In Switzerland, most of the emergency stations receive patients with high altitude caused illnesses. The most commons ones are acute mountain sickness, high-altitude cerebral edema and high-altitude pulmonary edema. These sicknesses are caused by a dysregulation of altitude adaptating mechanism While acute mountain sickness spontaneously improves upon arrival at lower altitudes, high-altitude cerebral and pulmonary edema present with non-specific neurological or respiratory symptoms, with a wide differential diagnosis, and require specific management.

As high altitude travel increases, acute mountain sickness (AMS) and life threatening high altitude cerebral oedema (HACE) are becoming more prevalent. Acute mountain sickness occurs in 45% of lowlanders above 4250 m. Predisposing factors are still unknown and its development is more complex than the original "tight fit" hypothesis. This review examines evidence relating to a possible role of the blood brain barrier in AMS as suggested by MRI studies. Underlying mechanisms may involve vascular endothelial growth factor and free radicals in addition to increases in hydrostatic pressure. An incr

Acute mountain sickness (AMS), high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), and high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE) are three common forms of altitude sickness. These conditions can be life-threatening, with symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, and headaches. Ascending to high elevations increases the likelihood of developing these conditions, with some individuals adapting quickly while others need to descend. Early acclimatization is beneficial for avoiding AMS and HACE, but it takes weeks to months to improve job performance and performance at high altitudes. HAPE is a leading cause of mortality from

Altitude illness affects 25 to 85 percent of travelers to high altitudes, depending on their rate of ascent, home altitude, individual susceptibility, and other risk factors. Acute mountain sickness is the most common presentation of altitude illness and typically causes headache and malaise within six to 12 hours of gaining altitude. It may progress to high-altitude cerebral edema in some persons. Onset is heralded by worsening symptoms of acute mountain sickness, progressing to ataxia and eventually to coma and death if not treated. High-altitude pulmonary edema is uncommon, but is the leadi

CONTEXT: Mining operations conducted at high altitudes provide health challenges for workers as well as for medical personnel.
OBJECTIVE: To review the literature regarding adverse health effects and toxic exposures that may be associated with mining operations conducted at altitude and to discuss pre-placement screening, acclimatization issues, and on-site surveillance strategies.
METHODS: We used the Ovid ( http://ovidsp.tx.ovid.com ) search engine to conduct a MEDLINE search for "coal mining" or "mining" and "altitude sickness" or "altitude" and a second MEDLINE search for "occupational d

At altitudes higher than the threshold altitude of 2,500 m, high-altitude diseases may occur, usually after a delay of 6 to 12 hours. Apart from the headache associated with acute mountain sickness, life-threatening cerebral edema may develop. High-altitude pulmonary edema is a non-cardiac edema that often precedes acute mountain sickness. The most important preventive measure is a slow ascent. In the case of mountain sickness a prophylactic effect can be achieved with acetazolamide or dexamethasone possible, while for high-altitude pulmonary edema, nifedipine is the first-choice drug. Altitude physiology began with Paul Bert in 1878. Chronic mountain sickness (CMS) was defined by Carlos Monge in the 1940s in the Peruvian Andes as consisting of excess polycythemia. Hurtado et al performed studies in the Peruvian Andes in the 1950s to 1960s which defined acclimatization in healthy altitude natives, including polycythemia, moderate pulmonary hypertension, and low systemic blood pressure (BP). Electrocardiographic changes of right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH) were noted. Acclimatization of newcomers to altitude involves hyperventilation stimulated by hypoxia and is usually ben

High Alt Med Biol. 26:109-117, 2025.-There is interest among technical, expedition, commercial, and military divers in expanding diving operations to high altitude. However, altitude diving presents unique challenges including acclimatization, increased decompression sickness (DCS) risk, and logistical and equipment considerations. Divers must plan altitude acclimatization strategies conservatively to reduce ri

Acute exposure to altitude principally encompasses aviation and space activities. These environments can be associated with very acute changes in pressure, oxygenation and temperature due to rates and magnitude of ascent that are not experienced in more chronic exposure such as mountaineering. The four key physiological challenges during acute exposure to altitude are: hypoxia (and hyperventilation), gas volume changes, decompression sickness and cold. The brief nature of aviation exposure to altitude provides little opportunity for acclimatisation, leading to markedly different effects when a

