Do Commercial Insect Repellents Provide Protection against the Tick Amblyomma sculptum (Acari: Ixodidae)?

Amblyomma sculptum is a species of public health interest because it is associated with the transmission of the bacteria that causes Brazilian Spotted Fever (BSF). The use of repellents on humans is a prophylactic measure widely used to provide protection against a series of arthropod vectors, including mosquitoes and ticks. However, in Brazil, the effectiveness of commercial repellents against A. sculptum is little known. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out specific studies to evaluate the repellency of these commercial products, registered for use against mosquitoes, against the star tic

Factors affecting patterns of Amblyomma triste (Acari: Ixodidae) parasitism in a rodent host.

Here we offer a multivariable analysis that explores associations of different factors (i.e., environmental, host parameters, presence of other ectoparasites) with the interaction of Amblyomma triste immature stages and one of its main hosts in Argentina, the rodent Akodon azarae. Monthly and for two years, we captured and sampled rodents at 16 points located at 4 different sites in the Parana River Delta region. The analyses were conducted with Generalized Linear Mixed Models with a negative binomial response (counts of larvae or nymphs). The independent variables assessed were: (a) environme

Seasonal distribution of larvae and nymphs of Amblyomma tigrinum Koch, 1844 (Acari: Ixodidae).

The seasonality of immature stages of Amblyomma tigrinum was studied in an area of the Chaco phytogeographical province in Córdoba, Argentina by monthly collection of larvae from ground feeding birds and Sigmodontinae rodents, and nymphs from Caviidae rodents from May 2005 to April 2007. An apparent peak of abundance was found from December to May but differences with other months of the year were not significant (P>0.05). These and previous results suggest that the parasitic stages of A. trigrinum are active throughout the year and has more than one generation per year at the study site. Its

Life cycle of Amblyomma cooperi (Acari: Ixodidae) using capybaras (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris) as hosts.

The life cycle of Amblyomma cooperi was evaluated under laboratory conditions testing different host species. Larval infestations were performed on chickens (Gallus gallus) and capybaras (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris). Nymphal infestations were performed on G. gallus, H. hydrochaeris, guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) and wild mice (Calomys callosus). Infestations by adult ticks were performed only on capybaras. All free-living stages were observed in darkness at 27 degrees C and RH 85%. Capybaras were significantly (p < 0.05) the most suitable hosts for immature ticks, with the highest larval (63.6%

First detection of Amblyomma variegatum and molecular finding of Rickettsia africae in Sardinia, Italy.

Here we present the first detection of a male Amblyomma variegatum tick infesting a sheep on the island of Sardinia, as well as the detection of a pathogen, Rickettsia africae, in DNA extracted from this tick. The tick, the second individual of this species reported in Italy (the first one was reported in Sicily by Albanese in 1971) was collected in August 2018 from the inguinal region of an adult female sheep in a farm located near Sassari (North-West Sardinia). The tick was identified as an adult A. variegatum male under a stereomicroscope using morphological keys. A phylogenetic analysis sh

Novel record of a tick Amblyomma sculptum with detection of piroplasm Rangelia vitalii DNA.

Rangelia vitalii is the protozoan responsible for a febrile tick-borne disease known as "Nambiuvú" or "bleeding plague." The only competent vector of this protozoan recognized in Brazil is the tick Amblyomma aureolatum. The aim of this study was to identify R. vitalii using molecular biology in ticks parasitizing Cerdocyon thous from Tijuca and Serra dos Órgãos National Parks, which are areas of the Atlantic Rainforest biome in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. After taxonomic identification, ticks were crushed and DNA was extracted and examined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to verify a

Range expansion of the tick Amblyomma triguttatum triguttatum, an australian vector of Q fever.

The tick Amblyomma triguttatum triguttatum has previously been reported from Western Australia, Queensland and New South Wales. A viable population of this species, including all developmental stages, has now been discovered on the southern end of Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. Species determination was carried out morphologically and using 18S and 16S rRNA. The data for 16S rRNA are the first published for this species. Amblyomma t. triguttatum is significant through its involvement in the natural, Australian cycle of Coxiella burnetti, the pathogen causing Q fever. The environment of York

Prevalence of parasitism by Amblyomma americanum on wild turkey poults as influenced by prescribed burning.

Captive-raised eastern wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) poults were allowed to forage on either recently burned plots or on plots that had not been burned during the previous 3 years. Following a two hour exposure on the study plots, external parasites were recovered from all poults. The louse (Menacanthus stramineus) and the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) were the only parasites recovered. Fifty-nine poults exposed to the burned plots had a significantly (P less than 0.001) lower prevalence of A. americanum infestation than did 57 poults exposed to the unbured plots. Thirty

RNA Viruses of Amblyomma variegatum and Rhipicephalus microplus and Cattle Susceptibility in the French Antilles.

Ticks transmit a wide variety of pathogens including bacteria, parasites and viruses. Over the last decade, numerous novel viruses have been described in arthropods, including ticks, and their characterization has provided new insights into RNA virus diversity and evolution. However, little is known about their ability to infect vertebrates. As very few studies have described the diversity of viruses present in ticks from the Caribbean, we implemented an RNA-sequencing approach on Amblyomma variegatum and Rhipicephalus microplus ticks collected from cattle in Guadeloupe and Martinique. Among t

Transmission dynamics and control of Rickettsia rickettsii in populations of Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris and Amblyomma sculptum.

