Wetlands are one of the ecosystems most easily and severely invaded by alien species. Biological invasions can have significant impacts on local plant communities and ecosystem functioning. While numerous studies have assessed the impacts of biological invasions on wetlands, relatively few have been conducted in protected areas such as national wetland parks. We conducted a field survey to investigate the effects of the invasive herb Alternanthera philoxeroides (alligator weed) on the productivity and structure of plant communities and soil microbial communities in the Lishui Jiulong National

Young edible seedlings of herbs and vegetables, commonly referred to as microgreens, have become nutrient-dense crops, ideally adapted to controlled environment agriculture (CEA). Their short growth cycle, minimal input requirements, and compatibility with both soil and soilless systems make them ideal candidates for weather-resilient and urban crop productions. Unlike previous reviews focusing either on nutrient composition or cultivation practices, the present review uniquely brings together nutritional optimization, agronomical innovations, and postharvest sustainability within CEA framewor

Halimione portulacoides is abundant in salt marshes, accumulates mercury (Hg), and was proposed as useful for phytoremediation and pollution biomonitoring. Endophytic bacteria promote plant growth and provide compounds with industrial applications. Nevertheless, information about endophytic bacteria from H. portulacoides is scarce. Endophytic isolates (n = 665) were obtained from aboveground and belowground plant tissues, from two Hg-contaminated sites (sites E and B) and a noncontaminated site (site C), in the estuary Ria de Aveiro. Representative isolates (n = 467) were identified by 16S rRN

Achyranthes bidentata Blume (Amaranthaceae) is an annual or perennial herb widely used as ethnomedicine in Traditional Chinese Medicine for treating fever, cold, ulcers, mensural pain, dementia, and osteoporosis. In the current study, UPLC-IM-Q-TOF-MS/MS-based chemometric approach was adopted for the tentative identification of fifty-six compounds in the extract and fractions of A.bidentata seeds. Further, the chemometric-guided isolation led to the isolation of two previously undescribed oleanane-type triterpenoid saponins, named achyranosides A-B (27 and 30), along with three known compounds

Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris ssp. vulgaris) is a major global source of sucrose. Domestication and a history of breeding have shaped the distribution of deleterious mutations across the genome. Accurately resolving these variants offers a compelling avenue to accelerate crop improvement through breeding or genetic engineering. We combine three evolutionary methods to identify putatively deleterious derived mutations: angiosperm-wide DNA language deep learning model (PlantCaduceus), fine-scale evolutionary rates from Amaranthaceae plant family sequence alignments using PAML and PhyloP. We defined

Alternanthera philoxeroides (alligator weed) is an invasive weed that can colonize both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Individuals growing in different habitats exhibit extensive phenotypic variation but little genetic differentiation in its introduced range. The mechanisms underpinning the wide range of phenotypic variation and rapid adaptation to novel and changing environments remain uncharacterized. In this study, we examined the epigenetic variation and its correlation with phenotypic variation in plants exposed to natural and manipulated environmental variability. Genome-wide methylat

Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. (common name Johnson grass) is a perennial invasive weed that causes great harm worldwide, and its allelopathy has been demonstrated in a series of experiments. The present study offers new insights into its organ-specific phytochemical profiles using state-of-the-art metabolomic technology and explores the effects of a methanol extract of S. halepense rhizomes (ShER) and its major bioactive compounds (p-hydroxybenzoic acid and chlorogenic acid) on three noxious weed species. The phytotoxic effects of ShER are reflected through the inhibition of seed germination an

Suaeda glauca, a halophyte in the Amaranthaceae family, exhibits remarkable resilience to high salt and alkali stresses despite the absence of salt glands or vesicles in its leaves. While there is growing pharmacological interest in S. glauca, research on its secondary metabolites remains limited. In this study, chemical constituents of the aerial parts of S. glauca were identified using 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments, and its biological activity concerning hair loss was newly reported. Eight compounds, including alkaloids (1~3), flavonoids (4~6), and phenolics (7 and 8), were isolated. The compou

Cystine knot α-amylase inhibitors are cysteine-rich, proline-rich peptides found in the Amaranthaceae and Apocynaceae plant species. They are characterized by a pseudocyclic backbone with two to four prolines and three disulfides arranged in a knotted motif. Similar to other knottins, cystine knot α-amylase inhibitors are highly resistant to degradation by heat and protease treatments. Thus far, only the α-amylase inhibition activity has been described for members of this family. Here, we show that cystine knot α-amylase inhibitors named alstotides discovered from the Alstonia scholaris plant
