Discriminant analysis of cardiovascular and respiratory variables for classification of road cyclists by specialty.

BACKGROUND: Different variables determine the performance of cyclists, which brings up the question how these parameters may help in their classification by specialty. The aim of the study was to determine differences in cardiorespiratory parameters of male cyclists according to their specialty: flat riders (N.=21), hill riders (N.=35), or sprinters (N.=20) and obtain the multivariate model for further cyclists classification by specialties, based on selected variables. METHODS: Seventeen variables were measured at submaximal and maximum load on the cycle ergometer Cosmed E 400HK (Cosmed, Rom

Validity of Lactate Thresholds in Inline Speed Skating.

Lactate thresholds are commonly used as estimates of the highest workload where lactate production and elimination are in equilibrium (maximum lactate steady state [MLSS]). However, because of the high static load on propulsive muscles, lactate kinetics in inline speed skating may differ significantly from other endurance exercise modes. Therefore, the discipline-specific validity of lactate thresholds has to be verified. Sixteen competitive inline-speed skaters (age: 30 ± 10 years; training per week: 10 ± 4 hours) completed an exhaustive stepwise incremental exercise test (start 24 km·h, step

Stability of the blood lactate-heart rate relationship in competitive athletes.

INTRODUCTION: The identification of the HR (or RPE) associated with blood lactate concentrations of 2.5 mmol x L(-1)(aerobic threshold) (AerT) and 4.0 mmol x L(-1)(anaerobic threshold) (AnT) is a common method for defining training intensities. It is often assumed that the HR at AerT and AnT changes with changes in fitness, much as the power output (Watts: W) associated with AerT and AnT is known to change. METHODS: We studied speed skaters (N = 13, 7 male, 6 female) during spring (deconditioned) and fall (conditioned) evaluations, using cycle ergometry (stage duration = 5 min) to determine W

Does an aortopulmonary shunt before repair of tetralogy of Fallot limit exercise tolerance in long-term survivors?

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of an aortopulmonary shunt on exercise capacity in long-term survivors after total repair of tetralogy of Fallot (17.6(2.0) years' follow-up). Submaximal exercise tests, pulmonary function tests, lund diffusion tests for carbon monoxide, two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiography were performed in 12 patients with an aortopulmonary shunt (group A) and in 21 patients (group B) without a shunt before repair. There were no significant differences in two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiographic findings nor in pulmonary function. Group A show

Metabolic responses to exercise in patients with heart failure.

Metabolic and hemodynamic responses to exercise were evaluated in 10 patients with chronic congestive heart failure. We utilized an exercise protocol in which the work rate was increased continuously and oxygen uptake (VO2) kinetics were characterized by linear, first-order dynamics. VO2 at peak exercise (VO2max) was depressed at 12.8 +/- 2.3 ml/min/kg and the anaerobic threshold occurred at 63 +/- 10% of the VO2max. A significant correlation was observed between the VO2 at the anaerobic threshold and the resting cardiac index (r = .74, p less than .05). Ventilation-perfusion relationships imp

[Exercise tolerance after correction of tetralogy of Fallot].

Twenty-six postoperative patients with tetralogy of Fallot (TF) were evaluated by exercise stress test with an upright cycle ergometer. Oxygen uptake was assessed at the anaerobic threshold and the peak achieved work load. Oxygen uptake at the anaerobic threshold (VO2AT) was in the normal range regardless of the existence of residual stenosis (PS) or pulmonary regurgitation (PR). However, oxygen uptake at the peak achieved workload (VO2max) was subnormal in patients with PS or PR. Maximal heart rate in TF patients was lower than normal. Patients with PR showed significantly reduced VO2max as c

Advancing Aerobic Exercise Training Intensity Prescription in Health and Disease Beyond Standard Recommendations: A Call to Action.

Guidelines for aerobic exercise training (AET) often recommend training intensities on the basis of a percentage of peak effort (e.g. %peak heart rate [%HRpeak], %peak oxygen uptake [%VO2peak]). However, such an approach could be associated with a higher inter-individual variability in acutely induced physiological responses (e.g. blood lactate, HR, VO2) when compared with threshold-based prescription (i.e. ventilatory threshold [VT] or lactate threshold [LT]). Therefore, we performed a literature review to compare the acute physiological impact of AET prescription based on fraction of the pea

Revisiting cardiac output estimated noninvasively from oxygen uptake during exercise: an exploratory hypothesis-generating replication study.

