Patch testing is an important tool in the diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis. Although this technique can be accurate, occasionally the results may be inconclusive. A previously positive result to an allergen may become negative upon repeat testing, and this may complicate the process of achieving a definitive diagnosis. There are some potential explanations for such inconsistencies, including the Excited Skin Syndrome, irritant reactions, a need to repeat the diagnostic algorithm, "rogue" reactions, and "contact allergy." These explanations should be taken into account when interpreting

Hybridomas secreting monoclonal antibodies (MAb) specific to American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) were produced through a fusion of immune splenocytes of a BALB/c mouse immunized with crude cockroach (CR) extract and mouse myeloma cells. Two hybridomas namely 38G6 and 3C2 were established. These specific hybridomas secreted IgG1 monoclonal immunoglobulins with antigenic specificities to CR protein components of over 207 to 72 kDa and 45 to 40 kDa, respectively. The monoclonal antibodies were applied to select their specific epitopes out of the crude CR extract using affinity chromatograp

Allergen immunotherapy is a disease-modifying treatment for allergic diseases. The predominant traditional immunotherapy is through subcutaneous administration of allergens to gradually desensitize allergic individuals. While effective, traditional allergen immunotherapy approaches are often lengthy, time consuming for patients and can result in local or systemic adverse reactions. Nontraditional immunotherapies are emerging as promising alternatives, offering potentially more convenient, safe and efficacious treatment options. This review sought to comprehensively examine the safety, efficacy

PURPOSE: Hypersensitivity to fungi is associated with rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma. For some fungi, such as Alternaria alternata (A. alternata), the symptoms of asthma are persistent, increasing disease severity and the risk of fatal outcomes. There are a large number of species of fungi but knowledge of them remains limited. This, together with the difficulties in obtaining adequate standardized extracts, means that there remain significant challenges in the diagnosis and immunotherapy of allergy associated with fungi. The type of indoor fungi related to asthma/allergy varies according to g

BACKGROUND: Some clinicians utilize allergen-specific immunotherapy (specific therapy), employing only the extracts of allergens that produce positive skin tests. Others use allergen-mixture immunotherapy (mixture therapy), employing premixed extracts containing both skin reactive and non-reactive (irrelevant) allergens.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of these two approaches and to identify sensitization to irrelevant allergens included in mixture therapy.
METHOD: A total of 20 adults with allergic rhinitis/asthma who were switched from successful specific t

Cross-reactivity of allergens from the pollen of the Compositae weeds, Parthenium hysterophorus (American feverfew) and Ambrosia (ragweed), in 2 groups of patients with different geographic distributions was studied. Parthenium-sensitive Indian patients, who were never exposed to ragweed, elicited positive skin reactions with ragweed pollen extracts. A significant correlation in the RAST scores of Parthenium and ragweed-specific IgE was observed with the sera of Parthenium and ragweed-sensitive Indian and US patients, respectively. RAST inhibition experiments demonstrated that the binding of I

In the current issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Sánchez-Martínez et al. demonstrate that oral and small-intestine small intestinal bacteria can modulate IgE-mediated anaphylaxis through metabolic degradation of immunodominant peanut allergens. This study provides insights into microbial mechanisms underlying food-induced anaphylaxis and may point to new directions for advancing food allergy therapy.

Objectives: Genital allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) can profoundly affect quality of life. The role of different chemical compounds used in maxi pads and pantiliners as potential allergens remains underexplored. This study aims to investigate potential allergens present in these products. Methods: A search for pantiliners and maxi pads was conducted on websites of common drug stores, and compounds were identified through online listings, packaging, or manufacturer contact. Compounds were grouped based on chemical composition, structural similarities, or association with compound families usin

Allergen exposure is associated with the development of allergen-specific sensitization, but their relationship is influenced by other contemporaneous exposures (such as microbial exposure) and the genetic predisposition of the host. Clinical outcomes of the primary prevention studies that tested the effectiveness of allergen avoidance in pregnancy and early life on the subsequent development of sensitization and asthma published to date are inconsistent. Therefore, we cannot provide any evidence-based advice on the use of allergen avoidance for the primary prevention of these conditions. The

Novel diabetic devices are being developed to help manage diabetes and improve the quality of life of patients with diabetes. Both insulin pumps and glucose monitors are becoming increasingly convenient, long-lasting, and discrete for patients, but this often requires the use of strong external cutaneous adhesives and increased contact time with the skin. As a consequence, these devices have been associated with a variety of dermatologic reactions, namely, irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. Some of these reactions can be severe, precluding the use of these devices, which puts patients'

Alternaria alternata spores are important allergens causing "hayfever". Outdoor fungal exposure is primarily associated with increased asthma symptoms and increased risk of asthma exacerbations. In our outpatient-clinic, we investigated patients who presented with symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis and respiratory symptoms in the summertime. We found a sensitisation to Alternaria alternata in about 6 % of the investigated patients. Especially in children and teenagers, the sensitisation is clinically important. The spores of Alternaria alternata are responsible for the development and persist

Health care workers may be at risk of occupational allergic contact dermatitis because of their frequent exposure to medical hand skin cleansers. We identified American Contact Dermatitis Society Core 80 Allergens found in medical hand skin cleansers (waterless skin soaps, water-needed skin soaps, and skin disinfectants) in the United States and developed a list of "low-allergen" medical hand skin cleansers. Waterless skin soaps most commonly contained fragrance, tocopherol, and sodium benzoate. Top allergens in water-needed skin soaps included fragrance, chloroxylenol, propylene glycol, and c

Acrylates are synthetic thermoplastic resins used in a multitude of products, ranging from bone cement to artificial nails. They represent an important and increasing cause of both occupational and nonoccupational allergic contact dermatitis. Isobornyl acrylate, an acrylic monomer found within ultraviolet-cured inks, adhesives and various medical devices for diabetes, has emerged as an important sensitizer. In addition, long-lasting nail products have played a significant role in the increased prevalence of acrylate allergy. Sensitized individuals classically present with facial or eyelid derm

Natural rubber latex (NRL) and rubber accelerators are well-known causes of occupational skin diseases. The latest epidemiological data on rubber allergy show that rubber additives are still among the allergens most strongly associated with occupational contact dermatitis, however, a decrease in NRL allergy has been confirmed. A review of recent publications on rubber allergens based on the Pubmed database is presented. New glove manufacturing processes have been developed, such as low-protein natural rubber gloves, vulcanisation accelerator-free gloves, or specific-purpose gloves containing a

Every year, new contact allergens, chemicals reported to have caused contact allergy/ACD for the first time, are described in literature. In the journals Contact Dermatitis and Dermatitis, 172 such compounds were identified in the period 2008-2015, 119 of which induced ACD. These are presented with the following data: name, synonyms, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) number, patch test data, function or class, causative product, number of patients, occupation (in case of occupational ACD), additional clinical data (if applicable), and references. Approximately one third of the new allergens wer
