This study investigated the effects of PCE and 2-CP co-contamination on growth of microbial community in terms of enzymatic activity and microbial diversity in activated sludge. Results showed that the activities of three key enzymes (dehydrogenase, phosphatase and urease) decreased significantly when PCE (in the range of 5-150 mg/L) was mixed with 2-CP (in the range of 25-150 mg/L). Especially, activity of dehydrogenase decreased by more than 93% as the concentration of PCE and 2-CP both reached 150 mg/L. PCR-DGGE revealed that short-term exposure with PCE and 2-CP did not lead to shift in th

Inquilinus limosus belongs to the class of the Alphaproteobacteria and was first described in 2002. So far, the species has mainly been isolated from respiratory specimens of patients with cystic fibrosis. A main characteristic of Inquilinus limosus is the prolonged time until bacterial colony growth is detectable. As the defined incubation times in many laboratories are too short to detect the growth of Inquilinus limosus, it is likely that the species is less frequently detected in the clinical setting than it actually occurs. This also explains why there are currently only very few data on

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. While cirrhosis is the main risk factor for HCC, the factors influencing progression from cirrhosis to HCC remain largely unknown. Gut microbiota plays a key role in liver diseases; however, its association with HCC remains elusive. This study aimed to elucidate microbial differences between patients with HCC-associated cirrhosis (HCC-cirrhosis) and cirrhotic patients without HCC and healthy volunteers and to explore the associations between diet, lifestyle, and the microbiome of these patients. Brucella species are intracellular bacterial pathogens that cause brucellosis, one of the most common zoonoses worldwide. This review traces how Brucella, first discovered in the 19th century through investigations of human and bovine disease, became a modern experimental model system. Work on Brucella has illuminated how intracellular bacteria evade and adapt to host defenses and how they remodel host cell biology to establish a replicative niche. It has also yielded insights that extend beyond pathogenesis into bacterial cell envelope architecture and development. Though long regarded as a s

The phycosphere, the organic-rich microenvironment surrounding phytoplankton cells, mediates interactions between algae and other microorganisms, mainly prokaryotes. We investigated associations between Chaetoceros spp., one of the most abundant diatom genera in coastal waters, and particle-attached prokaryotic communities. Monthly samples were collected from October 2017 to September 2018 at a fixed station in the Gulf of Naples (Italy). Light microscopy counts of Chaetoceros were integrated with 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding data, and bipartite network analyses were applied to infer putative s

During growth and division, the bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan (PG) is remodelled, resulting in the liberation of PG muropeptides which are typically reinternalized and recycled. Bacteria belonging to the Rhizobiales and Rhodobacterales orders of the Alphaproteobacteria lack the muropeptide transporter AmpG, despite having other key PG recycling enzymes. Here, we show that an alternative transporter, YejBEF-YepA, takes over this role in the Rhizobiales phytopathogen Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Muropeptide import by YejBEF-YepA governs expression of the β-lactamase AmpC in A. tumefaciens, con

Acetic acid bacteria (AAB) are a group of gram-negative, obligate aerobic bacteria within the Acetobacteraceae family of the alphaproteobacteria class, which are distributed in a wide variety of different natural sources that are rich in sugar and alcohols, as well as in several traditionally fermented foods. Their versatile capabilities are not limited to producing acetic acid and brewing vinegar, as their names suggest. They can also be used for fixing nitrogen, yielding pigments and exopolysaccharides (EPS), and most typically, producing a variety of aldehydes, ketones and other organic aci

According to previous observational researches and clinical trials, the gut microbiota is related to prostate diseases. However, the potential association between gut microbiota and prostate disorders is still uncertain. We first identified groups of gut microbiota based on the phylum, class, order, family, and genus levels from consortium MiBioGen. And we acquired prostate diseases statistics from the FINNGEN study and PRACTICAL consortium. Next, two-sample Mendelian randomization was used to investigate the potential associations between three prevalent prostate disease and gut microbiota. I

Agave lechuguilla is a widely distributed plant in arid ecosystems. It has been suggested that its microbiome is partially responsible for its great adaptability to the oligotrophic environments of the Chihuahuan Desert. To lead the recruitment of beneficial rhizobacteria, the root exudates are essential; however, the amino acids contained within these compounds had been largely overlooked. Thus, we investigated how the variations of amino acids in the rhizosphere at different growth stages of A. lechuguilla affect the rhizobacterial community composition, its functions, and activity of the be

Establishment of rhizobium-legume symbiosis requires a series of mutual authentication, which might involve bacterial evasion of host defense. One such evasion-related genes is Sinorhizobium meliloti bacA that is essential for bacteroid formation. BacA is a transmembrane protein highly similar to Escherichia coli SbmA, a predicted transporter, and has homologs even in animal pathogens, such as Brucella abortus in which the homolog contributes to effective survival in host macrophages. Despite such a significance in host-microbe interactions, studies on rhizobial BacA have been mostly performed

