Between June and September 2002, a preliminary study was conducted to assess the prevalence of blood parasites of cattle in eastern Algeria. Fifty-four bovines of different genotypes were submitted to clinical examination. From each animal, blood smears were made and stained by Giemsa. Four species of parasites, namely Theileria annulata, T. orientalis, Babesia bovis and Anaplasma marginale were encountered. Fifty animals carried single or multiple infections with blood parasites and four were found negative. The rate of single infections (72.3%, n = 39) was almost three times higher than mult

Bovine theileriosis and anaplasmosis are major tick-borne diseases affecting cattle health and productivity worldwide. Although cattle farming significantly contributes to Paraguay's economy, limited epidemiological data on the causative agents hinder the formulation of disease control measures. To address this challenge, the present study investigated the prevalence, risk factors, and genetic diversity of Theileria annulata, Theileria orientalis, and Anaplasma marginale among cattle populations in Paraguay. Blood DNA samples from 326 cattle in nine departments of Paraguay were screened with t

The incidence of blood parasites in trade cattle was surveyed with emphasis on tick-borne parasites, using blood smears and immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) techniques. With the blood smear method, about 9 and 8.9% of cattle examined were found positive for Babesia bigemina and Anaplasma marginale, respectively. Percentage infections with other parasites were 3.33, 1.92, 0.75, 0.75 and 0.58, respectively, for Babesia bovis, Trypanosoma brucei, Anaplasma centrale, Eperythrozoon and Theileria species as well as Trypanosoma congolense. The incidence of A. marginale infection was at its peak durin

Anaplasma is an obligate intracellular gram-negative bacterium belonging to the family Anaplasmataceae and the order Rickettsiales, which is primarily transmitted by the bite of ixodid ticks. To investigate the prevalence risk and genetic diversity of Anaplasma in southeastern and central Shanxi, China, Ixodid ticks were sampled from sheep and cattle host animals in 11 different geographic regions during 2022-2024. These tick samples were then subjected to Anaplasma detection via nested PCR combined with partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The analysis revealed that 246 of 350 ticks were positiv

Fleas (Insecta: Siphonaptera) are obligate bloodsucking insects, which parasitize birds and mammals, and are distributed throughout the world. Several species have been implicated in pathogen transmission. This study aimed to monitor red foxes and the fleas isolated from them in the Palermo and Ragusa provinces of Sicily, Italy, as these organisms are potential reservoirs and vectors of pathogens. Thirteen foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and 110 fleas were analysed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect DNA of the pathogens Ehrlichia canis, Babesia microti, Rickettsia spp., Anaplasma phagocytophil

The transplacental transmission of parasites and hemoparasites is crucial for understanding the epidemiology of diseases. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of hemopathogens in bovine fetuses at various gestational periods. Samples were obtained from a slaughterhouse in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and a total of 236 fetuses were collected. DNA extracted from blood samples (145) and organ samples (a pool of brain and spleen) (236) underwent a nested PCR (nPCR) assay to detect Babesia spp., Theileria spp., Trypanosoma vivax, Anaplasma marginale, Anaplasma bovis, Anaplasma phagocyto

The serological prevalence of bovine anaplasmosis and babesiosis in the Centro-Occidental region of Venezuela was determined using the indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) and latex agglutination (LAT) tests. Anaplasma marginale IFA and LAT prevalence rates were 57.7 and 48.6% respectively for cattle of all ages and breeds. The respective prevalence of IFA activity to B. bigemina and B. bovis was 78.2 and 38.8%. The LAT test specific only for Babesia spp. revealed that 61.4% of the animals tested were serologically positive for Babesia parasites. Anaplasma marginale and B. bigemina organisms we

Disease prevalence studies are one of the most valuable tools to demonstrate the risk or impact of certain infections in local and global economies. The data obtained in these studies contribute to develop strategies for disease control. The present study aims to provide information about the prevalence of babesiosis and anaplasmosis in the northern regions of Sudan. Blood samples from four different states of Sudan were collected from apparently healthy cattle (n=692), DNA was extracted and the prevalence of Babesia and Anaplasma species was analyzed by PCR. The results confirmed the presence

