BACKGROUND: Xerophthalmia refers to the ocular manifestations associated with vitamin A deficiency. Vitamin A deficiency can be caused by numerous disorders, including alcohol-induced malnutrition. The ocular manifestations of xerophthalmia include conjunctival and corneal xerosis (drying), keratomalacia (corneal necrosis/ulceration), nyctalopia (night blindness), and Bitot's spots (conjunctival lesions).
CASE REPORT: A 47-year-old white male with complaints of dryness and difficulty seeing at night presented to our clinic for consultation from general medicine to rule out xerophthalmia. Labo

Alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) refers to a spectrum of hepatic damage triggered by excessive alcohol intake, resulting in inflamed and swollen livers, ultimately, liver cirrhosis. Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a similar term denoting liver disorders encompassing steatosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Recent evidence has suggested a vital role for epigenetic factors, which modulate gene expression in the absence of changes in DNA sequence, in the onset and progression of liver disorders, to foster hepatic fibrogenesis and cirrhosis. Mounting findings have delineated that a

Alcohol is one of the most socially accepted addictive drugs in modern society. Its abuse affects virtually all organ systems with the central nervous system (CNS) being particularly vulnerable to excessive alcohol exposure. Alcohol exposure also causes profound damage to both the adult and developing brain. Excessive alcohol consumption induces numerous pathophysiological stress responses, one of which is the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response. Potential mechanisms that trigger the alcohol induced ER stress response are either directly or indirectly related to alcohol metabolism, whic

Chronic alcohol drinking has been associated with the development of a number of abnormalities, including neuron-behavioral disorders, liver, pancreas, and heart-related diseases and inflammation and immune disorders. Because diverse mechanisms are involved in the development of these disorders, the commonly used receptor- or enzyme-specific drugs do not provide comprehensive protection against the adverse effects of alcoholism. This study describes possible therapeutic potency of puerarin (PU) from kudzu root, polyenylphosphatidylcholine from soy (SPCh), and curcumin (CU) from turmeric agains

Maternal alcohol exposure during pregnancy can substantially impact the development of the fetus, causing a range of symptoms, known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs), such as cognitive dysfunction and psychiatric disorders, with the pathophysiology and mechanisms largely unknown. Recently developed human cerebral organoids from induced pluripotent stem cells are similar to fetal brains in the aspects of development and structure. These models allow more relevant in vitro systems to be developed for studying FASDs than animal models. Modeling binge drinking using human cerebral organ

Manifestations of anxiety, including panic disorder, are more common in the alcoholic population than in the general population. Alcoholics frequently abuse other drugs. The authors hypothesized that alcoholic subjects with panic attacks would abuse anxiolytic drugs more and panic-inducing drugs less frequently than nonanxious alcoholic subjects, and that their abuse of panic-inducing drugs would predate the age at panic onset. Findings indicate that alcoholic subjects with panic attacks (but not panic disorder) abused opiates and sedatives to a greater degree than nonanxious alcoholic subject

(1) Circadian clocks have been localized to discrete sites within the nervous system of several organisms and in mammals to the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the anterior hypothalamus. The SCN controls and regulates the production and discharge of melatonin (hormonal message of darkness) from the pineal gland via a multisynaptic efferent pathway. The nocturnal rise in melatonin production from serotonin results due to an increased activity of serotonin N-acetyl transferase (NAT). (2) The complex interaction between alcohol and biological clock need to be understood as alcoholism results in

Alcohol consumption and abuse can have a variety of cutaneous manifestations. In addition to the well-recognized stigmata of the chronic alcoholic patient, even early abuse can result in distinctive skin changes or exacerbate existing cutaneous disorders. An accurate history of alcohol intake will facilitate recognition of these alcohol-induced cutaneous disorders and treatment resistance of dermatoses such as psoriasis as well as help decrease morbidity in surgical procedures. Familiarization with the spectrum of cutaneous manifestations of alcohol abuse and alcoholic liver disease can also a

Hand disinfection with alcohols-based hand rubs (ABHRs) are known to be the most effective measure to prevent nosocomial infections in healthcare. ABHRs contain on average 70% by weight of one or more alcohols. During the hand rubbing procedure, users are exposed to these alcohols not only through dermal contact, but also via inhalation, due to the physical and chemical properties of alcohols volatilizing from alcoholic solutions or gels into the air. Ethanol ingestion is well known to increase risks of several diseases (affecting the pancreas, liver, cardiovascular system…), but there is a la

Alcohol is one of the most common noxious substance to which fetuses are exposed. The aim of the study was to determine the effects of in utero alcohol exposure on excitotoxin-induced neuronal migration disorders. Female hamsters received alcohol (7%) for 3-5 mo or for the last 9-12 d of gestation. Alcohol diet was continued for 5 d during lactation in both groups. Drinking behavior was monitored. Peak plasma alcohol levels were 104+/-12 mg/dL and 225+/-6 mg/dL after 30 min for hamsters receiving an intragastric dose of 3 mL or 5 mL alcohol, respectively. At birth, pups received intrapallial i

