The eight monkey species occurring in Surinam were studied in the Raleigh-vallen-Voltzberg Nature Reserve along the Coppename River. Special emphasis was placed on determining how these eight species divide up available habitat and food resources within a 300-ha study area. Cebus apella apella is probably the most adaptable of the Surinam monkeys. It was found mainly in the understory and lower to middle parts of the canopy of all five forest types (high rain forest, low rain forest, mountain savanna forest, liane forest, pina swamp forest) in the study area, and entered a variety of edge habi

Transmission of herpesvirus between humans and non-human primates represents a serious potential threat to human health and endangered species conservation. This study aimed to identify herpesvirus genomes in samples of neotropical primates (NTPs) in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. A total of 242 NTPs, including Callithrix sp., Alouatta sp., Sapajus sp., and Callicebus sp., were evaluated by pan-herpesvirus polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing. Sixty-two (25.6%) samples containing genome segments representative of members of the family Herpesviridae, including 16.1% for Callitrichine

BACKGROUND: New World monkeys (Platyrrhini), a highly diverse primate lineage endemic to Mexico, Central and South America, include howler monkeys (Alouatta spp.), one of the most ecologically successful genera in the region. They have evolved key adaptations including a specialized folivorous diet and distinctive howling calls that carry over long distances in tropical rainforests, conferring critical survival advantages. However, the genetic underpinnings of these adaptations-specifically, the genes involved in fiber digestion, fermentation, and metabolic adaptation for folivory, and those r

In the history of yellow fever (YF) outbreaks in Brazil, howler monkeys (Alouatta sp.) and marmosets (Callithrix sp.) have been among the most affected genera, exhibiting significant hepatic injuries similar to those seen in humans. However, limited information exists regarding yellow fever virus (YFV) infection in their central nervous system (CNS). To address this gap, an epidemiological study was conducted to assess tissue changes, viral detection, and cytokine profiles in the brains of both neotropical primate species when they are naturally infected with YFV. A total of 22 brain samples f

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic parasite with a great impact on the health of Neotropical primates (NP). The aim of this study was to compare the agreement between the immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT) and the modified agglutination test (MAT) to detect IgG anti-T. gondii antibodies in NP.
METHODS: Convenience serum samples of 77 animals were tested by IFAT and MAT according to standard protocols, and the agreement between results was analyzed using McNemar's χ2 test.
RESULTS: The samples included 30 red-handed howlers (Alouatta belzebul), 24 brown howler monkeys (Alouatta g

Non-human primates (NHPs) are reported as exclusive hosts of Trypanosoma minasense, whose transmission cycle remains unknown. We investigated trypanosomatid infections in 194 NHPs of nine species from the Brazilian Southeast region. We evaluated the impact of landscape composition and forest fragmentation on T. minasense infection. In the Atlantic Forest areas, Sapajus nigritus presented a higher positivity for T. minasense on the blood slides (60.9%) compared to Callithrix spp. (24.6%) and Alouatta guariba clamitans (20.7%); molecular analysis revealed higher infection prevalences in S. nigri

Tourism imposes costs and benefits on wild primates. Endangered black howler monkey (Alouatta pigra) troops with high exposure to tourism had higher levels of botfly (Alouattamyia baeri) parasitism. Edge habitat and juvenile numbers did not seem to confound the observed relationship. To improve the cost/benefit ratio of tourism, we recommend further investigation.

Neotropical Primates (Platyrrhini) show great diversity in their life histories, ecology, behaviour and genetics. This diversity extends to their chromosome complements, both to autosomes and to sex chromosomes. In this contribution, we will review what is currently known about sex chromosomes in this group, both from cytogenetic and from genomic evidence. The X and Y chromosomes in Neotropical Primates, also known as New World Monkeys, have striking structural differences compared with Old World Monkeys when Catarrhini sex chromosomes are considered. The XY bivalent displays a different meiot

Here we report the first evidence of microplastic ingestion by arboreal primates. We found green-colored microplastic fiber filaments (< 5 mm) in the stomachs of two red howler monkey (Alouatta juara) individuals from central Amazonian várzea forests during seasonal floods. We infer that the plastic particles may have been derived from the decomposition of ghost nets (abandoned fishing nets) deposited on trees during annual flooding of the várzea forests. Our findings highlight the need for further research to assess the extent of plastic ingestion by forest-dwelling species and the possible c

Sylvatic yellow fever is a zoonosis associated mainly with wild animals, especially those in the genus Alouatta, that act as the source of infection. Once infected, these animals pass the disease on to humans by way of an infected mosquito belonging to the genera Aedes, Haemagogus, or Sabethes. The present study is the first report of a case of yellow fever in non-human primates (NHP) in the State of Paraná, Brazil. After the case was diagnosed, several prophylactic measures were adopted to prevent outbreaks of the disease in humans.

