Amnio-allantoic fluid exchange for prevention of intestinal damage in gastroschisis II: Effects of exchange performed by using two different solutions.

The prevention of intestinal damage in gastroschisis was reported after amnio-allantoic fluid (AAF) exchange using serum saline. However it is not clear why AAF exchange prevents intestinal damage. Are some harmful chemicals withdrawn from AAF by exchange or sodium content of AAF is merely increased? A study was planned to find the end results of AAF exchange performed by using two different solutions in the chicken embryo gastroschisis model. After creation of gastroschisis, three groups were studied. In the first group AAF exchange was not performed. In the second group AAF exchange was perf

Amnio-allantoic fluid exchange for the prevention of intestinal damage in gastroschisis: an experimental study on chick embryos.

In gastroschisis, the protruding intestine is usually shortened, thickened, and covered with a fibrous peel. Urine components, which are increased in the amniotic fluid with the onset of renal function, are responsible for these changes. In the chick embryo model of gastroschisis, the authors performed amnio-allantoic fluid exchange to reduce the effect of urinary products. There were three study groups: control, gastroschisis only, and gastroschisis plus exchange. There was a significant decrease in creatinine (P < .05) and a slight decrease in urea concentrations in the gastroschisis-plus-ex

Infection, haemorrhagia and death of chick embryos experimentally inoculated with Listeria monocytogenes by the intra-allantoic route.

When allantoic sacs of embryonated (SPF) chicken eggs were inoculated with different doses to investigate the pathogenicity of two strains of Listeria monocytogens (4379 and NCTC 5214), infection resulted which spread rapidly throughout the embryonated eggs. When low doses were used small pock lesions on the chorio-allantoic membrane (CAM), generalized haemorrhage (especially on the head region) and deaths of the embryos with necrotic foci on the liver and heart were observed. Neither the pock lesions nor the haemorrhage were detected in embryos dying from high doses of the bacterium. Bacteria

A case of fetal vesicoallantoic cyst in the umbilical cord.

A vesicoallantoic cyst in the umbilical cord was detected by fetal ultrasonography at 16 weeks of gestation. The blood flow through the umbilical vessels was evaluated with periodic color Doppler ultrasonographic examinations because compression by the cyst may cause reduction in blood flow and lead to fetal death. After disappearance of the cyst, the infant was delivered vaginally. Retrograde cystography revealed a narrow channel between the bladder and the navel, confirming patent urachus, which was resected without any complications.

[Peritoneal dialysis in the chick embryo with gastroschisis].

The ever increasing possibilities of prenatal diagnosis and intra-uterine treatment of malformations has created the need for simple and reproducible experimental models on which to build a better knowledge of the biology of the abnormal fetus. Using our own model of experimental gastroschisis (GX) in the chick embryo, we have undertaken to study whether transperitoneal exchanges of water and solutes take place after prolonged visceral exposure to the mixture of amniotic and allantoic fluids which has a greater content in Potassium, Urea, and Proteins and less sodium, chloride and glucose than

Urachal remnants: from embryology to clinical practice.

The urachus is a tubular structure that is apparent on the third week and connects the ventral cloaca to the yolk sac, as a progression from the allantois. Following the normal regression procedure, the urachus remains as the median umbilical ligament. Urachal remnants are present in 1.03% of paediatric patients while in 92.5% of cases represent incidental findings. Urachal anomalies are classified in four types as patent urachus (50-52%), urachal sinus (15%), urachal cyst (30%) and urachal diverticulum (3-5%). Ultrasound scan is the most commonly performed diagnostic imaging study. In case of

The primary considerations and image guided diagnosis of an infected urachal cyst in a pediatric patient.

Urachal cyst is a rare condition that is typically asymptomatic and will often have symptomatology that is misdiagnosed or missed. A urachal cyst occurs in 1 out of 5000 live-births, but is only clinically relevant in 1 out of 150,000 of the population often as an incidental finding. The urachus is the embryological remnant of the allantois, which connects the apex of the bladder to the umbilicus, and usually fully obliterates to become the median umbilical ligament. Urachal defects are uncommon and cysts are usually asymptomatic until infection results. An infected cyst may present mimicking

Urachal cyst with xanthogranulomatous cystitis: A rare case report.

An urachal cyst is a sinus remaining from the allantois during embryogenesis which is rarely manifested in adults. The urachus is an embryologic remnant which degenerates after the birth. Defective obliteration of the urachus leads to urachal abnormalities. Urachal cyst is a rare pathology in adult women, and this pathology should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute abdomen. Xanthogranulomatous cystitis (XC) is a benign disease of unknown etiology. The clinical manifestations of these are nonspecific such as lower abdominal pain, umbilical discharge with occasional hematuria.

Minimally united ischiopagus twins: infraumbilical union with cloacal anomalies.

