Duplication cyst of the ileum presenting with severe anemia detected by double-balloon endoscopy.

Background and study aims  Duplication cysts of the ileum are rare and present with non-specific clinical manifestations such as abdominal pain, vomiting, melena, and intussusception. Therefore, preoperative diagnosis is difficult. Here, we report a case of duplication cyst of the small intestine that was diagnosed preoperatively using double-balloon enteroscopy. A 19-year-old man presented with severe iron deficiency anemia, abdominal pain, and exertional dyspnea. Gastroscopy and colonoscopy revealed no remarkable findings. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a cystic structure in the ileu

Cervical myelomeningocele.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical myelomeningocele (cMMC) is a rare disease. Only a few series have been published regarding cMMC. Different issues regarding the etiology, classification, clinical, surgical, and pathological aspects of cMMC are still a matter of conflict. METHODS: Sixteen children operated on for cMMC between July 2000 and 2003 were followed by the neurosurgical service at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Tehran. The patients were followed up for 2 to 5 years (median, 3 yr). RESULTS: The studied patients were nine boys and seven girls, ages 1 day to 4 months. Neurological examination

Septic Peritonitis Secondary to Neoplasia in Two Canine Cancer-Bearing Patients Lacking Gastrointestinal and Hepatic Organ Rupture.

In this case report, we describe the presentation, diagnosis, and outcome of septic peritonitis secondary to neoplasia in patients lacking evidence of gastrointestinal content leakage, liver abscessation, or other treatment-associated risk factors. Two dogs presented with a diagnosis of neoplasia and nonspecific clinical signs such as lethargy, hyporexia, vomiting, and discomfort that was localized to the abdomen. The diagnoses at presentation consisted of a perianal tumor consistent with apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma and systemic mastocytosis. Neither of the dogs was considered syste

Coordinate expression of cytokeratins 7 and 14, vimentin, and Bcl-2 in canine cutaneous epithelial tumors and cysts.

Forty-seven canine cutaneous epithelial tumors and cysts were examined to determine coordinate expression of cytokeratins 7 (CK7) and 14 (CK14), vimentin, and Bcl-2 using commercially available antibodies. Within non-affected normal skin adjacent to tumors or cysts, CK7 expression was observed in luminal cells in apocrine glands; CK14 expression was observed in the stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, basal layer of outer root sheath, sebaceous glands, and myoepithelial cells of apocrine glands; vimentin expression was observed in dermal papilla and scattered non-epithelial ce

Hypercalcemia of malignancy in a dog with cutaneous apocrine gland carcinoma and malignant myoepithelioma.

Humoral Hypercalcemia of Malignancy (HHM) is a commonly reported condition in dogs affected by several cancers, mostly T-cell lymphoma and anal sac gland carcinomas, but also other type of tumors. We report the case of a 6-years-old, female neutered Border Collie with an ulcered nodule on the right retromandibular region, that had mild serum total calcium elevation (14,1 mg/dl; reference range (RR): 8,4 to 11 mg/dl) in the absence of clinicopathological abnormalities or imaging finding suggesting any known cause of hypercalcemia. Histologically, the tumor had a tubular epithelial component, ad

Cecal transection with transanal evisceration in a goat.

A 16-mo-old, pregnant, Nigerian Dwarf doe was presented to the veterinary hospital after being struck by a farm truck. A piece of tissue was found on the ground next to the goat after impact. The doe was painful on abdominal and perineal palpation, but abdominal radiographs and ultrasound did not reveal fractures or soft tissue herniations. The accompanying piece of tissue was a blind-ended sac covered with fecal material, most suggestive of the cecal apex. The goat declined to lateral recumbency, and due to the poor prognosis, the owners elected euthanasia. Postmortem examination identified f

Immunohistochemical Expression of CD31 (PECAM-1) in Nonendothelial Tumors of Dogs.

CD31 immunoreactivity has been reported in human nonendothelial tumors of both epithelial and mesenchymal origin. This study examined CD31 immunoreactivity of 347 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded normal, nonneoplastic, and neoplastic canine tissues. CD31 expression was considered positive if at least 10% of the cell population had membranous reactivity. Labeling with the CD31 antibody (clone JC/70A) was observed in 16 samples of normal organs (liver, kidney, lymph node), 6 of 6 specimens of hepatic nodular hyperplasia, 3 of 3 hepatic regenerative nodules, 1 of 4 anal sac carcinomas, 6 of 6 he

Canine cryptorchism and subsequent testicular neoplasia: case-control study with epidemiologic update.

A retrospective study of 2,912 cryptorchid dogs identified 14 breeds with significantly high risk. Among six distinct closely interrelated breed groups (e.g., toy, miniature, and standard poodles), the risk in the smaller breed was always greater than that in the larger relative, suggesting that genetically influenced maldescent could be, in part, related to physical size or the rate of growth of the involved structures. Testicular tumors were diagnosed in 5.7% of the cryptorchid dogs; half had only Sertoli cell tumors, one-third had only seminomas. The relative risk for Sertoli cell tumor or

The prune belly syndrome in a female foetus with urorectal septum malformation sequence: a case report on a rare entity with an unusual association.

The prune belly syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly which is characterized by the triad of an absent or a deficient development of the abdominal muscle, bilateral cryptorchidism and an anomalous urinary tract. In its full form, this condition occurs only in males. However, a similar condition occurs in females in the absence of cryptorchidism. On the other hand, the urorectal septum malformation sequence is a lethal congenital malformation which is characterized by the development of a phallus like structure, a smooth perineum and the absence of urethral, vaginal and anal openings. We are re

The management of rectal injury during radical retropubic prostatectomy.

