This study examined the behavior of six U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulated per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) compounds in vegetated soils amended with Class A and Class B biosolids. Short-chain PFAS were evenly distributed throughout the 8-cm soil column, while long-chain PFAS accumulated in the lower layers. Sequential extraction showed that short-chain PFAS dominated the water-leachable fraction, while long-chain PFAS were more concentrated in the methanol-extractable fraction. Plant cultivation appeared to promote the redistribution of long-chain PFAS from the wat

Numerous plants of medicinal value grow on Hainan Island (China). Given the lack of knowledge on the phytochemical and pharmacological properties of Michelia shiluensis Chun and Y. F. Wu (M. shiluensis), the application of natural antioxidants and antimicrobials in the food industry has attracted increasing interest. This study aimed to compare the chemical composition, free-radical-scavenging capacity, and antibiosis of aqueous extracts of the fresh and dried leaves of M. shiluensis. The aqueous extract of the leaves of M. shiluensis was obtained using steam distillation, and its chemical com

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are contaminants of concern due to their widespread occurrence in the environment, persistence, and potential to elicit a range of negative health effects. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances are regularly detected in surface waters, but their effects on many aquatic organisms are still poorly understood. Species with thyroid-dependent development, like amphibians, can be especially susceptible to PFAS effects on thyroid hormone regulation. We examined sublethal effects of aquatic exposure to four commonly detected PFAS on larval northern leopard frog

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), as an important class of new persistent organic pollutants, are widely distributed in the environment. Yet the effects of different types and concentrations of PFCs on soil microbial community in urban forest ecosystems are remain uncertain. Here, two typical PFCs, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), were selected to carry out a pot experiment in greenhouse with singly and joint treatment at different concentrations, to examine their effects on composition and diversity of soil microorganisms and availability of soil macronut

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated that chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonic acids (Cl-PFESAs), when used as an alternative to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), result in kidney toxicity. However, their co-exposure with heavy metals, has not yet been described.
OBJECTIVES: To explore the joint effects of Cl-PFESAs and heavy metal exposure on renal health in Chinese adults, and identify specific pollutants driving the associations.
METHODS: Our sample consists of 1312 adults from a cross-sectional survey of general communities in Guangzhou, China. We measured Cl-PFES

Serum perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) have been linked to disruption of maternal thyroid hormone homeostasis, but results have varied between studies which we hypothesized was due to timing of the thyroid hormone measurements, variability in PFAA isomer patterns, or presence of other stressors. In a longitudinal study design, we investigated the time-dependency of associations between PFAA isomers and thyroid hormones during pregnancy and post-partum while considering thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) status and mercury (Hg) co-exposure. In participants of a prospective Canadian birth cohort (n

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous, environmentally persistent chemicals, and prenatal exposures have been associated with adverse child health outcomes. Prenatal PFAS exposure may lead to epigenetic age acceleration (EAA), defined as the discrepancy between an individual's chronologic and epigenetic or biological age.
OBJECTIVES: We estimated associations of maternal serum PFAS concentrations with EAA in umbilical cord blood DNA methylation using linear regression, and a multivariable exposure-response function of the PFAS mixture using Bayesian kernel mach

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental contaminants with significant bioaccumulation potential and toxicological concerns. Specifically, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) has been shown to reduce growth, reduce hatching success and decrease hatchling survivability, and arrest developmental cycles in birds. While the transfer of PFAS from exposed adult birds to their offspring is recognized, the routes of maternal transfer are not yet fully elucidated. Therefore, this mini review synthesizes previously collected. PFAS tissue residue data from a series of chro

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) continue to be one of the most persistent global contaminants and are increasingly recognized as leading metabolic- and hepatic-dysfunction mediators. Despite extensive investigation of PFAS toxicity, a critical gap in the identification and integration of toxicokinetic drivers of hepatic bioaccumulation with mechanistic pathways driving mitochondrial and nuclear receptor-related injury, more specifically, with respect to alternative PFAS strategies, still remains. Legacy PFAS, including PFOA and PFOS, accumulate in the liver and disturb mitochondrial

Prenatal exposure to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) is associated with low birth weight, a condition often resulting from placental dysfunction. However, whether and how PFOA and PFOS affect human placentation and placental-specific functions remains unclear. In this study, we reconstructed a human trophoblast organoid model, incorporating a near-physiological proportion of extravillous trophoblast (EVT). The organoids were exposed to PFOA or PFOS for 7 days. Exposure to PFOA at 10 nM significantly increased the proportion of villous cytotrophoblast (CTB) cel

