or subtropical regions but may appear elsewhere through international travel. We describe the case of a female traveller who developed a serpiginous, pruritic lesion on her foot after exposure to river water while visiting Oman. The diagnosis

Anthrax in Albania: A Comprehensive Analysis of Epidemiology, Laboratory Diagnosis, and National Control Strategies in Animals.

Anthrax is one of the most significant zoonotic diseases in Albania due to its endemic presence in livestock, the potential for occupational exposure, and human cases. Although the implementation of risk-based livestock immunization, animal movement restrictions, and appropriate carcass disposal, the efficacy of targeted management remains limited in certain outbreaks due to insufficient enforcement of these measures. Their efficacy is specifically diminished by insufficient disinfection, the absence of grazing bans in contaminated pastures, and the absence of designated burial sites for the s

Parental concerns, behaviours, and attitudes associated with childhood vaccinations in Albania: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy (VH) is an increasing global concern, contributing to vaccine preventable disease outbreaks in the last decade. Over the past decade, Albania has experienced a rise in VH, with childhood immunisation coverage decreasing from 94% in 2008-2009 to 75% in 2017-2018. In 2023, World Health Organization (WHO) reported a suboptimal 83% coverage for the first dose of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine in Albania. This study aims to identify the most hesitated and refused childhood vaccines and to assess the most frequently reported parental concerns, behaviours, and a

The Presence of Some Minor Aspergillus and Penicillium Unregulated Mycotoxins in Main Cereals Cultivated in Albania.

(1) Background: Food and feed safety legislation does not concern all the mycotoxins generated by Penicillium and Aspergillus spp. Certain mycotoxins, including mycophenolic acid (MPA), cyclopiazonic acid (CPA), penicillic acid (PA), roquefortine C (ROQ C), and gliotoxin (GLI), are regarded as having lower toxicity levels, and hence are not included in food and feed legislation. It is obvious that xenobiotics, including mycotoxins, exert synergistic harmful health effects on human and animal when exposed through food and feed. (2) Methods: The presence of these substances in maize and wheat gr

The seroprevalence of brucellosis and molecular characterization of Brucella species circulating in the beef cattle herds in Albania.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a ubiquitous zoonotic disease globally. It is endemic among bovines, sheep, and goats in Albania. The national control and eradication programs for brucellosis has been applied on sheep and goat farms as well as large dairy cattle farms, i.e., those with more than ten milking cows. The current study aims at estimating the herd and average individual animal prevalence of brucellosis in the national beef cattle herds, the missing information that was essential to propose the most appropriate control measures for this sub-population. Detection of Babesia canis subspecies and other arthropod-borne diseases in dogs from Tirana, Albania.

Summary. The importance of arthropod-borne diseases increased in the recent past in particular due to frequent travel with dogs in or by importing of dogs from regions with endemic occurrence of these diseases. While the epidemiological situation is well known for the western parts of the Mediterranean, only limited data is available for Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Thirty clinically healthy dogs from suburban areas of Tirana, Albania, were tested for Babesia canis, Hepatozoon spp., Leishmania spp., Dirofilaria spp., Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Bartonella spp. and Rickettsia

Surveillance of suspected poliomyelitis in Albania, 1980-1995: suggestion of increased risk of vaccine associated poliomyelitis.

Surveillance of suspected poliomyelitis cases was conducted in Albania from 1980 through 1995. A total of 93 cases were reported, 11 of which were clinically defined as poliomyelitis cases according to WHO criteria. Poliovirus was isolated from six subjects who were defined as contact vaccine-associated cases. Characterization of isolates by both antigenic and molecular methods showed that, in all cases, the disease was associated with type 2 or 3 polioviruses of vaccine origin with retromutations known to be associated with loss of Sabin attenuated phenotype. Infection occurred despite the fa

From marginalization to transformation: Examining structural injustices and policy impacts on Albania's Roma and Egyptian communities.

This study explores the role of conflict, suffering, and structural injustices in driving transformative processes within Albania's Roma and Egyptian communities, emphasizing how these experiences challenge consensus-driven approaches to social change. By analyzing systemic inequalities and power struggles through critical theory frameworks, the study highlights the importance of addressing conflict as a catalyst for transformation in the face of global challenges like climate change and the Capitalocene. The research draws on policy reviews and academic literature to examine the intersection

Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of the Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) in Albania Revealed by Microsatellite Markers.

Understanding genetic diversity and population structure is essential for the sustainable management of freshwater fish, particularly in systems influenced by long-term stocking. In this context, the genetic status of Albanian common carp (Cyprinus carpio) remains poorly understood. Here, 125 individuals from five populations representing natural lakes (Ohrid and Shkodra), semi-managed freshwater systems (Prespa and Belshi), and a hatchery stock (Tapiza) were genotyped at 12 polymorphic microsatellite loci. High genetic diversity was detected across all populations, with low genetic differenti