From May 1982 through March 1991, 10 rectal injuries were identified in 1,000 men who underwent radical retropubic prostatectomy for clinically localized adenocarcinoma. All rectal injuries occurred in nonirradiated patients. Of these patients 9 were identified during surgery and 1 was diagnosed on postoperative day 2. The 9 patients in whom the injury was recognized at operation underwent successful primary closure without a diverting colostomy. The patient who underwent delayed closure was treated with a temporary diverting colostomy. As a preoperative routine, all patients received a Fleet

Description of the Early Development of Hoplias intermedius (Günther, 1864) (Characiformes: Erythrinidae).

In this study, we provide a detailed description of the eggs, larvae, and juveniles of Hoplias intermedius, focusing on their morphological, meristic, and morphometric characteristics. Specimens were obtained through induced spawning using the hypophysation technique. The eggs (n = 82) were large and spherical, with a yellowish yolk, transparent chorion, and a small perivitelline space. During development, 135 larvae and 16 juveniles were examined, with standard lengths ranging from 5.48 to 39.00 mm. Larvae exhibited a terminal mouth, simple nostrils, spherical eyes, a large yolk sac, occupyin

Sudden bilateral foot drop due to dorsally unilateral migration of the herniated lumbar disc: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Due to the anatomical characteristics of the anterior epidural space, dorsal migration of material from herniated lumbar disc is quite rare. Also, bilateral foot drop due to unilateral dorsal migration of disc herniation is extremely rare. This report presents a case of sudden bilateral foot drop caused by the unilateral dorsal migration of material from a herniated lumbar disc. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 51-year-old male presented with sudden onset severe leg pain with bilateral foot drop. The patient was referred to our emergency department by a local clinic. Neurological examination s

Continuous Inking Affects the Biological and Biochemical Responses of Cuttlefish Sepia pharaonis.

Several marine mollusks, including cephalopods (cuttlefish, squid, and octopus) and gastropods (e.g., sea hares), can release a colored ink secretion when chased by predators or stimulated. Ink release is part of a defensive response, but the threshold for the biochemical responses caused by stimulation is unknown. The present study aimed to reveal antipredator responses of cuttlefish, such as escaping via inking and/or jetting, and to investigate its biological and biochemical responses to continuous ink release. Results showed that the behavioral responses to continuous ink release mainly ma

Paraneoplastic hypercalcemia.

Paraneoplastic syndromes (PNSs) are neoplasm-associated alterations in bodily structure or function or both that occur distant to the tumor. They are an extremely diverse group of clinical aberrations that are associated with the noninvasive actions of the tumor. In many situations, the PNS parallels the underlying malignancy, and therefore, successful treatment of the tumor leads to disappearance of the PNS. Alternatively, recurrence of the PNS after successful treatment signals recurrence of the tumor, and the return of the PNS often significantly precedes the detectable recurrence of the tu

Immunological demonstration of intestinal absorption and digestion of protein macromolecules in the trout (Salmo gairdneri).

An immunofluorescence technique using antibodies against the Fc and Fab fragments of human IgG (IgGH) was used to study the absorption of proteins by the intestinal epithelial cells of rainbow trout after oral or anal administration. Cellular absorption of a high molecular weight protein, hepatitis-B surface antigen (HBsAg), was also studied by using two monoclonal antibodies, one specific for the confirmation of the antigen (implying disulfide bridges), and the other that reacts with the constituent polypeptides. Both absorbed IgGH and HBsAg were seen to be segregated in the apical vacuolar s

Intradural lumbar disc herniation associated with degenerative spine disease and rheumatoid arthritis.

STUDY DESIGN: A case report. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate a case of intradural lumbar disc herniation including imaging studies, intraoperative imaging, and an intraoperative video. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The first case of lumbar intradural disc herniation was reported as early as 1942; since then more than 150 cases have been reported, mostly in the lumbar spine. Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance image (MRI) is considered the "gold standard" for diagnosing this entity, although it is rarely performed routinely in lumbar disc disease and diagnosis is often made intraoperatively. Survey of the prevalence, diagnosis and treatment of dermatological conditions in small animals in general practice.

A survey was made of the prevalence, diagnosis and treatment of dermatological conditions in small animals in general practice in the UK. Out of 3707 small animal consultations in general practice that were observed and recorded, 795 (21.4 per cent) involved animals that had a dermatological problem. In dogs and exotic species, pruritus was the most common presenting sign, accounting for 30 to 40 per cent of the dermatological consultations. In cats, cutaneous swellings were the most common presentation (36 per cent). A diagnosis or recommendation for treatment was made on the basis of the pre

Scalloping Sacral Arachnoid Cyst as a Cause of Perianal Pain- A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Scalloping sacral arachnoid cyst though a rare condition, should be suspected in cases of persistent perianal pain without any obvious urological or anorectal pathology. Such difficult cases justify ordering an M.R.I of spine as plain X-Rays and clinical examination may come out to be inconclusive. X-ray in later stages may show changes corresponding to scalloping of bone due pressure effect of cyst on surrounding tissue. Diagnosis may further be confirmed by doing contrast MRI which differentiates arachnoid cyst from other intradural and extradural pathologies. Though anatomical
