The International journal of the addictions1975eng
This study collated 23 articles reporting outcome of alcoholism treatment efforts over a 2-year follow-up period. Broad conclusions reached by Costello (1975) in a similar collation of studies reporting on a 1-year follow-up interval found general support. Similar consistencies were noted across studies within groups described as having good outcome profiles as was noted by the previous collation. Good outcome results from matching relatively better prognostic cases wtih programs with broad treatment resources. Multiple baselines were offered as guidelines for program evaluation. Baselines wer

BACKGROUND: Without aftercare treatment, persons discharged from short-term inpatient detoxification for opioid use disorder are at high risk of relapse. In previous work, those who were recently homeless or had pending legal problems were more likely to prefer residential treatment for aftercare. Here, based on clinical experience, the authors hypothesize that a particular clinical factor, surviving an opioid overdose, will be associated with aftercare preference.
METHODS: Between May and December 2015, the authors surveyed consecutive persons seeking inpatient opioid detoxification. To asse

A cross-sectional study of alcoholics who varied widely in duration of abstinence was combined with a four-year follow-up study of the same subjects. Together, the data demonstrated a course of recovery in abstinent alcoholics measured in three ways: severity of symptoms, probability of relapse, and work history. Additionally, the subjects showed high rates of smoking cessation. By every measure, the course of recovery seemed essentially the same in men and women. The recovery process was most rapid in the early years of abstinence but continued for 10 or more years. It was suggested that keys

For over 100 years there has been an academic pursuit of understanding and applying the principals of sport psychology to improve athletic performance. How is it that certain athletes do their best when it means the most while others "choke"? Meeting and exceeding the challenges that are presented can completely change the trajectory of any athlete's career. What is it that separates the good from the great and the great from the superstars? Is it motivation, preparation, determination, discipline, commitment, natural talent, physical strength, or work ethic? Maybe it is a combination of all o

The purpose of this study was to determine whether patient education programs were effective at improving knowledge of substance abuse among dual-diagnosis patients. Adult patients at a general psychiatry hospital were identified for a history of substance abuse. Of the 51 patients included in the study, 25 were on forensic units, 7 were in a private ward, and 19 were on the public unit. Patients were given a pretest at the beginning of the study and received an identical posttest prior to discharge or at the end of the study. The patients on the public unit received up to 16 h per week of Alc

'Sober living houses' are alcohol- and drug-free residences for individuals attempting to establish or maintain sobriety. They offer no formal treatment services but do provide social support and an abstinent living environment. 'Sober living houses' have been used as aftercare placements for clients completing residential treatment, places for clients to live while attending outpatient treatment, or as stand-alone approaches for substance misuse problems. This article identifies areas of research needing attention and suggests that 'sober living houses' have the potential to play a stronger r

The authors developed a series of 15 multiple-choice vignettes which pose common dilemmas in the pharmacotherapy of patients suffering from psychoactive substance use disorders coexisting with other mental disorders. Fourteen judges standardized the treatment options along a 'treatment integration continuum'. The authors surveyed 112 psychiatrists with the vignettes and 3 subscales of the Substance Abuse Attitude Survey. Ten of the 15 vignettes were taken to form the normally distributed Scale for Treatment Integration of the Dually Diagnosed (STIDD), which is described in terms of its reliabi

OBJECTIVES: Non-communicable diseases are estimated to account for 90 % of total deaths and 19 % of premature deaths in Slovakia. Major preventable risk factors of premature mortality are overweight, obesity and alcohol consumption.
BACKGROUND: Screening of risk factors related to alcoholic and nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases (AFLD and NAFLD, respectively) in Slovak outpatients with liver disease.
METHODS: A total group of 923 patients, aged 19-91 years were included in the study. Self-administered anonymous questionnaires (Q) were filled in by them. Twelve questions were included relating

Substantial progress has been reported in the treatment of patients with alcoholism in the United States. Studies that seek to identify the most appropriate form of therapy for alcohol-dependent patients have been an important part of this effort. Recognition that psychotherapy alone cannot help all patients who have alcoholism has led to interest in the use of pharmacotherapy. Recent research demonstrates that pharmacotherapy with the opioid receptor antagonists naltrexone and nalmefene helps prevent relapse in many alcohol-dependent patients.

Native Americans have higher rates of alcohol use, frequency of use, and increased rates of fetal alcohol syndrome, compared with other ethnic groups (J. Hisnanick, 1992; P. A. May, 1996; J. M. Wallace et al., 2003). High prevalence rates of alcohol misuse among Native Americans must be understood in light of their unique history, which has resulted in trauma and exposure to many risk factors for problem alcohol use. Many risk factors have been identified in the general population; however, only some of these risk factors have been examined among Native American populations. The unique history

INTRODUCTION: Medication assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder (OUD) saves lives and enhances quality of life for people in recovery. However, only a small percentage of people eligible for MAT in the United States receive treatment, and among those who do seek treatment, retention is a challenge. This study aims to understand factors that help individuals enter and stay in MAT from the perspective of those in recovery. The patient perspective is vital in efforts to improve care delivery and best support individuals in treatment.
METHODS: Survey development was driven by a review o

While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved several medications for the treatment of alcohol-related problems, their use has not gained wide acceptance in the United States. Typically, patients with alcohol use disorders are only referred to psychosocial support (e.g., Alcoholics Anonymous). However, the use of pharmacotherapy may complement psychosocial treatments, as evidence shows that pharmacotherapy can improve treatment outcomes. The effectiveness of pharmacotherapy depends on patient compliance with taking the medication and the context in which the medication is administer

If untreated, alcohol abuse, which often results from alcohol craving, causes major metabolic abnormalities, altered life-styles, lost productivity, and eventually death. Biochemical mechanisms that may contribute to alcohol craving include the stress response of the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal axis, the endogenous opiate beta-endorphin system, neurotransmitter synthesis and release, hypoglycemia, and nutrient deficiencies. The macronutrient ratio of meals, the resulting insulin response, and nutrient blood levels can affect amino acid and nutrient transport across the blood-brain barrier.

This paper deals with the emergence, elaboration, and use of the concept of "the wounded healer." The term refers to a person whose personal experience of illness and/or trauma has left lingering effects on him--in the form of lessons learned that later served him in ministering to other sufferers, or in the form of symptoms or characteristics that usefully influenced his therapeutic endeavors. While such persons and their actions have been noted across the ages, in other cultures, and in many contexts, it was not until the early twentieth century that the patterns in the behaviors of such per

Seventy-five alcohol-dependent patients (35 males, 40 females) treated by a Minnesota Model in-patient programme were followed up for 1 year. A variety of outcome measures were included, and patients' GPs were also questioned with regard to various aspects of their involvement in treatment for alcohol problems. Males admitted to the programme had a longer history of drinking, consumed more alcohol and showed greater expenditure on alcohol. At 6 months, 66% of males and 45% of females were abstinent; at 1 year, the proportions abstinent were 53% and 39%, respectively. Good outcome for both sexe

The objectives of this study were to determine if significant correlation exists between drinking any alcoholic beverage and risky sex among 326 AIDS patients. Participants completed anonymous surveys. The result of the regression and Pearson Correlation analyses revealed a significant positive correlation between drinking alcohol before sex and frequency of condom use (p < .0001). The number of sex partners respondents reported was also correlated with the frequency of alcohol use (p = .003). The result shows that the quantity of alcohol consumption was correlated with two indicators of risky
