Adie's syndrome as a cause of amblyopia.

Adie's syndrome comprises a tonic pupil, which may be associated with impairment of accommodation, in the presence of diminished or absent deep tendon reflexes. We report a case of a 4-year-old boy with Adie's syndrome in which latent hypermetropia was made manifest by accommodative paresis and resulted in reversible amblyopia.

Diagnosis and management of strabismus and amblyopia.

Strabismus and amblyopia are among the most common eye problems encountered in children. Proper assessment and management require a knowledge of the various types, methods of detection, and principles of treatment. The role of the pediatrician is emphasized because of the importance of early detection.

Evaluation of the Amblyopia tracker app.

PURPOSE: The Amblyopia tracker app has been developed to be a tool for parents to monitor changes in vision at home during amblyopia treatment. The aims of this study were to evaluate the feasibility and repeatability of parents testing their children at home and to compare home test results to an assessment in clinic by an orthoptist. METHODS: Children (age < 18 years) with amblyopia (interocular acuity difference of ≥ 0.2logMAR) were recruited. Parents were asked to test their child with the app three times during a two week period followed by an online questionnaire about the usability. Pa

Global processing in amblyopia: a review.

Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder of the visual system that is associated with disrupted binocular vision during early childhood. There is evidence that the effects of amblyopia extend beyond the primary visual cortex to regions of the dorsal and ventral extra-striate visual cortex involved in visual integration. Here, we review the current literature on global processing deficits in observers with either strabismic, anisometropic, or deprivation amblyopia. A range of global processing tasks have been used to investigate the extent of the cortical deficit in amblyopia including: globa

The relationship between anisometropia and amblyopia.

This review aims to disentangle cause and effect in the relationship between anisometropia and amblyopia. Specifically, we examine the literature for evidence to support different possible developmental sequences that could ultimately lead to the presentation of both conditions. The prevalence of anisometropia is around 20% for an inter-ocular difference of 0.5D or greater in spherical equivalent refraction, falling to 2-3%, for an inter-ocular difference of 3D or above. Anisometropia prevalence is relatively high in the weeks following birth, in the teenage years coinciding with the onset of

The measurement and treatment of suppression in amblyopia.

Amblyopia, a developmental disorder of the visual cortex, is one of the leading causes of visual dysfunction in the working age population. Current estimates put the prevalence of amblyopia at approximately 1-3%(1-3), the majority of cases being monocular(2). Amblyopia is most frequently caused by ocular misalignment (strabismus), blur induced by unequal refractive error (anisometropia), and in some cases by form deprivation. Although amblyopia is initially caused by abnormal visual input in infancy, once established, the visual deficit often remains when normal visual input has been restored

The pattern of visual deficits in amblyopia.

Amblyopia is usually defined as a deficit in optotype (Snellen) acuity with no detectable organic cause. We asked whether this visual abnormality is completely characterized by the deficit in optotype acuity, or whether it has distinct forms that are determined by the conditions associated with the acuity loss, such as strabismus or anisometropia. To decide this issue, we measured optotype acuity, Vernier acuity, grating acuity, contrast sensitivity, and binocular function in 427 adults with amblyopia or with risk factors for amblyopia and in a comparison group of 68 normal observers. Optotype

Outcome of occlusion treatment for amblyopia.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine the level of visual acuity following occlusion treatment for strabismic and anisometropic amblyopia and to analyze the factors that influence the outcome. METHODS: In this observational study, we examined the medical records of 246 patients discharged between April 1991 and March 1996, including those who failed to complete treatment. Two groups were identified: Group 1 esotropia (n = 151); and Group 2 anisometropic amblyopia with or without microtropia (n = 79). Factors influencing outcome of treatment were analyzed, success being define

[Refractive error and amblyopia in children].

