Comparative anatomy of cranial nerve motor nuclei: with a comment on evolution of the craniofacial region.

Changes of cranial nerve nuclei are investigated at three crucial points of phylogenesis in frogs, lizards and rats. Profound changes can be observed in the trigeminal and facial motor nuclei parallel to transformation of the primary mandibular joint into the secondary mandibular joint. New muscles appear for mastication and facial expression and they are innervated by new types of neurons. The muscular tongue appears first in tetrapods coinciding with terrestrial life. It can be shown that an entirely new type of neuron develops at the medullospinal junction for the innervation of the intrins

Functional outcomes and anatomy-based surgical strategy in 57 pineal region tumors.

BACKGROUND: Pineal region tumors are uncommon lesions that present significant surgical challenges due to their deep location, proximity to critical neurovascular structures, and frequent association with obstructive hydrocephalus. Although several operative corridors are available, factors influencing postoperative functional recovery remain poorly defined. This study evaluated clinical, radiological, and surgical determinants of functional outcomes following surgery for pineal region tumors. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 57 consecutive patients who underwent surgical treatment for pi

Microsurgical anatomy of the cerebral aqueduct and periaqueductal region: implications for microscopic and neuroendoscopic approaches.

PURPOSE: The cerebral aqueduct (CA) is the narrowest part of the ventricular system, connecting the third and fourth ventricles. This structure is encircled by important neuroanatomical features, and with the increasing application of neuroendoscopic techniques, a comprehensive understanding of the anatomy of the CA is essential. This study aims to provide a comprehensive, multi-perspective anatomical analysis of the cerebral aqueduct and its surrounding structures, integrating microsurgical dissections with endoscopic anatomical correlations to support safer surgical planning. METHODS: Three

Peripheral nerve blocks in the cervical region: from anatomy to ultrasound-guided techniques.

Cervical plexus nerve blocks have been employed in various head and neck operations. Both adequate anaesthesia and analgesia are attained in clinical practice. Nowadays, ultrasound imaging in regional anaesthesia is driven towards a certain objective that dictates high accuracy and safety during the implementation of peripheral nerve blocks. In the cervical region, ultrasound-guided nerve blocks have routinely been conducted only for the past few years and thus only a small number of publications pervade the current literature. Moreover, the sonoanatomy of the neck, the foundation stone of int

The surgical anatomy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve in the inguinal region: a meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Several variations in the anatomy and injury of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) have been studied since 1885. The aim of our study was to analyze the available data on the LFCN and find a true prevalence to help in the planning and execution of surgical procedures in the area of the pelvis, namely inguinal hernia repair. METHODS: A search of the major medical databases was performed for LFCN anatomy. The anatomical data were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: Twenty-four studies (n = 1,720) were included. The most common pattern of the LFCN exiting the pelvis was medial to

Variations of the sciatic nerve anatomy and blood supply in the gluteal region: a review of the literature.

Variations of the sciatic nerve anatomy and blood supply are complex and largely not dealt with in common anatomy texts. Variations of the sciatic nerve anatomy can be divided into the height of division of its branches, relation of the branches to the piriformis muscle, and its blood supply. These variations should be well known to any surgeon operating in this anatomical region. It is unknown whether these variations increase the risk of surgical injury and consequent morbidity. This paper will review the current knowledge regarding anatomical variations of the sciatic nerve and its blood su

Lymphatic anatomy of the inguinal region in aid of vascularized lymph node flap harvesting.

BACKGROUND: Vascularized lymph node transfer (VLNT) has shown promise as a treatment for breast cancer-related lymphedema, a common and debilitating condition among breast cancer survivors. In VLNT, the most popular lymph node flap donor site is the inguinal region; however, concerns about the possibility of iatrogenic lymphedema hamper the widespread adoption of VLNT. A better understanding of the anatomy of the lymphatic system in the inguinal region is essential to preserving lymph drainage in the leg and avoiding iatrogenic lymphedema. METHODS: Five human cadaver hind-quarter specimens we

The anatomy of fetal peripheral lymphatic vessels in the head-and-neck region: an immunohistochemical study.

Using D2-40 immunohistochemistry, we assessed the distribution of peripheral lymphatic vessels (LVs) in the head-and-neck region of four midterm fetuses without nuchal edema, two of 10 weeks and two of 15 weeks' gestation. We observed abundant LVs in the subcutaneous layer, especially in and along the facial muscles. In the occipital region, only a few LVs were identified perforating the back muscles. The parotid and thyroid glands were surrounded by LVs, but the sublingual and submandibular glands were not. The numbers of submucosal LVs increased from 10 to 15 weeks' gestation in all of the n

Fetal intrahepatic gallbladder and topographical anatomy of the liver hilar region and hepatocystic triangle.

