[The functional status of the brain in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm].

We performed electroencephalography to 11 patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm in order to investigate the functional status of the brain. The relative potency (RP) of the main rhythms (alpha, beta, teta and delta) was increased, as well as the beta/alpha activation ratio. The increase of low-frequency rhythms (delta and teta) indicates the brain cortex hypoxia. The high-frequency reactivity of the brain (alpha- and beta-rhythms) was decreased in such patients, which was probably due to the decreased sensitivity of the receptor zone of the upper respiratory tract.

Dexmedetomidine and clonidine induce long-lasting activation of the respiratory rhythm generator of neonatal mice: possible implication for critical care.

Dexmedetomidine and clonidine are alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonists increasingly used in the critical care unit as sedative agents for their benzodiazepine-sparing effects and their limited depressing effect on breathing. However adverse effects on breathing have been also reported with alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonists and their central effects on the respiratory rhythm generator are poorly known. We therefore examined the effects of dexmedetomidine, clonidine, the alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonist yohimbine and the benzodiazepine midazolam on the activity of the isolated respiratory rhythm generator o

Cortical sources of resting state EEG rhythms are abnormal in dyslexic children.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies have been inconclusive whether dominant resting state alpha rhythms differ in amplitude in dyslexic subjects when compared to control subjects, being these rhythms considered as a reflection of effective cortical neural synchronization and cognition. Here we used a validated EEG source estimation to test the hypothesis that resting state alpha rhythms are abnormal in dyslexic subjects and are related to reading deficits. METHODS: Eyes-closed resting state electroencephalographic (EEG) data were recorded in 26 dyslexics (12 males, mean age of 11 years ± 0.5 standard

Macromolecular transport in heart valves. III. Experiment and theory for the size distribution of extracellular liposomes in hyperlipidemic rabbits.

Monoaminergic projections are among the first supraspinal inputs to innervate spinal networks. Little is known regarding the role of monoamines in modulating ongoing locomotor patterns evoked by endogenous release of neurotransmitter. Here we activate a locomotor-like rhythm by electrical stimulation of afferents and then test the modulatory effects of monoamines on the frequency, pattern, and quality of the rhythm. Stimulation of the cauda equina induced a rhythm consisting of left-right and ipsilateral alternation indicative of locomotor-like activity. First, we examined the effects of norad

Unusual EEG patterns.

Some of the unusual patterns that can be encountered on the EEG are described briefly. The patterns are grouped according to the predominant frequencies involved and/or by distinctive morphology or distribution. Those involving predominantly the alpha frequency range are alpha squeak, retained alpha, alpha-delta sleep, unilateral decrease in reactivity of alpha activity, and extreme spindles. The patterns involving the beta frequency range are the fast alpha variant, posterior temporal fast activity in children, the fast spiky spindle variant, central fast activity, and diffuse paroxysmal or c

[Assessment of the brain functional state in pathological gamblers with a complex of neurophysiological methods].

A diagnosis of pathological gambling met ICD-10 and DSM-IV criteria. Based on the electroencephalographic data, two types of disturbances of electric activity were singled out: (1) abnormalities of amplitude and frequency characteristics of alpha-rhythm and (2) the disturbance of mechanisms of synchronized slow waves generating associated with the alpha-rhythm abnormalities. Despite the fact that patients did not abuse drugs, they had changes similar to those in drug addicts, i.e. the increase of index and power of beta-rhythm, abnormalities of amplitude and frequency characteristics of alpha-

Development of the EEG from 5 months to 4 years of age.

OBJECTIVES: This report provides a systematic longitudinal analysis of the EEG from infancy into early childhood. Particular emphasis is placed on the empirical confirmation of a 6-9 Hz alpha-range frequency band that has previously been used in the infant EEG literature. METHODS: EEG data in 1-Hz bins from 3 to 12 Hz were analyzed from a longitudinal sample of 29 participants at 5, 10, 14, 24, and 51 months of age. RESULTS: Inspection of power spectra averaged across the whole sample indicated the emergence of a peak in the 6-9 Hz range across multiple scalp regions. Coding of peaks in the

Neuromagnetic measurement of unilateral temporo-parietal theta rhythm in patients with internal carotid artery occlusive disease.

Rhythmic theta activity detected by electroencephalography (EEG) may be correlated with cerebrovascular brain diseases. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) has higher sensitivity and spatial resolution than conventional scalp EEG, so may be a better method to detect theta rhythm in patients with internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusive disease. Simultaneous EEG and MEG were performed in the awake state in 48 patients with unilateral (n = 42) or bilateral (n = 6) stenotic lesions (more than 60% occlusion) of the ICA (n = 47) or middle cerebral artery (n = 7), and in 27 age-matched healthy normal subjec

[Electroencephalographic characteristics of cerebral atherosclerosis in patients of different ages].

On the basis of clinical and EEG studies of 500 patients from the age of 45-105 with diffuse cerebral atherosclerosis the author comes to the following conclusion. With an intensification of atherosclerosis there is an increase of alpha-rhythm disorganization, a slowing down of the frequency, a drop in the amplitude and index of alpha-rhythms, a decrease in the electrical brain reactivity with an increase of delta-and theta-waves. It is shown that the EEG changes are to a greater extent determined by the severity of cerebral atherosclerosis than by age factors. Normal variants of the EEG in pa

[Bioelectrical activity of the brain in paroxysmal and chronic forms of primary headache].