The refractive status of 3,099 children was analyzed. The result showed that the incidence and degree of hyperopia decreased gradually and those of myopia increased along with the growing up of children in ametropia. In binocular refractive amblyopia, high and medium hyperopia and myopia in severe and medium amblyopia were significantly more than those in mild amblyopia. In monocular refractive amblyopia, high and medium hyperopia and high myopia in the amblyopic eyes were more than those in the nonamblyopic eyes. The refractive status of binocular esotropic amblyopia had no significant differ

Amblyopia and strabismus in congenital ptosis.

Seventeen per cent of 216 cases of simple congenital ptosis developed amblyopia and 19% had a squint. Of those patients with amblyopia, 14% had amblyopia attributable to stimulus deprivation, 21% had anisometropic amblyopia and 51% had strabismic amblyopia. Early refraction, orthoptic assessment and treatment and, where the pupillary axis is occluded, surgery to prevent stimulus deprivation amblyopia are recommended.

Instrument-Based Screening for the Detection of Amblyopia and Amblyopia Risk Factors: A Report by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

PURPOSE: To review the published literature on the diagnostic accuracy of instrument-based screening devices used to detect amblyopia and amblyopia risk factors (ARFs). METHODS: A literature search of the PubMed database with no date restrictions and limited to articles published in English was last conducted in January 2025. The search yielded 291 articles; 41 were reviewed in full text, and 33 met the criteria for inclusion in this assessment. The panel methodologist assigned a level of evidence rating to each of the included studies. RESULTS: All 33 articles (which reported results from 2

CAN Optical Coherence Tomography redefine amblyopia?

Introduction: For many years, amblyopia was regarded as a disorder of the visual system in which an organic cause could not be identified. Optical Coherence Tomography opens new horizons in understanding the etiopathology of amblyopia and seems to highlight morphologic anomalies in the retina of the amblyopic eye. Purpose: The objective of this paper is to analyze the macular thickness, optic nerve changes, and choroidal thickness found in patients diagnosed with amblyopia based on trials reported in the literature. Material and methods: This study analyzes 30 clinical trials regarding amblyop

Tobacco-alcohol amblyopia: a diagnostic dilemma.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco alcohol amblyopia is an outdated term for a rare condition characterized by visual impairment due to tobacco and alcohol abuse usually associated with nutritional deficiencies. The more accurate term used now is Nutritional Optic Neuropathy. The visual impairment generally presents as a centrocecal scotoma. Its pathophysiology is poorly understood but it is generally attributed to toxic effects of cyanide and B12 deficiency. DESIGN/SUBJECTS: 61 year old male presented with one month history of altered mental status and progressive, painless, bilateral vision loss in the

Deprivation amblyopia and congenital hereditary cataract.

Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder of vision associated with decreased visual acuity, poor or absent stereopsis, and suppression of information from one eye.(1,2) Amblyopia may be caused by strabismus (strabismic amblyopia), refractive error (anisometropic amblyopia), or deprivation from obstructed vision (deprivation amblyopia). 1 In the developed world, amblyopia is the most common cause of childhood visual impairment, 3 which reduces quality of life 4 and also almost doubles the lifetime risk of legal blindness.(5, 6) Successful treatment of amblyopia greatly depends on early detect

Monocular amblyopia and higher order aberrations.

This study compared the corneal and total higher order aberrations between the fellow eyes in monocular amblyopia. Nineteen amblyopic subjects (8 refractive and 11 strabismic) (mean age 30 ± 11 years) were recruited. A range of biometric and optical measurements were collected from the amblyopic and non-amblyopic eye including; axial length, corneal topography and total higher order aberrations. For a sub-group of eleven non-presbyopic subjects (6 refractive and 5 strabismic amblyopes, mean age 29 ± 10 years) total higher order aberrations were also measured during accommodation (2.5D stimuli)

Amblyopia and real-world visuomotor tasks.

A question of increasing interest to the basic science and clinical management communities during the past decade is whether children and adults with amblyopia and associated binocular visual abnormalities experience difficulties in executing real-world actions, to which vision normally makes an important functional contribution. Here we provide objective evidence that they do, by reviewing quantitative data from a number of studies comparing their performance with that of matched normally sighted subjects on a range of everyday visuomotor tasks. Because in real life, these tasks (grasping obj
