How can a standard software package for data management in anesthesia be achieved?

Collecting data for administrative, statistical, medical, and organizational purposes is becoming increasingly important in anesthesia. In 1986 the Swiss Society for Anesthesiology decided to create a program that would be compatible for different computers and would expedite data collection. The system developed was called Information System for Operations (ISOP), which was written in the database and programming system Massachusetts General Hospital Utility Multi Programming System (MUMPS). It was installed in eight hospitals and met the initial requirements, but the individual requirements

Comparison of Postoperative Results after Hemorrhoidectomy Using Local and Spinal Anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Hemorrhoidectomy is a common procedure in clinical practice. Most operations are performed on an inpatient basis using general or regional anesthesia, and the use of local anesthesia is still limited due to concerns about postoperative care. OBJECTIVE: To compare perioperative results including pain, urinary retention, bleeding and other complications after hemorrhoidectomy performed using local anesthesia (LA) on an out-patient basis with those achieved after spinal anesthesia (SA) on in-patient cases. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This was a retrospective study of closed hemorrhoidectom

An Assessment of Anesthesia Capacity in Liberia: Opportunities for Rebuilding Post-Ebola.

BACKGROUND: The health system of Liberia, a low-income country in West Africa, was devastated by a civil war lasting from 1989 to 2003. Gains made in the post-war period were compromised by the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic. The already fragile health system experienced worsening of health indicators, including an estimated 111% increase in the country's maternal mortality rate post-Ebola. Access to safe surgery is necessary for improvement of these metrics, yet data on surgical and anesthesia capacity in Liberia post-Ebola are sparse. The aim of this study was to describe anesthesia capacity in Li

[The concept of an emergency admission unit in a major community hospital].

The main task of a central interdisciplinary emergency admission unit (EAU) staffed and administered by the anesthesia department is to provide primary hospital treatment for emergency patients. The EAU serves also as a base for the emergency ambulance and functions as a 24-hour resuscitation unit for the whole hospital. The placement of the unit in the underground floor of the hospital makes it easy accessible for ambulances but excludes walk-in patients. The shock room has a floor area of 152 m2 and is optimally equipped, while two smaller emergency rooms provide reserve accommodation. On th

[A case of urachal abscess accompanied by a stone].

A 64-year-old woman presented to our hospital with the chief complaints of abdominal pain and appetite loss, and she was admitted to the internal medicine department. Kidney, ureter and bladder X-ray revealed intrapelvic calcification near the bladder, and so, the patient consulted our department. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an urachal abscess accompanied by a stone. Open surgery was performed under general anesthesia. The mass adhered tightly to the intestine and bladder. The urachal abscess ruptured during the operation, and pus leaked into the intraabdominal

Most hospital patients at risk for bacterial infection undergo an anesthetic: implications for infection control practices related to the anesthesia workspace.

PURPOSE: Even with nearly 100% compliance with prophylactic antibiotic protocols, many surgical patients (> 5%) develop surgical site infections, some caused by pathogens transmitted from the anesthesia workspace (e.g., anesthesia machine), including multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Reducing contamination of the anesthesia workspace substantively reduces the risk of surgical site infections. We estimated the percentage of hospital patients at risk for health care-associated infections who may benefit from the application of basic preventive measures under the control of anesthesia pr

Scrotal injuries during neonatal circumcision.

OBJECTIVE: To report very rarely encountered scrotal injuries during neonatal circumcision. Hospitals and physicians in the authors' country are mandated to report circumcision complications to the Ministry of Health. Those reports include the discharge summary from the emergency room or the admitting department. This is believed to be the first case series describing scrotal injuries during ritual circumcision. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Reports of all circumcision complications between 2007 and 2014 were evaluated. Retrieved data on cases of scrotal injuries included patient's age, time between

A survey of obstetric anesthesia practices in Flanders - 10 year update.

We assessed the practice of obstetric anesthesia in Flanders through an on-line enquiry form and investigated the advancements by comparing the results with those of the 2004 survey. 54 (86%) structured forms were completed, representative for 94% of the accredited maternity beds in Flanders. Obstetric anesthesia is provided in all Flemish acute hospitals and 7/10 deliveries are performed nowadays with neuraxial analgesia. For labor analgesia, classical epidural remains the main neuraxial technique (62%) whereas CSE is used as default technique in 17% of the hospitals and upon indication in 21

[Role of General Anesthesia and Rapid On-site Evaluation
in the Diagnosis of Lung Cancer with EBUS-TBNA].

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer is a common malignant tumor of respiratory system. Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is a valuable tool for the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer. EBUS-TBNA is predominantly performed under local anesthesia or conscious sedation. However, the diagnostic performance of EBUS-TBNA under general anesthesia and in conjunction with rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) remains uncertain. This study aims to investigate the value of general anesthesia and ROSE in the diagnosis of lung cancer with EBUS-TBNA. METHODS: A retrospective analy

Characteristics and Outcomes Associated With Emergent Rectal Foreign Body Management: A Retrospective Cohort Analysis.

Background Bedside management and outcomes of rectal foreign bodies remain challenging due to the presentation and complexity of the inserted objects. Injuries, such as perforation of the colon and rectum, are among the most commonly reported complications. However, prior studies are unclear regarding the setting in which the complication rates may be minimized. This study aimed to assess whether there was a statistically significant difference among the various extraction methods with regard to complications in the emergency department and operating room. Day clinic diagnostic hysteroscopy in a state hospital.

Within 6 years (1991-97), a total of 680 diagnostic hysteroscopies were performed at the Day Clinic of the 1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University of Athens ("Alexandra" Hospital). The procedure was done without general or other forms of anesthesia, using the Siegler method of approach. However in 12 cases with cervical stenosis (1.7%) and 21 patients with marked nervousness (3.1%) general anesthesia proved inevitable. The leading indication was repeated failure of IVF (54.7%), while other indications included abnormal bleeding, amenorrhea and oligomenorrhea, a history of
