Tracheal stenosis in a yellow-crowned parrot (Amazona ochrocephala) due to diffuse ossification and osteopetrosis of tracheal rings.

Tracheal luminal stenosis can cause clinical respiratory distress in wild birds. We describe a case of tracheal stenosis due to diffuse ossification with osteopetrosis of tracheal rings in a yellow-crowned parrot (Amazona ochrocephala) with a history of chronic respiratory distress and death after development of marked dyspnoea. An ante-mortem radiographic examination revealed that the tracheal rings were radiopaque and that there were multiple areas of osteopenic change in long bones. At necropsy, there was stenosis of the tracheal rings characterized by complete replacement of cartilage by t

Determining the Prevalence of Avian Chlamydiosis in Wild Amazona Species From Brazil Using Molecular Testing and Clinical Signs.

Avian chlamydiosis is a disease that occurs in birds, especially parrots, and is caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Chlamydia psittaci. Wild Animal Screening Centers in Brazil receive, maintain, treat, and place (preferably to nature) wild animals recovered from illegal trafficking. We performed molecular testing for avian chlamydiosis in parrots from the genus Amazona that were presented to these centers. Cloacal swab samples were collected from 59 parrots (Amazona species) and transported in aqueous or culture medium. The samples were subsequently submitted for DNA extraction by the boili

EFFECTS OF EXERCISE ON THE PLASMA LIPID PROFILE IN HISPANIOLAN AMAZON PARROTS (AMAZONA VENTRALIS) WITH NATURALLY OCCURRING HYPERCHOLESTEROLEMIA.

Hypercholesterolemia is common in psittacines, and Amazon parrots ( Amazona spp.) are particularly susceptible. Associations have been demonstrated between naturally occurring and experimentally induced hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis in psittacines. Daily exercise improves lipid metabolism in humans and other mammals, as well as pigeons and chickens, under varying experimental conditions. Hispaniolan Amazon parrots ( Amazona ventralis ) with naturally occurring hypercholesterolemia (343-576 mg/dl) were divided into two groups. An exercised group (n = 8) was housed as a flock and exer

Health evaluation of free-ranging and captive blue-fronted Amazon parrots (Amazona aestiva) in the Gran chaco, Bolivia.

Bolivia has a total of 47 species of Psittacidae, seven of which have been identified in our study site, the semiarid Gran Chaco of the Isoso. One species, the blue-fronted parrot (Amazona aestiva), is frequently captured by local Isoseño Guaraní Indians for exploitation on the national and international market. These birds are often temporarily housed in small villages under unhygienic conditions with poultry and other domestic species. On occasion, these parrots escape back to the wild. Additionally, many of these birds are kept as pets or are used to lure wild. parrots within slingshot rang

Critical perspectives in the making: early pregnancy among young people in Nieva, Amazonas.

This study analyses how young people in Nieva, a district in the Peruvian Amazon, understand sexuality and early pregnancy, and how their views are influenced by key adults in their lives in a context of social violence. This qualitative investigation adopted a decolonial feminist approach and involved 30 individual interviews with secondary school young people (aged 14-18 years), their teachers and mothers. Workshops were also held with 140 young people in the same locality. The findings show that young people critique unequal gender relationships inside and outside their school, and they rec

Discrepancy Between Active Trachoma and Tests of Chlamydial Infection in Alto Amazonas, Peru.

BACKGROUND: Trachoma mapping in Latin America is incomplete, especially in indigenous communities of the Amazon thought to be at highest risk. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of clinical, microbiological, and serologic evidence of trachoma in a remote area of the Peruvian Amazon. METHODS: A population-based sample of households from rural communities in Alto Amazonas province was selected using 2-stage cluster sampling. In children aged 1-9 years, conjunctival photographs, conjunctival swabs, and dried blood spots were collected. Photographs were graded for trachomatous

Occurrence of arbovirus infections in two riverine populations in the municipality of Humaitá, Amazonas, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The riverine communities of the Amazon comprise different social groups that inhabit the rural areas on the banks of rivers and lakes. Residents usually travel by river to rural and urban areas and are then exposed to urbanized diseases such as those caused by arbovirus infection. In Brazil, emerging diseases such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and those caused by infection with Oropouche and Mayaro viruses necessitate epidemiological surveillance. This study was aimed at determining the frequency of positivity for immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgM antibodies against Zika, chikungunya, a

Inflammasome genes polymorphisms may influence the development of hepatitis C in the Amazonas, Brazil.

Hepatitis C is considered a major public health problem caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Viral infections are known to induce production of IL1β through the signaling pathway of inflammasomes. Emerging evidences suggest that Inflammasome genes may influence the immune response against HCV as the host genetic background may contribute to the balance between acute and chronic inflammation. We investigated in 151 patients with chronic hepatitis C and 206 healthy blood donors' individuals (HD). Polymorphisms in the IL1B and IL18 genes were genotyped by PCR-RFLP, while NLRP3, CARD8, CTSB and

Fatal stroke after Bothrops snakebite in the Amazonas state, Brazil: A case report.

Bothrops atrox is the snake responsible for the majority of snakebites in the Brazilian Amazon. Patients generally evolve to local manifestations such as edema, pain and ecchymoses. Systemic effects of B. atrox venom are usually restricted to blood incoagulability and spontaneous bleeding. However, in a few cases, bleeding in the central nervous system may occur, which can lead to sequels and deaths. Here, we report a case of a 59 year-old woman who presented edema, pain and ecchymoses on the right foot, headache, nausea, diarrhea, hypertension and blood incoagulability after the bite by Bothr

Functional variations in MBL2 gene are associated with cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Amazonas state of Brazil.

Functional variations in the mannose-binding lectin (MBL2) gene causing low levels of serum MBL are associated with susceptibility to numerous infectious diseases. We investigated whether there is genetic association of MBL2 variant alleles with cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by Leishmania guyanensis. We used PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism to genotype six MBL2 variants, three in the promoter region and three in the exon 1. An association was noted between the single nucleotide polymorphism -221X/Y of the MBL2 gene and CL (P=2.9 × 10(-6); odds ratio (OR)=1.9 (1.4-2.5) consist

Trachoma and ethnic diversity in the Upper Rio Negro Basin of Amazonas State, Brazil.

A trachoma survey was carried out among three culturally different populations of the Upper Rio Negro Basin in the Brazilian rain forest of Amazonas State. The results indicate that trachoma is prevalent in the region, reaching hyperendemic levels (between 50.9% and 56.4%) in all communities studied. However, the severity of the disease appears to be related to the ethnic origin of the tribes, following the rank of social and cultural values that regulate the complex interactions between the Indian groups of the region.