Stringer et al. [J Appl Physiol (1985) 82: 908-912, 1997] developed a method from invasive data to estimate cardiac output during incremental exercise testing based on Fick's principle. The authors proposed that the arterio-mixed venous oxygen content difference increases linearly with percentage of maximal O2 consumption. We hypothesized an S-shaped pattern in the published data and calculated the inflection point of this curve and of the standard resting oxygen dissociation curve. Using a partial F test, we compared the linear model with a third-order polynomial model, which showed a better

Performing moderate to severe activity is safe and tolerable for healthy youth while wearing a cloth facemask.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate if a cloth facemask could affect physiological and perceptual responses to exercise at distinct exercise intensities in healthy young individuals. METHODS: Nine participants (sex, female/male: 6/3; age: 13±1 years; VO2peak: 44.5±5.5 mL/kg/min) underwent a progressive square-wave test at four intensities: (1) 80% of ventilatory anaerobic threshold (VAT), (2) VAT, and (3) 40% between VAT and [Formula: see text] wearing a triple-layered cloth facemask or not. Participants then completed a final stage to exhaustion at a running speed equivalent to the maximum achieved du

Changes of magnesium concentrations in endurance athletes.

Erythrocitary and serum magnesium (Mg) were determined in a group of 11 well-trained athletes before and after a 25-km running race, and in a group of 30 sedentary controls. The significant increase of mean erythrocitary Mg (EMg) concentration observed in the athletes after physical strain (2.58 +/- 0.34 mEq/l before, 3.10 +/- 0.45 mEq/l after the race: significance level = 5%) leads to the assumption that the possible Mg uptake is effected by the red blood cell to enhance some enzymatic reactions. The decrease of mean serum Mg concentration observed in the same subjects after the effort (1.70

Venous blood lactate increase after vertical jumping in volleyball athletes.

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that venous blood lactate concentrations ([La-]) would vary from the beginning of brief exercise. Maximal vertical jumping was used as a model of brief intense exercise. Eleven healthy male volleyball players, aged [mean (SE)] 18.5 (0.7) years, performed three exercise tests with different protocols, each separated by quiet seated recovery periods of 45 min. After the first test, consisting of a single maximal jump [lasting approximately equals 0.6 s for the pushing phase, and in which the subjects jumped 64 (2.2) cm], forearm venous [La-] incre

Physiological sensitivity of respiratory-dependent cardiac pacing: four-year follow-up.

Clinical and physiological data on long-term follow-up of 143 patients with respiratory-dependent pacemakers (RDP3) are reported; 121 patients received ventricular (VVI-RD) and 22 patients atrial (AAI-RD) respiratory-dependent stimulation. Functional evaluation was based on the exercise testing (130 pts) with oxygen uptake VO2, ventilation, ECG and arterial pressure monitoring and the dynamic Holter electrocardiogram (95 pts). In each patient, the stimulation rate curve selected was that which produced the best work tolerance and moved the anaerobic threshold to the right. Respiratory levels w

Anaerobic radiometric detection of facultative Gram-positive cocci in blood.

Radiometric detection of facultative gram-positive cocci, particularly streptococci, has been reported to be suboptimal. A recently marketed anaerobic Bactec bottle (7C) with purportedly improved capability to detect facultative gram-positive cocci in blood was compared with the previously available bottle in a study of simulated bacteremia. The Bactec system detected all beta-hemolytic streptococci and enterococci tested. Detection of alpha-hemolytic streptococci was improved in general. However, detection of Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus bovis and Streptococcus pneumoniae remained subo

Evaluation by cardiopulmonary exercise test of DDDR versus DDD pacing.

UNLABELLED: In eight patients (age 62 +/- 6 years) a DDDR pacemaker was implanted for sick sinus syndrome (three cases) or second- and third-degree AV block (five cases). In five subjects chronotropic incompetence (maximal heart rate on effort < 110 beats/min) was present before implantation. One month after implantation the patients were randomized to DDDR or DDD pacing for 3 weeks each, with subsequent crossover, and at the end of each period a symptom limited cardiopulmonary exercise test (25 watts/2 min) was performed and the patients were requested to fill a symptoms questionnaire.