BACKGROUND: Alpha proteobacteria are one of the largest and most extensively studied groups within bacteria. However, for these bacteria as a whole and for all of its major subgroups (viz. Rhizobiales, Rhodobacterales, Rhodospirillales, Rickettsiales, Sphingomonadales and Caulobacterales), very few or no distinctive molecular or biochemical characteristics are known.
RESULTS: We have carried out comprehensive phylogenomic analyses by means of Blastp and PSI-Blast searches on the open reading frames in the genomes of several alpha-proteobacteria (viz. Bradyrhizobium japonicum, Brucella suis, C

The Rickettsiales, a genetically diverse group of the alpha-Proteobacteria, include major mammalian pathogens, such as the agents of epidemic typhus, scrub typhus, ehrlichioses and heartwater disease. Sequenced genomes of this bacterial order have provided exciting insights into reductive genome evolution, antigenic variation and host cell manipulation. Recent results suggest that human pathogens emerged relatively late in the evolution of the Rickettsiales. Surprisingly, there is no association between pathogenicity and the acquisition of novel virulence genes. Here, we explore the genomic di

The SoxAX complex of the bacterium Rhodovulum sulfidophilum is a heterodimeric c-type cytochrome that plays an essential role in photosynthetic thiosulfate and sulfide oxidation. The three heme sites of SoxAX have been analyzed using electronic absorption, electron paramagnetic resonance, and magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopies. Heme-3 in the ferric state is characterized by a Large g(max) EPR signal and has histidine and methionine axial heme iron ligands which are retained on reduction to the ferrous state. Hemes-1 and -2 both have thiolate plus nitrogenous ligand sets in the ferric s

Constructed wetlands (CWs) can effectively treat landfill leachate (LL). However, there is limited research on the removal of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) refractory organics during LL treatment in CWs. In this study, multi-stage subsurface flow CWs was used to treat LL, and the removal fate of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in CWs was investigated. The structural differences between plant roots and substrate microbial communities were compared and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) metabolic pathway of organic matter was analyzed base

Bartonella are hemotropic bacteria responsible for emerging zoonoses. These heme auxotroph alphaproteobacteria must import heme for their growth, since they cannot synthesize it. To import exogenous heme, Bartonella genomes encode for a complete heme uptake system enabling transportation of this compound into the cytoplasm and degrading it to release iron. In addition, these bacteria encode for four or five outer membrane heme binding proteins (Hbps). The structural genes of these highly homologous proteins are expressed differently depending on oxygen, temperature and heme concentrations. The

A disease-like syndrome is currently affecting a large percentage of the Ianthella basta populations from the Great Barrier Reef and central Torres Strait. Symptoms of the syndrome include discolored, necrotic spots leading to tissue degradation, exposure of the skeletal fibers, and disruption of the choanocyte chambers. To ascertain the role of microbes in the disease process, a comprehensive comparison of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other eukaryotes was performed in healthy and diseased sponges using multiple techniques. A low diversity of microbes was observed in both healthy and diseased

The Asian citrus psyllid Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae) is a serious pest worldwide, transmitting Candidatus Liberibacter spp. (Alphaproteobacteria), the causative agents of a devastating citrus disease known as huanglongbing or greening disease. In a symbiotic organ called the bacteriome, D. citri possesses an organelle-like defensive symbiont, Candidatus Profftella armatura (Betaproteobacteria), and a nutritional symbiont, Ca. Carsonella ruddii (Gammaproteobacteria). Drastically reduced symbiont genomes and metabolic complementarity among the symbionts and D. citri indicate

Ten Gram-negative, rod-shaped and motile bacterial strains were isolated from spider crab (M27.10, M27.11a, F36.1, F36.4, M56.1, F76.17b, M146.1, M166.3 and M166.6) and pullet carpet shell clam (SBRF 1.10) collected in the coast of Galicia. Analyses of the 16S rRNA genes showed that the strains belong to the genus Kiloniella and have high similarity with the species Kiloniella spongiae (99.44-99.86%) and Kiloniella litopenaei (99.0-99.5%). Strains M56.1T (=CECT 9195, =LMG 29925), M146.1 (=CECT 9193, =LMG 29926) and SBRF 1.10 (=CECT 9194, =LMG 29927) were selected on the basis of genotyping by

In Drosophila melanogaster, weak incompatibility in crosses between infected and uninfected strains is associated with a Wolbachia microorganism. Crosses between infected males and uninfected females show a reduction (15-30%) in egg hatch. Progeny tests indicated that the infection is widespread in Australian D. melanogaster populations and that populations are polymorphic for the presence of the infection. The infection status of 266 lines from 12 populations along the eastern coast of Australia was determined by 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining of embryos. All populations contai

Bacteria of the genus Bartonella, a member of the Alphaproteobacteria, are fastidious, Gram-negative, aerobic bacilli that comprise numerous species, subspecies, and genotypes. Bartonella henselae, with a worldwide distribution, infects cats, dogs, horses, humans, and other mammals. Diagnostically, direct detection of Bartonella henselae in patient blood specimens by culture or molecular methods is required to confirm infection with this bacterium. Enrichment blood culture combined with quantitative PCR (qPCR) or ddPCR enhances the sensitivity of direct detection. The addition of sheep blood t
