The posteromedial neurovascular bundle of the ankle: an anatomic study using plastinated cross sections.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the topography of the posteromedial neurovascular bundle of the ankle. The anatomic relation of the posteromedial neurovascular bundle at different levels of the ankle was studied as an aid in planning minimally invasive surgery. A thorough knowledge of the local anatomy is a prerequisite before attempting release of the tibial nerve or when using the posteromedial portal for ankle arthroscopy. METHODS: A slice anatomy study was performed on 12 intact right male cadaveric lower limbs. The distal third of each limb was cut and the foot positioned

Bilateral asymmetry in the limb bones of the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes).

There is much debate in behavioral primatology on the existence of population-level handedness in chimpanzees. The presence or absence of functional laterality in great apes may shed light on the origins of human handedness and on the evolution of cerebral asymmetry. The plasticity of long bone diaphyses in response to mechanical loading allows the functional interpretation of differences in cross-sectional geometric. While left-right asymmetry in upper limb diaphyseal morphology is a known property in human populations, it remains relatively unexplored in apes. We studied bilateral asymmetry

Extensor mechanism of the fingers: MR imaging-anatomic correlation.

Extension of the fingers is a complex function carried out by simultaneous action of extrinsic and intrinsic muscles, as well as retinacular structures in the dorsum of the wrist, hand, and fingers that support and coordinate the action of the muscles. The extensor mechanism of the fingers is divided into topographic zones, which extend from the forearm to the distal phalanx. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging shows in detail the musculotendinous and retinacular structures of the extensor apparatus. In the different extensor zones, MR imaging findings are similar to those seen macroscopically in

Topographic pattern of the brachial plexus at the axillary fossa through real-time ultrasonography in Koreans.

BACKGROUND: The ability to explore the anatomy has improved our appreciation of the brachial anatomy and the quality of regional anesthesia. Using real-time ultrasonography, we investigated the cross-sectional anatomy of the brachial plexus and of vessels at the axillary fossa in Koreans. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-one patients scheduled to undergo surgery in the region below the elbow were enrolled after giving their informed written consent. Using the 5-12 MHz linear probe of an ultrasound system, we examined cross-sectional images of the brachial plexus in the supine position with the

Imaging of the hypopharynx and cervical esophagus.

Cross-sectional imaging with CT and MR imaging plays a crucial role in the evaluation of cancers of the hypopharynx and cervical esophagus. Clinical examination, including endoscopy, often fails to detect the full extent of this tumor as it has high propensity to grow in submucosal fashion. Detailed description of the cross-sectional anatomy and of the tumor growth pattern will aid in the detection and evaluation of the full extent of the lesion. Post-treatment imaging findings are addressed.

Anatomy and Imaging of the Nasopharynx, Oropharynx, and Oral Cavity.

Owing to the complex anatomy, the appropriate selection of imaging modalities and interpretation of the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and oral cavity demand a comprehensive knowledge of the anatomic relationships within and among these regions, common pathologies, and interpretative nuances critical for treatment planning. This article outlines the crucial anatomy on multimodality cross-sectional imaging, anatomic relationships that frame various pathologies of the region, and the associated anatomically grounded considerations essential for treatment planning.

Usefulness of X-ray dark-field imaging in the evaluation of local recurrence after nipple-sparing mastectomy.

PURPOSE: Our previous study suggests that the cross-sectional morphology of ducts and branching of ducts in the nipple are associated with the presence of breast cancer. In this study, we evaluated whether cross-sectional morphology and duct branching of human nipple obtained by X-ray dark-field imaging tomographic technique (XDFI-CT) could predict the likelihood of the presence of intraductal cancer into the nipple. METHODS: A total of 51 nipple specimens were obtained from consecutive total mastectomies performed for breast cancer in Nagoya Medical Center. After reconstructing 3D images of

Microanatomical and immunohistochemical study of the human lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve of forearm at the antecubital fossa and its clinical implications.

Changes in the intraneural anatomy with age can cause poor prognosis of nerve repair in patients after nerve injury. The occurrence of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome-Type II, secondary to peripheral nerve injury, is common. The purpose of this study is to asses changes in cross-sectional anatomy of the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve of forearm (LCNF) at the antecubital fossa in the fascicular, nonfascicular components (adipose and nonadipose tissue), and sympathetic fibers area with respect to age. For the purpose of the study, 32 human (37-88 years) fresh cadaveric LCNF were collected f

Laparoscopic surgery for right colon cancer with intestinal malrotation: A case report and review of the literature.

Intestinal malrotation (IM) results from abnormal midgut rotation during embryogenesis and usually presents in early infancy. IM in adults is often an incidental radiological diagnosis. Right colon cancer with IM has been sparingly reported in the world literature. Only 44.7% of these documented cases underwent successful laparoscopic resection, all of which were reported from Japan. The presence of aberrant anatomy and altered vascular orientation in IM presents challenges for laparoscopic resection with adequate nodal clearance. We present the case of a 72-year-old female diagnosed with carc

Normal magnetic resonance anatomy of the hind foot of Egyptian buffalo (Bubalus bubalis): A correlative low-field T1- and T2-weighted MRI and sectional anatomy atlas.

Buffaloes represent a major source of milk production, especially in developing countries including Egypt. The buffalo foot is frequently involved in a large proportion of lameness cases. The relatively small size and complexity of its structures often render the radiographic evaluation of the foot challenging. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive imaging technique that is regarded as both safe and accurate for assessment of the foot disorders in both man and animals. The purpose of the current investigation was to describe the MRI anatomy of buffalo foot using cadaveric hind feet

Cauda equina anatomy. I: Intrathecal nerve root organization.

The three-dimensional organization of the human cauda equina has not been described previously. This is partly due to the difficulties of dissecting individual, unfixed nerve roots. By the use of a newly developed in situ fixation and embedding technique on 15 fresh human cadavers, the cross-sectional anatomy of the cauda equina was defined from L2-L3 to L5-S1. A highly consistent cross-sectional pattern was observed in all specimens. The lower sacral (S2-S5) and coccygeal roots were located in the dorsal aspect of the thecal sac, whereas the lumbar and first sacral roots exhibited an oblique,

Redefining all check ligaments of extraocular muscles using true color sectioned images.

PURPOSE: Visualizing the check ligaments of extraocular muscles is essential to understand their role as stabilizers of the extra-ocular muscles, acting as their antagonists. Although all extraocular muscles are expected to have corresponding check ligaments, this is not consistently documented in anatomical literature. This study aims to clarify the check ligaments using acquired high-resolution true color sectioned images and surface modeling. METHODS: From the sectioned images of one male cadaver, the check ligaments and related structures were outlined and surfaces models were reconstructe

Phenotypic plasticity and constraint along the upper and lower limb diaphyses of Homo sapiens.

OBJECTIVES: Morphological variation along the human limb reflects complex structural trade-offs between bone strength and mass. Here we assess how varying levels of plasticity and constraint affect this structure and influence the response to habitual loading along the diaphysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional geometric properties including total area, cortical area, and rigidity were compared from the upper (humerus: 50% of length, radius: 66%, 50%, 4%) and lower (tibia: 50%, 38%, 4%) limbs of male varsity-level athletes and matched controls with distinct habitual loading histories.