Eighty-three patients suffering from primary headache (HA) were studied. Migraine was diagnosed in 52 (migraine with aura--8, migraine without aura--30, transformed migraine--14) and headache of tension--in 31 patients. EEG was registered before treatment, using evaluation by methods of visual and spectral analyses. The EEGs of all the patients were characterized by diffuse bioelectrical activity changes. In patients with headache of tension (episodic and chronic), the reduction of alpha rhythm with simultaneous increase of other frequency bands were the main EEG features. In migraine with- an

[Brain biopotential mapping in emotional and cognitive pathology].

The EEG rhythms spectral power and intracortical connections were studied in depressive and schizophrenic patients in four schematically outlined main cortical quadrants. In depressive patients two cortical quadrants--right anterior and left posterior ones appeared to be predominantly involved in negative emotions regulation. Alpha-rhythm spectral power and cortical connections in these areas were decreased, pointing to their relative hyperactivation and functional disturbances. Schizophrenics patients were divided into two groups--with the predominance of "positive" and "negative" symptoms. I

Mu rhythm: State of the art with special focus on cerebral palsy.

Various specific early rehabilitation strategies are proposed to decrease functional disabilities in patients with cerebral palsy (CP). These strategies are thought to favour the mechanisms of brain plasticity that take place after brain injury. However, the level of evidence is low. Markers of brain plasticity would favour validation of these rehabilitation programs. In this paper, we consider the study of mu rhythm for this goal by describing the characteristics of mu rhythm in adults and children with typical development, then review the current literature on mu rhythm in CP. Mu rhythm is c

Unilateral alpha subharmonics: a case report.

Occipital alpha subharmonics are a normal EEG variant. Unilateral occipital slowing, however, is associated with focal dysfunction of that particular side. We report a 10-year-old girl with the incidental EEG finding of unilateral occipital slowing. MRI of her brain was completely normal and on long-term follow up she remained healthy. Based on her clinical history, normal MRI of brain, and the character of the slow posterior rhythms, we conclude that unilateral slow alpha rhythm can be a normal variant akin to alpha subharmonics.

Rhythm patterns of basic brain bioelectric activity in workers chronically exposed to carbon disulfide.

The work aimed at defining the pattern and frequency of rhythm disturbances in basic brain bioelectric activity in EEG recordings, routinely regarded as normal, in workers exposed to chronic carbon disulfide (CS2) poisoning, without detected symptoms of organic lesions in the nervous system. The study covered 188 viscose spinners occupationally exposed to changing concentrations of CS2 vapours whose mean annual results of measurements ranged between 10 and 35 mg/m3, and the mean individual exposure fell within the range of 9.9-41.6 mg/m3 (mean--25.8 mg/m3). The frequency of alpha rhythm was an

Finding thalamic BOLD correlates to posterior alpha EEG.

Oscillatory electrical brain activity in the alpha (8-13 Hz) band is a prominent feature of human electroencephalography (EEG) during alert wakefulness, and is commonly thought to arise primarily from the occipital and parietal parts of the cortex. While the thalamus is considered to play a supportive role in the generation and modulation of cortical alpha rhythms, its precise function remains controversial and incompletely understood. To address this, we evaluated the correlation between the blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) signals in the t

The circadian rhythm of synthesis and catabolism of cholesterol.

The circadian rhythms of HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol-7 alpha-hydroxylase (low values, during light, rising in the evening with maximum at 12.00 p.m.) are investigated in rats under diverse conditions. Intragastral administration of cholestyramine (bile acid-absorbing resin) leads to an increased rhythm of both enzymes. Feeding of cholic acid (or cholesterol) reduces the activity of both enzymes (of HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol-7 alpha-hydroxylase, respectively). In starved rats enzyme activity and time of day is proportional to the metabolism of a substrate.ies are lowered, too; a d

[The EEG rhythms and psychological indices of emotions in reactive depression].

Power and topographic distribution of the EEG rhythms (delta, theta 1, theta 2, alpha, beta 1, and beta 2) were compared with the reactive and personal anxiety levels (by Spilberger) and parameters of subjective emotional semantic space (obtained by the method of subjective scaling). A general decrease in the EEG power was observed in reactive depression, with the exception of the theta-rhythm, the power of which was higher than that in healthy persons. The increase in the theta 2 power in depression was correlated with activation of the right frontal area ("the zone of negative emotions"), an

Splitting of the locomotor activity rhythm in rats by exposure to continuous light.

Female rats exposed to low intensities (0.1-1.5 lx) of continuous light (LL), displayed regular estrous cycles and free-running circadian rhythms of locomotor activity. In most rats, as the intensity of LL was increased to greater than 2.0 lx, components within the active portion (alpha) of the locomotor rhythm remained synchronized as the periodicity of the rhythm lengthened. However, in a few rats alpha split into two components; one of which free-ran with a period shorter than 24 h, while the other free-ran with a period longer than 24 h. As soon as the two components became maximally separ

Resting-state electroencephalographic rhythms depend on sex in patients with dementia due to Parkinson's and Lewy Body diseases: An exploratory study.

Parkinson's disease with dementia (PDD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) are more prevalent in males than females. Furthermore, they typically showed abnormally high delta (< 4 Hz) and low alpha (8-10 Hz) rhythms from resting-state electroencephalographic (rsEEG) activity. Here, we hypothesized that those abnormalities may depend on the patient's sex. An international database provided clinical-demographic-rsEEG datasets for cognitively unimpaired older (Healthy; N = 49; 24 females), PDD (N = 39; 13 females), and DLB (N = 38; 15 females) participants. Each group was stratified into matched