This study evaluates the performance of various conventional stormwater control measures (SCMs) in mitigating 26 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). PFAS with carbon chain lengths ≥ 9 exhibited greater particulate affinity, ranging from 35% to 73% of their concentration associated with suspended solids. In contrast, only 17-35% of PFAS with C ≤ 8, which dominated the detected compounds, were associated with particulate phases. As most SCMs studied (biofilters, media filters, hydrocyclones, and a retention

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), a class of ubiquitous synthetic organic chemicals, are widely utilized across various industrial applications. However, the long-term neurological health effects of PFAS mixture exposure in humans remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we have designed a comprehensive study to predict and validate cell-type-specific neurotoxicity of PFASs using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and cerebral organoids. Cerebral organoids were exposed to a PFAS mixture at concentrations of 1 × (10 ng/ml PFOS and PFOA, and 1 ng/ml PFHxS), 30 × , and 900 ×

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) exerts adverse effects on neuronal development in young population. Limited evidences have shown that early-life PFOS exposure holds a potential risk for developing age-related neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease later in life. The present study investigated the effects of lactational PFOS exposure on cognitive function using one-year-old mice. Dams were exposed to PFOS (1 mg/kg body weight) through lactation by gavage. Male offspring were used for the behavior test battery to assess cognitive function. Western blot analysis was conducted to

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have already drawn a lot of attention for their accumulation and reproductive toxicity in organisms. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanoic sulfonate (PFOS), two representative PFAS, are toxic to humans and animals. Due to their widespread use in environmental media with multiple toxicities, PFOA and PFOS have been banned in numerous countries, and many substitutes have been produced to meet market requirements. Unfortunately, most alternatives to PFOA and PFOS have proven to be cumulative and highly toxic. Of the reported multiple organ

Chirality, a fundamental property of matter, is often overlooked in the studies of marine organic matter cycles. Dihydroxypropanesulfonate (DHPS), a globally abundant organosulfur compound, serves as an ecologically important currency for nutrient and energy transfer from phytoplankton to bacteria in the ocean. However, the chirality of DHPS in nature and its transformation remain unclear. Here, we developed a novel approach using chiral phosphorus-reagent labeling to separate DHPS enantiomers. Our findings demonstrated that at least one enantiomer of DHPS is present in marine diatoms and cocc

Atmospheric transport and wet deposition have contributed to the worldwide distribution of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, even in remote areas far from known industrial sources. However, little is known regarding the impact of cloud and precipitation formation dynamics on PFAS transport and wet deposition, nor the range of variability in PFAS concentrations within a closely distributed monitoring network. Precipitation samples were collected from a network of 25 stations in a focused geographic region (the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, USA) f

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) is member of a class of molecules with fluorinated carbon chains known as polyfluoroalkyls. PFOS have been used to produce a variety of industry and comsumer uses. However, a significant concern is that it accumulates in the environment, including in animals and humans, and that it is a potential immunosuppressant. Here we analyze immune homeostasis in mice following chronic exposure to PFOS at levels up to those historically found in PFOS manufacturing workers. Mice were exposed to 0.15, 1.5, 15, or 50 µg /kg of PFOS for 28 days, after which, B cells, T ce

Human exposures to perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been linked to several diseases associated with adverse health outcomes. Animal studies have been conducted, though these may not be sufficient due to the inherent differences in metabolic processes between humans and rodents. Acquiring relevant data on the health effects of short-chain PFAS can be achieved through methods supported by in vitro human cell-based models. Specifically, cytotoxicity assays are the crucial first step to providing meaningful information used for determining safety and providing baseline inf

Cattle that were at steady-state serum polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) concentrations due to several years of exposure to water contaminated by residues of Aqueous Film-Forming (AFFF) firefighting foam had perfluorooctane sulphonate (PFOS) isomers, perfluoroheptane sulphonate (PFHpS), perfluorohexane sulphonate (PFHxS), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) in serum. Elimination serum half-lives were determined in five heifers from serial blood sampling over 215 days. Eleven additional animals that had blood sampled on day 19 (d19) were euthanised on d63.