The fetal gallbladder (GB) is embedded in a deep fossa surrounded by the liver parenchyma. Using 15 specimens with intrahepatic GB (crown-rump length 45-92 mm; approximately 9-13 weeks of gestation), we assessed the fetal topographical anatomy of the hepatocystic triangle and the porta hepatis. The cystic duct displayed a long upward course (0.9-4.5 mm along the supero-inferior axis) from the GB, along the duodenum, to the common bile duct in the hepatoduodenal ligament, via an independent mesentery separated from liver parenchyma by a recess of the peritoneal cavity. Notably, the course varie

Posterior dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint: a case report and review of the clinical anatomy of the region.

Posterior dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint is an uncommon injury. Since 1824, when Sir Astley Cooper described the injury, little more than 100 cases have been described, and the majority of these have been in the last decade, identified by computed tomography. The significant morbidity and mortality associated with this injury is based upon serious damage to important anatomical structures found in the vicinity of the joint. We present a case report, describe the relevant clinical anatomy of this region, and review associated complications.

Surface anatomy of the face in Down's syndrome: linear and angular measurements in the craniofacial regions.

Measurements (23 projective linear, 2 angular) taken in the 6 craniofacial regions of 127 patients with Down's syndrome showed that 63.1% (1,836 of 2,908) were within normal limits and 36.9% (1,072) were outside them. Abnormal measurements were subnormal in 90.8% (973) and supernormal in 9.2% (99). All statistical summaries were based on z scores (adjusting for age and sex differences) classified into a small number of ranges to yield a simplified frequency distribution for each measurement. The purpose of the study was to identify the measurements closest to normal and those indicating the mo

Microsurgical anatomy of the transcallosal approach to the ventricular system, pineal region and basal ganglia.

Vascular and neoplastic lesions of the lateral and III ventricles, the pineal region, or the basal ganglia affect highly critical areas. For surgical treatment of these lesions, the interhemispheric, transcallosal approach was studied in our laboratory in an attempt to evaluate the surgical procedure. The advantages and disadvantages are described in comparison with those for other approaches in the same regions. To this end, we dissected 20 anatomical specimens interhemispherically using the surgical microscope (with a magnification of 6 x to 25 x); the specimens were fixed for 6-8 weeks in f

Regional functional anatomy of the anterior sacroiliac ligament: Segmental resection reveals differential restraint of sacroiliac joint motion.

BACKGROUND: The anterior sacroiliac ligament (ASL) is often described as a thin ventral capsular reinforcement, potentially obscuring regional functional specialisation. We tested whether its superior and inferior regions provide distinct three-dimensional restraint during unilateral and bilateral anterior pelvic loading. METHODS: Twenty-seven fresh-frozen pelves (19 male and 8 female; mean age, 57.1 ± 15.5 years) were tested under anteriorly directed loading applied at the anterior superior iliac spines from 10 to 100 N in intact, superior-resected, inferior-resected, and complete-resection

The influence of systemic and regional anatomy on medical students' body donation willingness and the underlying factors.

Cadaveric anatomy remains indispensable in medical education. However, the development of body donation in China faces challenges due to various socio-cultural constraints. Although medical students constitute only a minor proportion of body and organ donors, their attitudes toward donation may reflect their perceptions of silent mentors and cognition of organ donation to some extent. The findings may help clarify the effects of anatomical education and even the humanistic spirit conveyed by instructors, while also providing guidance for optimizing anatomy curricula to cultivate compassion and

A comparison of 1- versus 3-month regional anatomy exposure on learning outcomes of undergraduate medical students.

Regional anatomy teaching forms a cornerstone of undergraduate medical education. Owing to an increase in teaching and learning content throughout the medical curriculum in recent years, contact hours and overall course durations in anatomy are under review worldwide. This study aimed to assess whether shortening the course content duration impacts learning gain and the ability to identify anatomical structures correctly. Undergraduate medical students of the Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU; n = 310) and at the Medical University of Graz (MUG; n = 156) participating in regional anatomy co

Surgical Anatomy of the Subcallosal Artery: Implications for Transcranial and Endoscopic Endonasal Surgery in the Suprachiasmatic Region.

BACKGROUND: Suprachiasmatic subcallosal lesions may have an intimate relationship with the anterior communicating artery (AcomA); injury to AcomA branches can result in basal forebrain infarction and cognitive dysfunction. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate anatomic variations of the AcomA basal perforating branches, especially the subcallosal artery (ScA), for clinical implications when approaching the suprachiasmatic subcallosal region from endonasal and transcranial routes. METHODS: The origin, course, diameter, and branching pattern of the AcomA's perforating branches were studied in 33 specimens fr

Neurosurgical Anatomy of the Internal Carotid Artery: Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study of the Sellar Region.

BACKGROUND: Transsphenoidal surgical approaches involve dissection of the posterior wall of the sphenoid sinus in close proximity to the internal carotid arteries. To reduce the risk of vascular injury, a detailed study of embalmed cadavers' sellae was conducted and found the internal carotid artery approached within 4 mm of the midline in 10% of cases, and the closest intercarotid distance (ICD) occurred in the cavernous sinus, sphenoid sinus, and supraclinoid segments in 82%, 14%, and 4% of cases, respectively. These measurements have not previously been compared with living patients with mo