Cross-bred Bos taurus calves, aged between 6 and 8 months, were inoculated with the Onderstepoort Anaplasma centrale live blood vaccine. One group of 15 calves were inoculated once only, while a 2nd group of 15 were revaccinated 6 months later. All the animals were challenged with approximately 1 X 10(10) Anaplasma marginale parasites of a known virulent strain 8 months after the first vaccination. The results of blood smear examination and the card agglutination test indicated that only 20 out of 30 animals vaccinated contracted A. centrale infections after the first attempt, and 3 out of 5 a

Despite a goat population of approximately 80 million in Pakistan during 2020-2021, the prevalence of vector-borne pathogens in goats remains largely underexplored. This study aimed to assess the molecular prevalence and phylogenetic characteristics of Anaplasma ovis, Anaplasma marginale and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in goat blood samples (N = 239) collected from three districts (Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, and Dera Ghazi Khan) in Punjab between September 2023 and October 2024. Blood samples were first screened with generic and then with species specific primers. Molecular analyses revealed a prev

The efficacy of three immunization methods for bovine anaplasmosis was tested on 88 yearling Normandy cattle which were challenge-exposed under field conditions in an enzootic zone in Colombia, South American. A total of 30 cattle were immunized (premunized) with a presumed mild Colombian isolate of Anaplasma marginale; 29 calves were vaccinated with an attenuated A marginale of ovine origin; and 29 were exposed to a virulent A marginale stabilate of Colombian origin. Twenty-nine nonvaccinated cattle served as controls. Parasitemia, packed cell volume, body weight, and complement-fixation anti

Bovine tick fever is endemic in Brazil and responsible for significant economic losses and reduced animal welfare in beef cattle. Understanding disease dynamics, particularly the role of vertical transmission, is crucial for advancing epidemiological knowledge, especially for a disease for which few studies have been conducted in beef cattle. This study evaluated the frequency of tick fever agents across different categories of beef cattle in a feedlot system in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and investigated the occurrence of vertical transmission in newborn calves. A total of 597 animals were assesse

OBJECTIVE: To review the evidence available on the degree and duration of immunity provided by Australian tick fever vaccines against Babesia bovis, B. bigemina and Anaplasma marginale infections in Australia and overseas.
BACKGROUND: Vaccines containing attenuated strains of B bovis and B bigemina as well as A. centrale grown in splenectomised calves have been used in Australia since 1964 to immunise cattle against tick fever. About 800,000 doses of vaccine are supplied annually and much of the evidence for protection is field evidence rather than conventional immunological measures or pen t

BACKGROUND: The majority of the African population lives in rural areas where they heavily depend on crop and livestock production for their livelihoods. Given their socio-economic importance, we initiated a standardized multi-country (Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia Tanzania and Uganda) surveillance study to assess the current status of important tick-borne haemoparasites (TBHPs) of cattle.
METHODS: We assessed pathogen prevalences (Anaplasma marginale, Anaplasma centrale, Babesia bigemina, Babesia bovis, Ehrlichia ruminantium, and Theileria parva) in the blood of 6447 animals

Tick-borne diseases constitute a problem for livestock and public health. Given the socio-economic and environmental conditions of the Colombian Caribbean, ticks are particularly abundant, in turn exposing domestic animals and people in contact with them to such diseases. This study evaluates the presence of Babesia spp., Anaplasma spp., Coxiella spp. and Borrelia spp. in domestic animal ticks (Amblyomma mixtum, A. dissimile, Dermacentor nitens, Rhipicephalus sanguineus and R. microplus) by conventional PCR. Findings show a prevalence of 12.5% of Babesia, 0% of Borrelia, 39.4% of Anaplasma and

A serological survey was carried out in Paraguay to determine the prevalence of antibodies to Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis. The results suggest that the parasites are widely distributed throughout the country with prevalence rates of 92% for A. marginale, 79% for B. bigemina and 71% for B. bovis. Epidemiological studies on calves demonstrated that initial infection with the three blood parasites occurs in most animals within the first nine months of life. It is likely therefore that most of the country can be considered as being enzootically stable with respect to an