In researching the embryology and pathological anatomy of conjoined twins, more than 1,200 cases were reviewed from the literature of the past 100 years; a few additional cases were obtained by personal communications. One hundred twenty-eight were classified as ischiopagus, the typical cases having union in the perineum, the pelvis, and the lower abdominal wall. Eighteen atypical ischiopagus cases, however, were conjoined only in the infraumbilical abdominal wall, none with union in the perineum or the bony pelvis but all with anomalies of the cloaca. Twelve infants survived surgery in nine o

Placental defect and embryonic lethality in mice lacking hepatocyte growth factor/scatter factor.

Hepatocyte growth factor/scatter factor (HGF/SF) functions as a mitogen, motogen and morphogen for a variety of cultured cells. The genes for HGF/SF and its receptor (the c-met proto-oncogene product) are expressed in many tissues during the embryonic periods and in the adult. HGF/SF is thought to mediate a signal exchange between the mesenchyme and epithelia during mouse development. To examine the physiological role of HGF/SF, we generated mutant mice with a targeted disruption of the HGF/SF gene. Here we report that homozygous mutant embryos have severely impaired placentas with markedly re

Vascular steal: the pathogenetic mechanism producing sirenomelia and associated defects of the viscera and soft tissues.

Dissection of the abdominal vasculature in 11 cases of sirenomelia has demonstrated a pattern of vascular abnormalities that explains the defects usually found in this condition. The common feature is the presence of a single large artery, arising from high in the abdominal cavity, which assumes the function of the umbilical arteries and diverts nutrients from the caudal end of the embryo distal to the level of its origin. The steal vessel derives from the vitelline artery complex, an early embryonic vascular network that supplies the yolk sac. Arteries below the level of this steal vessel are

[Laparoscopic Resection of Urachal Cysts].

Objective This video is a step-by-step description of the laparoscopic technique for the resection of urachal cysts. Indication The urachus is an embryonic extraperitoneal structure between the urinary bladder and the umbilicus. Failure of the allantois to obliterate in utero leads to urachal anomalies such as fistulas or cysts. Because of the risk of infection and malignant degeneration later in life, urachal fistulas or cysts are usually removed by surgical excision. Method The procedure is performed in supine position with 3 mm trocars in the epigastric angle, the left upper abdomen and the

[Laparoscopic resection of persistent patent urachus].

The urachus in the foetus is a fibromuscular duct, which connects the allantois to the bladder and it is usually occluded in the 4-5th gestation months. Incomplete occlusion of the urachus at the time of birth is considered to be physiological, but later it can lead to recurrent discharge and inflammation of the umbilicus. To establish the diagnosis, ultrasound is the first examination of choice. A 19-year old obese female patient presented with umbilical discharge, and a persistent urachus was detected by ultrasound. After incision of the peritoneum the duct was excised from the umbilicus to

A latex agglutination test for the rapid detection of avian influenza virus subtype H5N1 and its clinical application.

A rapid and simple latex agglutination test (LAT) for the detection of avian influenza virus (AIV) subtype H5N1 in chicken allantoic fluids, tracheal swabs, and tissues was developed. Monoclonal antibodies against the hemagglutinin glycoprotein of H5N1 were covalently coupled onto the surface of carboxylated latex bead using a water-soluble carbodiimide to obtain sensitized latex particles (SLP). These SLPs strongly agglutinated in the presence of allantoic fluid containing H5N1, but not fluids containing other AIV sub-types such as HIN1, H3N2, H4N6, and H9N2. Using this LAT, the virus was det

Vascular remodeling by intussusceptive angiogenesis.

Intussusception (growth within itself) is an alternative to the sprouting mode of angiogenesis. The protrusion of opposing microvascular walls into the capillary lumen creates a contact zone between endothelial cells. The endothelial bilayer is perforated, intercellular contacts are reorganized, and a transluminal pillar with an interstitial core is formed, which is soon invaded by myofibroblasts and pericytes leading to its rapid enlargement by the deposition of collagen fibrils. Intussusception has been implicated in three processes of vascular growth and remodeling. (1) Intussusceptive micr

Retinoic acid regulates fetoplacental vascularization via notch signaling and a SEMA3E/F-PLEXIND1 axis.

The placenta is vital for fetal development, and altered placental vascularization, the most common placental pathology, underlies prevalent disorders, including fetal growth restriction, prematurity, and pregnancy complications. Impaired placental vascularization is associated with Vitamin A deficiency, but the mechanisms are undefined. To investigate this, we used retinoic acid (RA)-deficient Raldh2-/- embryos, and found they exhibit allantoic and placental endothelial hyperproliferation and impaired arterial-venous remodeling, which were rescued by providing all-trans-RA (ATRA) via maternal