Four of 5 howler monkeys (Alouatta caraya) experimentally infected with Herpesvirus saimiri (HVS) developed a rapidly fatal malignant lymphoma accompanied by peripheral T-cell lymphocytosis. HVS was isolated from fresh and tissue cultured blood and tissue lymphocytes and from cell cultures derived from nonlymphoid organs. Humoral antibodies against HVS-induced antigens were detected in the sera of the animals. The in vitro response of the peripheral blood lymphocytes to mitogenic stimulants was depressed following HVS infection.

Atelines are of particular interest to primate evolutionary studies because they converge with hominoids in postcranial anatomy, including the vertebral column. Currently, our understanding of ateline vertebral morphology is limited to mainly qualitative descriptions and functional interpretations based on general categories of positional behavior. Even less is known about the vertebrae of other platyrrhines. This study more closely examines vertebral form and function in atelines and cebines by combining direct field observations of axial postures and movements, assessments of spinal loading

In November 2006, an entomological investigation was carried out in a native forest in the municipality of Porto Alegre, State of Rio Grande do Sul. The result was the capture of several Culicidae species, including the first recording of the presence of Haemagogus leucocelaenus in this locality. This species is considered to be a vector for the yellow fever virus in some municipalities of this State, and this was the motivation for the present communication, in order to warn regarding the potential of this area for circulation of the etiological agent for this disease.

The Plica sublingualis of new world monkeys was studied microscopically. In Ateles there are approximately 1700 taste buds in the epithelium of the Plica sublingualis, they are fewer in number in Alouatta, Lagothrix, Aotus and are absent in Saimiri and Cebus. The taste buds are situated consistently at the tip of the Plica sublingualis and near the orifices of the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands. From this topographical coincidence it is inferred that the function of the taste buds at the Plica sublingualis might permit a comparison between the fresh saliva with the general saliva

PURPOSE: Habitat fragmentation is the main threat to primate survival in the world. Additionally, changes in the environments in which they live can also contribute to exposure to pathogens. To investigate some pathogens that free-living primates may be exposed to in Rio Grande do Sul State (RS; southern Brazil) and characterize the forest remnants in which they live, we investigated anti-Neospora caninum, Toxoplasma gondii, and Sarcocystis spp. antibodies in the serum of the animals.
METHODS: We analyzed 105 serum samples from 63 black howler monkeys (Alouatta caraya), 39 southern brown howl

BACKGROUND: Yellow fever virus (YFV) remains a re-emerging zoonotic threat in South America. While epizootics in free-ranging Alouatta spp. are well-documented, little is known about YFV infection in other Neotropical non-human primates (NHPs), particularly in captive settings. Here, we report eight NHP fatalities associated with YFV occurring in early 2025, in the Colombian department of Putumayo, a known endemic area.
CASES DESCRIPTION: Between February and May 2025, eight fatal YFV cases were confirmed via RT-PCR in four NHP genera-Cebus albifrons, Ateles fusciceps (IUCN-endangered), Lagot

Previous research has found that hominoids have stronger modularity between limb elements than other anthropoids, suggesting that there is less constraint on morphological diversification (e.g., limb proportions) in hominoids in terms of evolutionary independence. However, degrees of modularity in the axial skeleton have not been investigated across a broad range of anthropoid taxa. Thus, it is unknown whether hominoids also have stronger modularity in the axial skeleton than other anthropoids, which has implications for the evolution of diverse torso morphologies in Miocene apes as well as th

Food supplementation by humans in peri-urban and urban landscapes can lead to excessive intake of energy and certain macronutrients, and affect animal health. In this study, we evaluated the influence of food supplementation on urinary health indicators in brown howler monkeys (Alouatta guariba) by comparing supplemented and non-supplemented free-ranging peri-urban groups. We also evaluated the effect of sex, day shift, and season of sampling. Between August 2021 and August 2022, we non-invasively collected 61 samples (43 from females and 18 from males) from adult individuals (N = 10) in three

In Brazil, Plasmodium infections in non-human primates (NHPs) have been associated with P. simium and P. brasilianum, which are morphologically and genetically similar to the human-infecting species P. vivax and P. malariae, respectively. Surveillance and monitoring of wild NHPs are crucial for understanding the distribution of these parasites and assessing the risk of zoonotic transmission. This study aimed to detect the presence of Plasmodium spp. genetic material in Platyrrhini primates from 47 municipalities in the states of Bahia and Minas Gerais. The animals were captured using Tomahawk-
