A multi-centre randomized controlled trial on alveolar ridge preservation with immediate or delayed implant placement: Need for soft-tissue augmentation.

AIM: To assess the impact of the timing of implant placement following alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) on the need for soft-tissue augmentation (STA) and to identify the risk factors for horizontal and vertical soft-tissue loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with a single failing tooth in the anterior maxilla (15-25) were treated at six centres. Following tooth extraction, they were randomly allocated to the test group (immediate implant placement, IIP) or control group (delayed implant placement, DIP). ARP was performed in both groups and implants were immediately restored with an implan

Implant Treatment after Sagittal Splitting Ramus Osteotomy and Alveolar Ridge Augmentation in Patient with Mandibular Prognathism and Multiple Missing Maxillary Teeth.

An abnormal maxillomandibular ridge relationship frequently hinders oral implant treatment in patients with jaw deformities. Here, we describe a patient who was experiencing difficulty using dentures due to multiple maxillary tooth loss and mandibular prognathism. Treatment comprising sagittal splitting ramus osteotomy and alveolar ridge augmentation using bone grafts harvested from the mandibular ramus followed by implant treatment yielded good outcomes. The patient was a 47-year-old woman presenting with an unstable upper partial denture. Although prior prosthetic treatment for mandibular pr

Clinical, histological and histomorphometric evaluation of the healing of mandibular ramus bone block grafts for alveolar ridge augmentation before implant placement.

BACKGROUND: Localized bone defects in the maxilla are commonly reconstructed with autologous mono-cortical bone blocks prior to the placement of dental implants. This study presents a clinical, histological and histomorphometric analysis on the use of mandibular ramus block grafts for ridge augmentation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: mono-cortical bone blocks from the mandibular ramus were grafted in 15 patients. The bone grafts were left to heal for period varying from 3 to 9 months. Afterwards, 30 implants were inserted and bone samples were removed for subsequent histological analysis. RESULTS:

A new technique for the transcrestal sinus floor elevation and alveolar ridge augmentation with press-fit bone cylinders: a technical note.

BACKGROUND: The minimally invasive sinus floor elevation as first described by Summers is limited in the volume of augmentation that is possible. In contrast, the more invasive approach is the sinuslift of Tatum which is indicated for greater bone deficiencies. Therefore, a new technique was developed for transcrestal elevation of the sinus floor and alveolar ridge augmentation with bone dowels in press-fit technique. MATERIALS & METHODS: The crestal cortical bone is cut with a hollow grinder followed by an indirect sinus floor elevation with a plunger. The cylindrical defect is then filled w

Augmentation of the atrophic maxillary alveolar ridge with hydroxyapatite granules in a Vicryl (polyglactin 910) knitted tube and simultaneous open vestibuloplasty.

A modified technique for augmentation of the severely atrophic edentulous maxillary alveolar ridge is described. The augmentation was carried out using a knitted polyglactin 910 mesh tube filled with porous hydroxyapatite granules, the tube being inserted through the access achieved by an open vestibuloplasty. The results of an in-vivo animal study showed that the absorption of the mesh was complete between 49 and 70 days. The clinical study included 11 patients in all of whom there was severe maxillary ridge atrophy and major prosthetic problems; follow-up was for a mean of 25 months. The pro

The influence of initial alveolar ridge defect morphology on the outcome of implants in augmented atrophic posterior mandible: an exploratory retrospective study.

OBJECTIVES: Clinicians commonly consider atrophic site topography as an important determinant in deciding the augmentation technique to utilize, as well as forecasting the likelihood of success. The purpose of this retrospective study was to examine the influence of initial atrophic posterior mandible morphology on the outcome of implants placed following augmentation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 52 patients contributed 71 edentulous sites, and 185 implants were placed with mean follow-up of 37.97 months. The initial defect morphology was classified according to ABC classification (Jour

The effect of covering materials with an open wound in alveolar ridge augmentation using beta-tricalcium phosphate: an experimental study in the dog.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a grafting technique using beta-tricalcium phosphate (Β-TCP) covered with different materials in alveolar bone defects with dehiscences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In five beagle dogs, all premolars in the mandible were extracted bilaterally. After a 12-week healing period, two bone defects (length, 5 mm; width, 5 mm; depth, 7 mm) were created on each side of the mandible, and the buccal bone plate was resected. The four bone defects were randomly assigned to one of the following treatments: group 1, Β-TCP alone (TCP group); group 2, Β-TCP

A comparison of allogeneic and autogenous iliac monocortical grafts to augment the deficient alveolar ridge in a canine model. I. Clinical study.

A canine model was used to compare autogenous alveolar ridge augmentation bone grafting with allogeneic grafts. Defects were created by premolar extractions and measured by radiopaque markers. These markers were used for subsequent measurements made before and after grafting, and after animal sacrifice to evaluate the status of the grafted sites. The results were unexpected and disappointing.

Alveolar Ridge Bone Augmentation Using Carbonate Apatite Granules as a Novel Bone Substitute for Orthodontic Tooth Movement: A Report of the First Case.

Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) into severe alveolar bone defects is challenging, and alveolar bone augmentation is often required before OTM. However, few reports have been published regarding the augmentation with bone substitutes for OTM other than autologous bone. This report demonstrates that OTM into the previously augmented bone area with novel carbonate apatite (CO3Ap) granules as a novel bone substitute is possible and safe. Six months after bone augmentation with CO3Ap granules in the area of a severe alveolar bone defect, we confirmed sufficient new bone formation. Then, OTM into t
