BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PLHIV) are at a high risk of developing HPV-related cancers. HPV-related malignancies occur frequently and/or are high among PLHIV, with cervical cancer as a designated AIDS-defining condition. We aimed to explore the evidence on the interplay of HIV and HPV-related cancers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).
METHODS: The scoping review was guided by Arksey and O'Malley's framework. We searched for literature from the following databases: PubMed; World Health Organization (WHO) Library; Science Direct; Google Scholar and EBSCOhost (Academic search complete, Health

Invasive cervical cancer is a common problem worldwide and while rates of squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix (SCC) have been declining with the implementation of community screening programs, adenocarcinoma of the cervix (ADC) has not shown a similar response to screening. At this time, the two entities are tested for and treated with the same clinical algorithms, namely gynecologic cytology and molecular testing for HPV DNA. However, ADC arises more proximally within the cervical canal and frequently occurs below the superficial mucosal lining, precluding it from being easily diagnosed wit

Tattoos are a form of decorative body art in which pigment dyes of different colors are inoculated into the skin. It is estimated that 15-25% of general population has one or more tattoos (1), and the reasons for the popularity of this procedure may include greater social acceptance, aesthetic appeal, or perhaps the option of using laser removal techniques to eliminate unwanted tattoos. Even though modern professional tattoos are usually performed in sterile conditions, complications still occur, and with increasing numbers of people getting tattoos, the incidence of tattoo-associated side-eff

Human papilloma virus (HPV) is the causative agent for a variety of cutaneous lesions including verruca vulgaris (VV) and epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EDV). There are more than 200 known genotypes of HPV, and specific HPV types are associated with different clinical manifestations and malignant potentials. Herein, we describe a case of a 43-year-old immunocompetent woman who presented with morphologically distinct lesions that were most consistent with EDV on clinical examination. However, further histopathological and viral analysis confirmed the lesions as HPV-57-positive VV. The risk of

Human papillomavirus (HPV)-related multiphenotypic sinonasal carcinoma (HMSC) is newly suggested and characterized by HPV-related tumors. HMSC has a relatively good prognosis. No cases of brain invasion have been reported to date. We encountered a case of brain invasion by HMSC, in which we assessed the effectiveness of radiotherapy in comparison with biopsy and autopsy. A 69-year-old man was referred to a hospital three months after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Contrast magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tumor in the ethmoid sinus involving the brain. We performed transnasal biopsy and

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Recent trends have shown a decline in the rates of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cervical cancer in the vaccinated population but there has been a spike in the HPV-associated oropharyngeal, anal and penile cancers in the majority of the unvaccinated population which are young and middle-aged males. Indigenous populations at an international level carry a disproportionate burden of most diseases. The aim of this meta-analysis was to ascertain the worldwide prevalence of HPV infection in Indigenous populations stratified by sex and site and to document the most common

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Immunosuppression is a known risk factor for cervical cancer. Women with rheumatic conditions are immunosuppressed due to the disease and the treatments. One of the main risk factors for this neoplasm is the lack of adherence to early detection programmes for human papillomavirus. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the adherence to the screening programme of patients in the Rheumatology Clinic, as well as to evaluate the prevalence of cervical lesions and their association with the different disease characteristics and the treatments received.
METHODS: A

In this issue of Cell, Casanova and colleagues examine three family members with a mutation that results in deficiency of the T cell co-stimulatory molecule CD28. These patients exhibit clinical symptoms due to human papillomavirus-2 and -4 infections, show increased levels of Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegalovirus in the blood, and respond poorly to vaccines.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a multilevel intervention using national partnerships on human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rates.
METHODS: The American Cancer Society's Vaccinate Adolescents against Cancer program is a multilevel intervention focusing on systems and providers. The 2017 cohort introduced national partnerships to deliver intervention elements and Maintenance of Certification and continuing medical education credits for physicians. Eleven federally qualified health center (FQHC) systems completed interventions in 2017. Interventions included provider training an

Inverted papillomas are rare tumors in the pediatric population and have not been reported in children less than two years. These tumors may produce respiratory distress in patients, particularly if they ectopically occur in the airway. Human papilloma virus is one of the known etiologies for many head and neck neoplasms including inverted papillomas and squamous papillomas. We report a child who was surgically treated at fifteen months of age for inverted papilloma of the pharynx who subsequently developed squamous papilloma of the larynx which persisted as a recurrent respiratory papillomato

INTRODUCTION: This study explores how human papillomavirus vaccination initiation and completion among men and women aged 18-34 years varies by geographic region.
METHODS: Data from the 2015-2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were analyzed. Geographic regions for the selected states were defined as South, Northeast, and Midwest/West. Human papillomavirus vaccination initiation was defined as receipt of ≥1 dose, and completion was defined as receipt of ≥3 doses. Weighted, multivariable logistic regression models estimated the association between geographic region and vaccine uptak

The potential problems of DNA extraction from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue samples and amplification efficiency of Human papilloma virus (HPV) may occur in the molecular studies of head and neck squamous carcinoma (HNSCC). The aim of this study was to compare HPV detection rate in FFPE tissues of oral, oropharyngeal, hypopharyngeal, and laryngeal cancers using two silica-based extraction kits and three amplification methods. A total of 50 FFPE specimens from HNSCC tissues were analyzed. The quality and quantity of the extracted DNA were tested by spectrophotometry. HPV DNA wa

OBJECTIVE: Human papillomavirus (HPV) immunization rates among US adolescents are low. Missed opportunities (MOs) for HPV vaccination are common. School-based health centers (SBHCs) have potential to boost HPV vaccination, but their role in addressing MOs has not been examined.
METHODS: We implemented a multicomponent intervention, consisting of 3 immunization process workflow modifications combined with provider performance feedback, in 2 Los Angeles area SBHCs and conducted a pre/post evaluation of MOs. Our primary outcome was SBHC-based MOs for HPV vaccination during all visits, including

STUDY QUESTION: What is the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in semen?
SUMMARY ANSWER: HPV is present in the semen of asymptomatic men, with a pooled prevalence in a random effects meta-analysis of populations seeking fertility evaluation/treatment of 16%, versus 10% in other populations.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The main risk of donor insemination (DI) is known to be contamination with an infectious agent. HPV is the necessary cause of cervical cancer, and plays an etiologic role in other anogenital cancers. Although it is known to be prevalent and sexually transmitted, donor semen sp
