The blood donation experience: self-reported motives and obstacles for donating blood.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to investigate motives for donating blood as well as difficulties and obstacles associated with blood donation as perceived by the donors themselves. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six hundred consecutive blood donors (i.e. all blood donors with a history of at least one previous whole blood donation attending, during nine working days, the Blood Centre of Umeå University Hospital) received a self-administered questionnaire that contained questions aimed at elucidating motives for donating blood (general motives for donating blood, specific motives

Moral Inequity in Organ Donation: An Examination of Age-Based Denial.

The decision to donate an organ is often the decision to save a loved one's life. Frequently recognized as an ultimate act of altruism, a person's choice to donate is embedded in their right to make decisions about their own body and well-being, free of coercion. To ensure donors are truly acting out of altruism, transplant professionals will not allow someone to donate if there are concerns of duress or inability to consent. Although the evaluation of potential donors is well-intentioned and necessary, stigma and assumptions about young adults can sometimes lead to their being denied the oppo

How altruistic organ donation may be (intrinsically) bad.

It has traditionally been assumed that organ donation must be altruistic, though the necessity of altruistic motivations has recently been questioned. Few, however, have questioned whether altruism is always a good motive. This paper considers the possibility that excessive altruism, or self-abnegation, may be intrinsically bad. How this may be so is illustrated with reference to Tom Hurka's account of the value of attitudes, which suggests that disproportionate love of one's own good-either excessive or deficient-is intrinsically bad. Whether or not we accept the details of this account, reco

Psychosocial stress and cardiovascular disease: how to heal a broken heart.

Psychosocial stress induces adverse changes in autonomic tone accounting for substantial but modifiable cardiovascular risk. Various factors, including depression, social isolation, hostility and anxiety increase cardiovascular risk, whereas social support, altruism, faith and optimism reduce risk.

Therapeutic Groups to Help People Forgive Others: A Case Study.

Most people have been harmed by another at some point in their lives. Many of these hurts linger in the lives of those who were hurt, through anger, fear, and rumination. Forgiving others, when it is safe and prudent to do so, can be one route toward healing these past hurts. Group therapy has specific strengths that might help people to effectively forgive others. One of those strengths is the creation of therapeutic factors. In the current paper we discuss how group forgiveness interventions and the development of three specific therapeutic factors (universality, cohesion, and altruism) can

The analytic utility of distinguishing fighting from dying.

Fighting and dying, or what Whitehouse calls "out-group hostility" and "extreme self-sacrifice," are not conceptually overlapping, but in fact are highly distinguishable, both theoretically and empirically. I present empirical evidence from a reanalysis of Ginges et al. (2009, Study 4), demonstrating the potentially inverse relationship between "parochial hostility" - fighting and "sacrificial altruism" - "and" dying.

Social evolution: Limb amputation prevents infection in ants.

Social insect workers, renowned for their altruism, are frequently perceived as 'disposable'. A new study finds that ants amputate the limbs of nestmates, which saves them from infection, and indicates that worker care is as critical to colony success as sacrifice.

Experiences of face mask use during the COVID-19 pandemic: A qualitative study.

The use of face masks and coverings has been a central component of efforts to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and has been legally mandated in some countries. Most academic studies to date, however, have focussed primarily on its effectiveness in reducing SARS-CoV-2 transmission, largely neglecting the social dimensions of mask mandates. In this narrative interview-based study, we consider experiences of face masks, with a particular focus on groups considered to be at a potential disadvantage from compulsory masking. Drawing on 40 telephone, video-call and e-mail interviews, we

Cooperation and conflict: field experiments in Northern Ireland.

The idea that cohesive groups, in which individuals help each other, have a competitive advantage over groups composed of selfish individuals has been widely suggested as an explanation for the evolution of cooperation in humans. Recent theoretical models propose the coevolution of parochial altruism and intergroup conflict, when in-group altruism and out-group hostility contribute to the group's success in these conflicts. However, the few empirical attempts to test this hypothesis do not use natural groups and conflate measures of in-group and unbiased cooperative behaviour. We conducted fie

A systematic review of the amount of water per person per day needed to prevent morbidity and mortality in (post-)disaster settings.

BACKGROUND: In order to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of humanitarian efforts, minimum standards for humanitarian assistance and key indicators, showing whether a standard has been attained, have been developed. However, many of these standards and indicators are based on a consensus on best practices and experiences in humanitarian response, because relevant evidence on the impact of humanitarian interventions is often lacking. OBJECTIVES: One important example of a standard in humanitarian aid in a disaster setting is "water quantity." The accompanying indicator states how many l

Organ donors and nondonors. An American dilemma.

The principal motive for organ donation in the United States remains altruism. Surveys suggest that if the life-threatening and critical shortage of cadaveric donor organs were appropriately understood by the public, an altruistic response would lead to increased donation. However, despite intense educational efforts appealing to altruism, cadaveric organ donation has not increased substantially while the number of patients in need of a life-saving organ has grown markedly. To understand why organ donation has not increased, a telephone survey and focus group sessions of volunteers who were ei

What Can Providers' Motivations Tell Us About Healthcare Quality?