More and more people travel to high altitudes, some develop mountain sickness, a possible life-threatening condition. The most common and benign case of mountain sickness is acute mountain sicknes, this condition is easily treatable by descending or low dose aceatazolamide. Treatment is important to avoid development to the more severe cases of mountain sickness high-altitude cerebral oedema and high-altitude pulmonary oedema. These conditions require early recognition and treatment. This review gives an overview of available treatment of these conditions and how to avoid them in the first pla

Purpose: To report a case of high-altitude cerebral edema and high-altitude retinopathy resulting in persistent neurologic and long-term visual sequelae following inadequate acclimatization. Methods: A single case was reviewed. Results: A 32-year-old man developed high-altitude sickness during a hike in the Andes, most likely due to inadequate acclimatization during ascent. He was diagnosed with high-altitude cerebral edema and high-altitude retinopathy. Neurologic deficits persisted during the 4-day stay at high altitude but resolved immediately after descent below 4300 m; however, multiple c

PURPOSE: Acute mountain sickness commonly occurs following ascent to high altitude and is aggravated following sleep. Cephalad fluid shifts have been implicated. We hypothesized that sleeping with the upper body elevated by 30º reduces the risk of acute mountain sickness.
METHODS: In a pragmatic, randomized, observer-blinded field study at 4554 meters altitude, we investigated 134 adults aged 18-70 years with a Lake Louise score between 3 and 12 points on the evening of their arrival at the altitude. The individuals were exposed to sleeping on an inflatable cushion elevating the upper body by

Background: In human beings exposed to high altitude, cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) revealed alterations ranging from subclinical cerebral edema formation to subtle brain abnormalities. Yet, brain structure after adaptation to high altitude and their recovery after return to lowlands have been rarely investigated. We, therefore, examined 10 healthy individuals by cMRI before, 12 hours after descent (R + 12h), and again 3.5 months (R + 3.5m) after a 7-day high altitude exposure at 4554 m. Results: After their 3-day lasting, stepwise ascent to 4554 m, all subjects suffered acute mou

Barometric pressure falls with increasing altitude and consequently there is a reduction in the partial pressure of oxygen resulting in a hypoxic challenge to any individual ascending to altitude. A spectrum of high altitude illnesses can occur when the hypoxic stress outstrips the subject's ability to acclimatize. Acute altitude-related problems consist of the common syndrome of acute mountain sickness, which is relatively benign and usually self-limiting, and the rarer, more serious syndromes of high-altitude cerebral edema and high-altitude pulmonary edema. A common feature of acute altitud

Background. Symptoms of mountain sickness are due to hypoxia of the brain. The pathogenesis is complex, but acid-base disturbances certainly play a role. When arterial oxygen levels drop, hyperventilation is induced, resulting in a respiratory alkalosis. However, this alkalosis inhibits the hyperventilation necessary for maintaining oxygen pressure. We present a case of a patient with symptoms of mountain sickness at relatively low altitudes, who appeared to have Conn's syndrome (primary hyperaldosteronism). Case. A 61-year-old male with hypokalaemic hypertension presented with symptoms of mou

High altitude retinopathy (HAR) is a common ocular disorder that occurs on ascent to high altitude. There are many clinical symptoms, retinal vascular dilatation, retinal edema and hemorrhage are common. These usually do not or slightly affect vision; rarely, severe cases develop serious or permanent vision loss. At present, the research progress of HAR mainly focuses on hemodynamic changes, blood-retinal barrier damage, oxidative stress and inflammatory response. Although the related studies on HAR are limited, it shows that HAR still belongs to hypoxia, and hypobaric hypoxia plays an aggrava

BACKGROUND: High altitude pilgrims typically ascend rapidly, are not well prepared for the austere environment and tend to have multiple co-morbidities. Here, we list the trend of altitude and other illnesses who visited Humla district hospital (2,950 meters) following very rapid ascent to Kailash Mansarovar (4,500 meters).
METHODS: A prospective study was conducted among 55 patients at the Humla District Hospital from September 2019 - August 2022. Patients who fell ill during pilgrimage and brought to the hospital were included. The patients were assessed with medical history and clinical ex

Two clinical syndromes, acute and chronic mountain sickness, have traditionally been associated with high altitude. Recently, two separate entities of subacute nature have been described in infants and adults. In this paper, we review the published literature on these conditions. Subacute infantile mountain sickness is a condition seen predominantly in Han Chinese infants living in Tibet, although it has been described in other high altitude communities as well. It came into prominence only after the large-scale migration of Chinese population from the low altitude of mainland China to the hig
