The relationship between borderline personality disorder and occupational participation: An integrative review.

This integrative review explores the impact of borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptomology and behaviours on occupational capacity, participation, and sustainability. The disorder has also been associated with lower education levels, higher levels of attrition in tertiary education populations, and low occupational participation and employment rates. Personality traits and symptomology have been found to substantially detract from employability. Articles were identified from CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), PsycINFO/Ovid, ProQuest, and PubMed databases.

The experiences of families of children with cerebral palsy and complex disability after three years accessing the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

INTRODUCTION: In Australia, children with cerebral palsy and complex disability receive funded supports through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). This individualised funding scheme requires parents to navigate and advocate on behalf of their child, supported by expert reports, recommendations, and allied health services. Supports aim to enable participation in all areas of daily life, which may be otherwise largely inaccessible to children with complex disability and their families. This study aimed to explore the experiences of families of children with complex disability after

Effects of introducing an allied health assessment pro forma on the management of acute stroke patients.

PURPOSE: There is a small body of evidence that supports the use of care pathways and assessment pro formas for the management of acute stroke patients, however, such tools applied specifically to the allied health disciplines are not in widespread use. This study sought to evaluate the effects of introducing an assessment pro forma on the allied health management of acute stroke patients. METHODS: The allied health management of 40 consecutive stroke patients admitted after the introduction of the assessment pro forma was compared with that of a historical control group of the same size. The

Occupational radiation dose among student radiographers, nuclear medicine technologists, and radiotherapists in an Australian university.

To become registered radiation worker as radiographer, nuclear medicine (NM) technologist, or radiotherapist in Australian health system, a 4-y bachelor's degree, or a 2-y master's degree in medical imaging (MI), NM, or radiation therapy (RT) approved by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency is required. During their supervised clinical practice period, it is crucial to monitor students' occupational radiation dose as their annual dose limit is 1 mSv y-1 unlike regular occupational dose of 20 mSv y-1. In this study, the distribution and trend of occupational dose among over 300

Seeking treatment for temporomandibular disorders: What patients can expect from non-dental health care providers.

The dental profession has long been the primary source for clinical management of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). However, patients with a facial pain problem may seek diagnosis and/or treatment from other health care providers. These providers may be physicians or other professional-level practitioners, or they could be members of various allied groups, such as physical therapists or occupational therapists. However, little has been written about what patients might experience if they seek care outside of the dental profession. This article reports the results of an Internet

From students to professionals: results of a longitudinal study of attitudes to pre-qualifying collaborative learning and working in health and social care in the United Kingdom.

During a longitudinal evaluation of a pre-qualifying interprofessional curriculum, health and social care students completed questionnaires concerning communication and teamwork skills and interprofessional learning and working. Data were collected on entry to their educational programme, during the second year of study, at qualification and after 9-12 months' qualified practice. This paper presents results from practice data from 414 professionals; 275 were educated on the interprofessional curriculum, 139 on previous uniprofessional curricula. The former were more confident at qualification

The perceptions of first point of contact roles in primary care by pre-registration students of the allied health professions.

AIM: To develop a better understanding of the perceptions of first point of contact roles within primary care by pre-registration students of the Allied Health Professions (AHPs). BACKGROUND: General practice in the UK is under growing pressure from declining general practitioner (GP) numbers and increased service demand. The National Health Service (NHS) is attempting to mitigate this demand by making more effective use of its highly experienced workforce through the creation of first contact practitioners (FCPs). Working in primary care, FCPs are highly experienced AHPs with three or more y

An investigation of pilot fatigue in helicopter emergency medical services.

Pilot error has caused the majority of helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) accidents in the United States for almost 2 decades. Pilot fatigue may have contributed to some of these accidents. This nonexperimental quantitative study investigated the relationships between fatigue reported by on-duty HEMS pilots (the criterion variable) and consecutive HEMS pilot day shifts, consecutive HEMS pilot night shifts, age, and experience as an HEMS pilot (the predictor variables). Surveys completed by 395 on-duty HEMS pilots in the US were examined to quantify respondent fatigue with the Brief F

Latex sensitisation in healthcare workers in Singapore.

INTRODUCTION: Epidemiological data on latex sensitisation among Asian healthcare workers is lacking. The aim of the study is to determine the rate of latex sensitisation in our healthcare workers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We recruited 313 healthcare workers, of which 46.6% were operating theatre staff and 53.4% were non-operating theatre staff. Seventy-one administrative staff served as controls. All participants answered a self-administered questionnaire relating to latex exposure and glove-related symptoms. Latex sensitisation was determined by skin prick testing to latex and latex-specific I

Patient safety considerations in the rehabilitation of the individual with cognitive impairment.

Deficits in cognitive functioning are associated with many safety concerns, including difficulties performing activities of daily living, medication errors, motor vehicle accidents, impaired awareness of deficits, decision-making capacity, falls, and travel away from home. Preventing adverse safety outcomes is particularly relevant in rehabilitation patients. Integration of information and recommendations stemming from allied disciplines, such as rehabilitation medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and neuropsychology, is the most effective way to limit poor outcome

The intrapartum management of the HIV-infected mother and her infant.

The number of HIV-infected pregnant women in the United States is steadily increasing. While seroprevalence rates vary widely by geography, as many as 2 to 5 per cent of pregnant women in epicenters are seropositive. Medical management of the HIV-infected woman during labor and delivery depends on the clinical stage of her disease. Many will be asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic and can be managed as usual. For others, delivery may be complicated by concomitant infections and AIDS-related conditions. Between 25 and 40 per cent of infants born to HIV infected mothers will acquire HIV infection.

Factors associated with workplace violence in paramedics.

INTRODUCTION: The majority of research that has explored workplace violence has focused on establishing the prevalence of violence in different settings. In general, there is a paucity of research that explores factors that may predict or increase the risk of experiencing violence in the workplace. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this research was to determine predictors of violence for paramedics. METHODS: A questionnaire was developed that focused on paramedics' experiences with six forms of violence: verbal abuse, property damage/theft, intimidation, physical abuse, sexual harassment, and sexual as

Sexual violence by occupational forces during and after World War II: influence of experiencing and witnessing of sexual violence on current mental health in a sample of elderly Austrians.

BACKGROUND: Wartime rape is an atrocity with long-lasting impacts not only on victims but whole societies. In this brief report, we present data on experience and witness of sexual violence during World War II (WWII) and subsequent time of occupation and on indicators of mental health in a sample of elderly Austrians. METHODS: Interviews of 298 elderly Austrians from a larger epidemiological study on WWII traumatization were analyzed for the impact of experience and witness of sexual violence during the wartime committed by occupational forces. Interviews comprised a biographical/historical s

Effectiveness of allied health therapy in the symptomatic management of progressive supranuclear palsy: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is an adult onset neurodegenerative condition associated with mobility, balance, speech, swallowing, vision and cognitive changes. The condition is diagnosed using the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the Society of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (SPSP) criteria. Therapeutic interventions for PSP are important, and a healthcare team should include a physiotherapist, occupational therapist and speech therapist. Mobility, speech and swallowing problems are commonly experienced, and aspiration pneumonia is the le