Agency theory suggests that variation in providers' quality of care may be explained by their heterogeneous motivations. We provide novel empirical evidence on the links between different sources of provider motivation and quality of care by combining a unique 4-year survey dataset on Danish general practitioners' motivations with quality indicators and control variables from rich register data. Using a within-between regression specification, we estimate the associations between two key sources of motivation (financial motivation and non-paternalistic altruism toward patients) and seven quali

A bridge between hearts: mutual organ donation by Arabs and Jews in Israel.

BACKGROUND: The availability of organ transplants depends largely on the will of the donor families. Given the current state of affairs in Israel, the authors evaluated the stance of Jews and Arabs toward mutual organ donations. METHODS: Between October 1997 and December 1999, there were 4.8 million Jews and 1.09 million Arabs living in Israel. Data gathered from 22 general hospitals for this period yielded 373 potential organ donors and 171 families (45.8%) that consented to the procedure. Actual donation was obtained from 157 patients. The authors examined the characteristics of the potenti

The girl at the end of the world - a reflection on humanitarian and care work in Barranquitas, Venezuela.

This piece recounts the deeply personal journey of the author (Alex) in supporting families affected by Huntington's Disease (HD) in Barranquitas, Venezuela. The author draws a parallel between her childhood fascination with small spaces and the overlooked potential for innovation within small communities, especially Barranquitas, which played a pivotal part in the HD genetics research led by Dr Nancy Wexler in the 1980s and 1990s. The narrative details Alex's involvement with Factor-H and Habitat Luz, NGOs dedicated to aiding HD families in Latin America by providing essential resources, heal

Violence against children in humanitarian settings: A literature review of population-based approaches.

Children in humanitarian settings are thought to experience increased exposure to violence, which can impair their physical, emotional, and social development. Violence against children has important economic and social consequences for nations as a whole. The purpose of this review is to examine population-based approaches measuring violence against children in humanitarian settings. The authors reviewed prevalence studies of violence against children in humanitarian contexts appearing in peer-reviewed journals within the past twenty years. A Boolean search procedure was conducted in October

Cost-free charity facilitates dishonesty in a dice-rolling experiment.

Exploring the motivations behind collaboratively dishonest behaviour, is often done using dice-rolling experiments, where coordinated cheating increases participant pairs' earnings. Here we present a preregistered dice-rolling experiment that investigates how participants' dishonest (cheating) behaviour is influenced (i) by the dishonest (cheating) behaviour of their experimental partners and (ii) by by-product altruism (or cost-free charity) that is a direct consequence of a monetary reward in this experiment. We studied a 2 × 2 factorial design of the dice-rolling game, with the presence or

Exploring the motives of Israeli Jews who were living kidney donors to strangers.

Non-directed living donors are individuals who donate a kidney to a recipient with whom they have neither a genetic nor emotional relationship. Israel legalized this type of donation in 2008. After this law was implemented, living donations significantly expanded. The aim of this article was to determine the motivations, characteristics, and perioperative experiences of non-directed living donors in Israel. Three online questionnaires (own questionnaire, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), Rushton Self-Report Altruism Scale) were distributed to 180 Jewish kidney donors with the help of Matnat

Medical Students' Knowledge, Familiarity, and Attitudes towards Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donation: Stem Cell Donation Behaviors.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a potentially curative treatment for patients with blood disorders and genetic diseases. Approximately 70% of the HSCTs currently performed in the United States use stems cells from an unrelated donor who donated voluntarily. Medical students (MS) are a young, diverse, influential population whose willingness to engage in altruistic acts, such as donating stem cells, may be correlated with knowledge on the topic. A literature gap exists in MS perspectives towards HSCT and the bone marrow registry (BMR) and prior studies suggest that misconcepti

Coping with the death of a child: a study over time.

The usefulness of coping as an explanatory variable in parental adjustment to the death of a child is suggested in a study of 194 parents who responded to a survey shortly after their bereavement and again a year later. The most adaptive coping strategies were active and externally directed, including replacement of the child and altruism; least adaptive were escape and preoccupation with the child. Effects of participation in a self-help group are examined and discussed.

Motivations to participate in a Phase I/II HIV vaccine trial: A descriptive study from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: The search for an efficacious HIV vaccine is a global priority. To date only one HIV vaccine trial (RV144) has shown modest efficacy in a phase III trial. With existing different HIV-1 subtypes and frequent mutations, multiple trials are needed from different geographical sites particularly in sub-Saharan Africa where most HIV infections occur. Thus, motivations to participate in HIV vaccine trials among Tanzanians need to be assessed. This paper describes the motives of Police Officers who showed great interest to volunteer in HIVIS-03 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. METHODS: A descr