BACKGROUND: Brazilian Spotted Fever (BSF), caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii, is the tick-borne disease that generates the largest number of human deaths in the world. In Brazil, the current increase of BSF human cases has been associated with the presence and expansion of capybaras Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris, which act as primary hosts for the tick Amblyomma sculptum, vector of the R. rickettsii in this area. METHODS: We proposed a semi-discrete-time stochastic model to evaluate the role of capybaras in the transmission dynamics of R. rickettsii. Through a sensitivity analysis, we

Inhibition of the classical pathway of the complement system by saliva of Amblyomma cajennense (Acari: Ixodidae).

Inhibition of the complement system during and after haematophagy is of utmost importance for tick success in feeding and tick development. The role of such inhibition is to minimise damage to the intestinal epithelium as well as avoiding inflammation and opsonisation of salivary molecules at the bite site. Despite its importance, the salivary anti-complement activity has been characterised only in species belonging to the Ixodes ricinus complex which saliva is able to inhibit the alternative and lectin pathways. Little is known about this activity in other species of the Ixodidae family. Thus

Transcriptome analysis of the salivary glands of the female tick Amblyomma americanum (Acari: Ixodidae).

Ticks infest a wide range of hosts while bypassing their immune, inflammatory and haemostatic responses during their extended feeding, which may last for more than two weeks. Here, we present a transcriptome analysis of 3868 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from three cDNA libraries generated from the salivary glands of adult female Ambyomma americanum ticks at different stages of feeding. We applied a normalization step for one library, significantly decreasing the abundance of mitochondrial sequences amongst the 2292 sequences from the normalized library. Our ESTs include homologues that may m

Role of the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum (L.), in human and animal diseases.

We reviewed scientific literature pertaining to known and putative disease agents associated with the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum. Reports in the literature concerning the role of the lone star tick in the transmission of pathogens of human and animal diseases have sometimes been unclear and even contradictory. This overview has indicated that A. americanum is involved in the ecology of several disease agents of humans and other animals, and the role of this tick as a vector of these diseases ranges from incidental to significant. Probably the clearest relationship is that of Ehrlichi

Detection of a typhus group Rickettsia in Amblyomma ticks in the state of Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

The state of Nuevo Leon, Mexico has had outbreaks of typhus group rickettsiosis, most recently recognized in 1997. Evaluation of the sera of 345 patients with a dengue-like illness revealed that 25.5% had antibodies reactive with typhus group rickettsiae and 16% had antibodies to Rickettsia parkeri. Rickettsiae were detected by PCR and shell-vial isolations in the field-collected Amblyomma ticks. Molecular characterization by DNA sequence analysis of the gltA, ompB, and 17-kDa gene identified the organisms to be R. prowazekii.

Transmission of a Theileria species to cattle by the ixodid tick, Amblyomma cohaerens Donitz 1909.

Amblyomma cohaerens nymphs, which had been collected as engorged larvae from African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) in the Mara region of Kenya, transmitted a theilerial parasite to a steer. Macroschizonts were detected in the regional lymph node of this steer 12 days after tick application and were subsequently detected for 3 days at low levels of parasitosis. The macroschizonts were large and had numerous nuclei, being morphologically unlike any other theilerial schizonts described previously from cattle in Eastern and Southern Africa, but they resembled the macroschizont of T. barnetti Brocklesb

Bacterial Communities Harboured by Amblyomma Hebraeum Infesting Small Stock in Mahikeng city, South Africa.

Ticks are important vectors of pathogens affecting livestock productivity and public health, yet their bacterial communities remain poorly characterized in many parts of South Africa. This study investigated the bacterial diversity and potential pathogenic bacterial etiology associated with Amblyomma hebraeum ticks collected from sheep and goats in Mahikeng, North West province. A total of 168 adult ticks were sampled across four villages. Microbiome profiling was performed using high-throughput sequencing of the V3-V4 hypervariable regions of the 16S rRNA gene on the Illumina MiSeq platform.

Interactions between microbiota and immunity shape pathogen acquisition and fitness in Amblyomma spp. ticks.

Besides carrying pathogens, ticks also harbor commensal and mutualistic microorganisms that constitute their microbiota. This microbial community can modulate the tick immune system and influence pathogen acquisition, either facilitating or hindering colonization. Additionally, the microbiota may impact tick fitness. Although the ticks Amblyomma sculptum and Amblyomma aureolatum are important vectors of Rickettsia rickettsii, the causative agent of Brazilian spotted fever, A. sculptum is much less susceptible to infection than A. aureolatum. Intriguingly, while A. aureolatum midgut harbors an

Molecular detection of Toxoplasma gondii in Amblyomma gervaisi ticks infesting monitor lizards (Varanus bengalensis).

Reptiles often inhabit environments that are in close proximity to humans and livestock, creating opportunities for parasite transmission. They are common in areas where they find shelter, food and warmth. The Bengal monitor lizard (Varanus bengalensis), a member of the family Varanidae, represents one of the largest groups of extant poikilothermic predators. Monitor lizards are known to harbor several tick species that serve as vectors for a variety of pathogens. No prior information is available in the literature regarding ticks infesting V. bengalensis in Pakistan as well as regarding the o