BACKGROUND: Alcohol abuse during pregnancy often induces neuropsychological problems in the offspring, including learning disorders, attention deficits, and behavior problems, all of which are prominent components of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). However, not all children who were exposed to alcohol in utero are equally affected by it. While some children have major deficits, others are spared. This unequal vulnerability is likely due largely to differences in fetal genetics. Some fetuses appear to have certain genotypes that make them much more prone to FASD. However, to date, no g

Aggregate reporting obscures substantial heterogeneity in alcohol-induced mortality among Asian Americans. Using CDC WONDER Multiple Cause of Death data (2018-2022), we examined alcohol-induced deaths across non-Hispanic Asian American subgroups by cause, age, sex, and year, with Bonferroni correction applied. Asian Indians showed the highest proportional mortality for Other Alcohol-Induced Causes (2.50%), for mental and behavioral disorders due to alcohol (1.12%), and among adults aged 15-34 years (8.47%), the only measure exceeding the corresponding U.S. rate. Male-to-female ratios were high

Primary alcoholics may display symptoms of affective or psychotic disorders, while mentally ill patients may develop persistent alcohol-related problems. The author discusses the importance of distinguishing alcoholic psychosis from schizophrenia and alcohol-induced confusion from organic brain syndrome. He then outlines the diagnosis and treatment of other alcohol-induced conditions such as alcoholic dementia, antisocial behavior, and drug abuse. After stressing that primary alcoholism can mimic almost any psychiatric disorder, and secondary alcohol abuse can exacerbate any psychiatric sympto

Compared with men, at-risk alcohol use by women has a disproportionate effect on their health and lives, including reproductive function and pregnancy outcomes. Obstetrician–gynecologists have a key role in screening and providing brief intervention, patient education, and treatment referral for their patients who drink alcohol at risk levels. For women who are not physically addicted to alcohol, tools such as brief intervention and motivational interviewing can be used effectively by the clinician and incorporated into an office visit. For pregnant women and those at risk of pregnancy, it is

We report a case of severe ethanol intoxications in a 14-year-old boy whose starting blood alcohol concentration was 490 mg/dL. The intoxication led to coma with hypoventilation, hypoxemia, hypothermia, and a life-threatening situation. Elimination of ethanol followed nonlinear first-order concentration-dependent pharmacokinetics. Fluid balance was disturbed because of marked diuresis, and respirator treatment was needed. The treatment of fluid balance and the risk of hypoxemia in severe alcohol poisoning are emphasized.

Ethanol induces alterations in the central nervous system by differentially interfering with a number of neurotransmitter systems, although the mechanisms by which such effects are executed are not well understood. The present review therefore, is designed to ascertain the effect of ethanol on both excitatory and inhibitory amino acid neurotransmitters, as well as the sulphonated amino acid taurine, assayed by the microdialysis technique within specific brain regions of rat during different types of alcohol intoxication, acute and chronic, as well as during the withdrawal period. Such an under

New draft alcohol guidelines for Australia state that, for pregnant women and women planning pregnancy, 'no drinking is the safest option'. One of the best known adverse effects of alcohol exposure on the fetus is the fetal alcohol syndrome. Others include alcohol-related birth defects, alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorders and increased risks of miscarriage, stillbirth, intrauterine growth restriction, preterm birth and low birthweight. Over half of Australian women consume alcohol during pregnancy. Obstetricians have a pivotal role in advising women of the effects of alcohol on the fe

In the current scenario, prolonged consumption of alcohol across the globe is upsurging an appreciable number of patients with the risk of alcohol-associated liver diseases. According to the recent report, the gut-liver axis is crucial in the progression of alcohol-induced liver diseases, including steatosis, steatohepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Despite several factors associated with alcoholic liver diseases, the complexity of the gut microflora and its great interaction with the liver have become a fascinating area for researchers due to the high exposure of th

The adverse effects of prenatal alcohol consumption have long been known; however, a formal description and clinical diagnosis of these effects was not introduced until 1973. Since then, the distinction of the wide range of effects that can be induced by prenatal alcohol exposure, and, consequently, the terminology to describe these effects has continued to evolve. Although much progress has been made in understanding the consequences of prenatal alcohol exposure, challenges still remain in properly identifying all affected individuals as well as their individual patterns of alcohol-induced de

OBJECTIVE: In previous studies, factors related to a history of suicide attempts in persons with alcohol dependence have included sociodemographic variables, a more severe course of alcoholism, additional substance use disorders, and psychiatric comorbidity. This 5-year prospective study evaluated attributes associated with suicide attempts in a group of treatment-seeking persons with alcohol dependence. Psychiatric comorbidity was examined in terms of a distinction between substance-induced and independent psychiatric disorders.
METHOD: Semistructured interviews were conducted with 1,237 alc
